Oh my goodness Sugar Pies! I got a wonderful phone call a few days ago…..with news that I’ve waited a lifetime to hear….my daughter Ashley and her hubby Glen are expecting a baby!!! Woo Hoo!! A luscious dreamy-creamy baby sent from Heaven to our family! Hooray! I am going to be a Grand-mama for the first time!
Here’s my little cuppy-cake grand-baby!!
It’s an amazing feeling that my baby is going to have a baby! Oh my goodness! I am in Dreamland!
Will it be a sugar and spice baby girl?
Or will it be a rough ‘n’ tumble little baby boy? Time will tell, either way I am ecstatic!
It seems like yesterday that our little “punkin” Ashley was just a baby herself….my oh my how time flies…..
When I reflect on her growing up years it reminds me of this old song by Harry Belafonte….
Where are you going
My little one, little one
Where are you going
My baby, my own…..
Turn around and you’re two
Turn around and you’re four
Turn around and you’re a young girl
Going out of the door
Turn around, turn around
Turn around and you’re a young girl
Going out of the door
Where are you going
My little one, little one
Little pigtails and petticoats
Where have you gone
Turn around and you’re tiny
Turn around and you’re grown
Turn around and you’re a young wife
With babes of your own ~Harry Belafonte
Okay, I just remembered I never liked that song! It makes me cry every time!! And furthermore I don’t remember giving my kids permission to grow up and “go out the door”! LOL! (As my nest gets emptier I have to keep telling myself that this needs to happen if I am going to have grand-kids….and now it is a dream come true!)
Seriously it has been a privilege and an honor to be Ashley’s mama and have the blessing of watching her grow up to be such a beautiful, talented, amazing young woman inside and out, and now to pass on the flame from my torch of motherhood to hers…. well, I’m in awe and so thankful to the Lord for such a gift.
Ashley and Glen are going to be wonderful parents….they are so full of of love and joy, and they are dedicated to raise their little ones in the ways of the Lord….what more could a mother ask for?
So I say let’s celebrate with a yummy, sweet-as-a-baby GIVE-AWAY!! ~~~~CONGRATULATIONS~~~~
Ruthie, being a grandmother, for me I am a Nana, because my special grandmother was a Nana and it makes me feel love and joy to be called that. The first grandchild is so special, you turn to mush…and the love is so over the top! I thought I could never be any happier when I had my own chlidren, but Grandchildren are really Gods rewards. Oh Ruthie, I am so happy for you all, a baby brings such JOY!
Hugs,
Donna
ruthie, just happened upon your blog the other day. i love it and so happy to be following everyday.
congrats on the grandbaby news! i know you will be blessed ten times over. my grandma was nana and my mom became nanie. when i am so blessed, i would like to be called bubbie.
sending joy your way!
karen
CONGRATS!!
My mom just became a grandma for the first time when my son was born seven weeks ago, so I know what your excitement is all about! :)
Here’s my nickname choice for you: Mas. It is what we call my grandmother, a very sweet Southern woman who Paula Deen reminds me of. We’ve always called her that and when I looked up what it meant, I found out it is French for “farmhouse”. How fitting, right??
CONGRATS AGAIN!
(And FYI, the captcha at the bottom at the moment has the word “ecstatic”. How fitting!
What a wonderful blessing! I will definitely add your daughter and coming grandbaby to my prayers. Can’t wait to read more about the joyous event in the months to come. You must certainly have raised an awesome daughter who will be a wonderful mom and you will in turn, be a wonderful grandmother.
To weigh in on the name issue…whatever you choose, let it be something that your grandchild (and future grandchildren, hopefully) will find easy to ‘use’. In my husbands family, his grandma was Nana so that name was already ‘taken. My MIL chose Gammy since she’d read that was the name used by Barbara Bush’s grandchildren and it sounds sweet. My kids love their Gammy tremendously and have been frustrated over the years that they can never select a card to purchase for her. Seems like a silly thing, but that joyous feeling of expressing their love by selecting a card to go along with a gift (and yes, we made cards too) isn’t possible with an unusual grandma name.
Looking forward to seeing what you decide to choose!
Molly
Congratulations! I became a Grandma 4 years ago when my step-daughter and her husband had a daughter (they now have two daughters!) It’s such a joy. I decided to be called Nana for two reasons (1) due to divorce, these children have multiple grandparents so I thought it would be less confusing if we all had different names and (2) I always loved the Nana character in Peter Pan. So Nana I am! Nothing more sweet than having the two girls run up to me, with their arms wide open for a hug, and yelling out Nana!
Enjoy…the pregnancy and afterwards!
I’m so happy for you. What a lucky baby this will be! I’m sure you won’t spoil him/her toooooo much!
I like “Glamma” for you because you are so Glam and fabulous all at the same time. However, I can see you being a Nana too or even a Gammy but not a Grandma.
I used to like ‘Grandma-ma’ from Bewitched years ago. Always thought that was funny.
Keep us posted! When is the due date?
I am Nana to five, so I might be a little biased. but that is my favorite.
It blesses my heart to hear them say, Nana’s on the phone.
Have fun planning and be aware they will steal your heart.
Blessings….
Dayle
Oh Ruthie, I am so happy for you and your family. My prayers are definitely going out to Ashley for a wonderful pregnancy and healthy happy baby. There is absolutley nothing better than being a Grandparent. They are so special. If you can imagine how you felt when your babies were born, it’s even grander when those grandbabies are born. What a lucky baby this is going to be with such a loving Christian family to grow up with. My Grandbabies call me Grammy. Sometimes they can’t pronounce what they are told to call you and that turns out cuter than what you could decide on.
What a wonderful early birthday present for you. Congratulations Sweet Ruthie!
Hi Aunt Ruthie,
I am so happy for you and right in the middle of me leaving you this comment, my little bundles of joy were knocking on my door, how timely is that??? My beautiful redhead daughter Christie and her two beautiful brunette dreamy baby girls Georgia 2 and Naomi 4 mo.
love you Ruthie
Cheryl
Hi Aunt Ruthie, the neat thing about being a grandmother is that the first grandchild will name you!!!!! It is so precious how that happens. I am Grammie to all 9 of my grandchildren. The two oldest are 11 and they named me that. The little 2 year old calls me Gwama. I think that Grammie will be the one that sticks though. They could call me anything and I would think it is wonderful.
This weekend we are having one of our Grammie and Poppa Camps. Alllllllllll 9 of them come, two 11 (2 days apart), one 10, one 9, three 8’s, one 6 and one 2. We will be sleeping outside and have a “scavenger hunt theme”. They will come Sat. night, go to church in the morning and then we are alllllll cooking fried chicken dinner for their parent in the evening, out in our decorated “Potters Shed. We can’t wait. They learn so much by serving their parents. Children will be coming out of the woodworks!!!!
Blessings to you and your precious family. Is that baby the most precious grandbaby or what? Just think you are a “Grandma” right now!!!!! He or she is so reallllllllllll!
Hugs, Linda
I have been reading your blog for awhile – just enjoying it so much, but never commenting. I lived for a short time in your “neck of the woods” and miss it so much in the fall. There is nothing more beautiful than the Ozarks in the fall. Thank you for bringing some of the beauty of the area to all of us.
Now – for the really important stuff – Congratulations on your new baby. I am Grandma to 4, my newest is 6 weeks old today. There was never any doubt on the name – my grandmas were just grandma and the name brings back wonderful memories to me. My grandchildren have called me a few pretty cute names in trying to pronounce grandma, but now at 4 and 2 and 2 the 3 oldest are doing fine. And they love their grandma – but not possibly as much as I love them! They are the light of my life, and a great deal of time and energy goes into thinking of fun memories to make. My granddaughter and I love tea parties, reading books and playing with our dolls and we are planning to introduce the 3 little boys to our fun. I have now branched out into trucks and trains and we are all loving it. My house is planned with them in mind, I want them to remember Grandma and Grandpa with smiles:-)
I look forward to reading your blog and watching the fun things you come up with. You will be a great grandma!!
Dear Aunt Ruthie,
How exciting! You are going to be such a wonderful grandmom. That little one is already blessed to have you. I recently heard of a grandmother going by the name “Honey”. How cute is that! What ever name you decide on it will be so special just like you are. Happy early birthday too sweet friend.
Lots of love,
Donna
Congratulations to the entire family. Such a wonderful blessing.
I like the name Nana.
I remember staying the night at my grandma & pappy’s house, many, many times. OH how I looked so forward to helping in the garden, painting her fingernails (she always let me do this), eating cornbread and milk, “breaking” beans for canning. Walking to the store with my pappy, and he would watch to be sure I got back home, before he would finish his walk. Those were the days. OH how I’d love to have just one more moment with the two of them. Someday I hope to paint her fingernails again.. in Heaven!
Lots of prayers and wishes for a bouncing baby boy OR girl!
Amy
you definitely look like a mimi to me! that’s what my boys call my mom and she loves it! she looks way to young to be a granny! and so do you! lol, congratulations!
Aunt Ruthie,
We were an infertile couple for 11 1/2 years, and God blessed us with a wonderful baby girl. Then, 11 1/2 months later, we delivered another beautiful girl! Everything happens in God’s time, and according to His will. The name that your new grandchild calls you will come automatically, as you hold your precious one for the first time. Enjoy, and let things happen on their own.
Oh congratulations Aunt Ruthie! I was just thinking about your daughter the other day. I can’t imagine how excited you are. All my grandmothers in my family were Grandma — first name or last name. But when my twin boys were old enough to write to my mom, it was just shortened to “Gramma”. Gramma Ruthie would be cute, but it will be cute whatever you pick!! .
Congratulations!! It is the BEST, let me assure you of that. Our own little grandgirl is almost turning 1, and we are all flying to Michigan from California to celebrate with her. Grandbabies are amongst God’s most wonderful blessings. So excited for you.:)
xoxo Lidy
{ps. that song…always always makes me cry!}
What wonderful news! I just posted a couple of days ago about the fact that both of my boys will be gone from home in the next year. Several people responded telling me the being a grandma is something to really look forward to. It’s funny how we feel like new moms ourselves for so long…then one day the thought of having grandbabies tries to just take over.
I’ve always thought that being called Mimi would be fun and not so old sounding. However, my mom says that the baby is often the one who decides. We’ll see. :) Congratulations!
Oh, that is so wonderful. Prayers for you all. The most adorable little boy at my church calls his grandmother, gamaw, supposed to sound like grandma. Of course it sounds much cuter when he says it.
What a blessing! I am so happy for you and your family. I know that will be one blessed child/granchild. Love your blog. Lori
Congrats Ruthie, I’m sure you will make a wonderful grandma! I’m more traditional here but I like just plain Grandma, another idea is Nonny! I think that is Italian but I’m not sure. Good luck! Thanks for doing the give away.
Carey
Congratulations! I just love your posts.
Congratulations Aunt Ruthie! What a wonderful blessing for all you. I’ve always loved the name ‘Nana’ for Grandmas. You’ll be such a wonderful Nana and also a wonderful mentor for Ashley as she begins her journey into motherhood.
Oooo Aunt Ruthie how FANTABULOUS for you!! My mother keeps wishin’ and a prayin’ that my husband and I bring her a precious granbaby very soon. I’m sure she’ll be just as excited as you are some day soon ;)
I sure do miss my Grammy!! The relationship between a child and their grandparents is such an amazing blessing from God. My vote is for the name “Grammy” as that is what I called my own grandmother. I think it’s much more personable than “Grandma,” but still on the traditional side :)
Blessings to your daughter and family :)
Oh my goodness! Congrats! I know it will be my time to be a Grandma soon too, as my “Little Girl” is growing up so fast! My Daughter always called my Mom “Nanny” It sounds so sweet! Her name is Sue, so she is Nanny Sue! I love it! Congrats again! I am so happy for you’re family! Ashley is so beautiful too! XOXO Marta
Hmmm… my sister became a Grandma a year ago and he calls her Nana…My kids call my mom grandmommie, meme , I am thinking of the Cosby episode where Claire was going to be a grandmother and was trying out her grandma names: Mom Once removed, Mom, the Sequel, etc….
This is funny because my brother and a friend and myself were having a picnic on this cool , fall day and we were at a park our Nana used to take us. I started sharing a few stories from my Nana, She always had the cool, muscle cars. We called her hotrod Nana…she always played board games with us, cooked good food, she loved to laugh and make us laugh. She loved to travel and I got that from her. She died in 1984 and I was able to sit and care for her until she died. I can’t wait to see her again. She loved Jesus!
Congratulations!!! I am excited for you!!
Blessings,
Patty

I was SO excited when my daughter had her first baby (a girl). Then she went on to have three more children in four years. :)
I let my daughter decide what to call her Dad and me so she decided on Grammie (Emilie Barnes grandchildren called her Grammie). Hubby is called Granddad.
Congratulations! Grandchildren are so amazing. I don’t see mine often but when I do, they are so much fun. We are going to New England in a couple of weeks to spend time with them.
Congratulations…no matter what, there is no feeling on earth like being a grandma! My little one calls me Hamma…she couldn’t pronounce the G when she was first talking and now that she is 4, I’m still her Hamma!
Being a grandma is the reward for not choking our teenagers..lol :-)!!!!
Oh what a joyeous time! You are going to be the very best grand-mama ever! I love my lil chickadee, Lucy Gail, a 8 month old bundle of delight and I am expecting my second grandchild in May of 2010! I wish your daughter all the best of God’s blessings and I can’t imagine you being called anything but ‘grand-mama’! Grandbabies make life so very GRAND!
Oh Aunt Ruthie, I am SO excited for you! You’re going to be the most awesome grandma. I’m not sure I can help with grandma names — we called ours Mimi and Nana, but I think just plain Grandma is pretty sweet, too. As for good grandma memories, I think there’s nothing like baking, both for and with your grandkids. I also remember my grandma, Nana, taking the time to sit with me at dinner when I was super little, and if I was dawdling over my food she’d take the fork and feed me a few bites. As the youngest of four kids, I did not get that kind of attention often, so it made me feel really special to be spoiled like that :)
Also, my big news is that my eldest is getting married this spring!! So I doubly rejoice with you, as we enter these new stages of life. Such excitement at reaping the rewards of being a mama — you get to be a mama-in-law someday, Lord willing, and then, if you’re super dee duper blessed, a grand-mama. Congratulations, again. Let the celebratin’ begin! :)
Congratulations Aunt Ruthie (unless you decide to go by Grandma Ruthie). I called my maternal mother Uma (pronounced um-uh). I think it was because I couldnt say Oma (German for Grandma). I called my paternal grandma Mamman (which means grandmother in Farsi… the language of Iran, where my Dad’s family is from). Thought you may like these…
I love the name “Gammy” for a Grandma! It’s easy to say and it just sounds like lovin’ to me! SO sweet!
One of my very favorite memories of my Grandma Anderson is kind of silly…lol. She had one of those ’30s smock-style aprons that crosses in the back and she would let me wear it when I helped her do the dishes. She didn’t have a dishwasher, so all the dishes were done by hand and she had a window right over the sink that faced the backyard. It was a really special time for me because I was the only one who did the dishes with her. When the dishes were all done and put away, she would drain the sink and then fill it back up again, FULL of soap bubbles! She had an old hand mixer (the kind with the crank handle) and she would let me stand at the sink and crank away, making the most amazing, frothy bubbles!!! I just LOVED it! It was so fun and a really special memory for me. She also had one of those chirping bird whistles…I loved that. She kept it over the sink and I was allowed to use it whenever I wanted to.
I adore your blog. Sometimes your joy in homemaking brings me to tears. Oct. 7 is a big day for us this year as well, because we will be closing on our first house!!!… thank you for always inspiring me.
I call my grandma “grams” and my little girl calls my mom “grammie”.. so I am partial to those!
Congradulations!!!!!
Congratulations! I’m so happy for you and your family!
You’re Italian! It’s gotta be Nonna!!!
I look forward to the day that I hear a little one calling out Nonna to me. :)
congratulations again.. what a special time.
((Hugs))
Laura
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! I know you are so happy! I will certainly be praying for your daughter and the baby. My mom says now she knows why they are called “grand” kids.
I remember the first time I told my mom I was expecting. I thought she was REALLY going to pass out. I was told that I could never have children, but little did we know that the Good Lord had other plans for a miracle. I now have 2 children & there is not a day that does not go by that I do not thank my Precious Lord and Savior for my two wonderful blessings.
Grandma Names: One of the cutest names I have ever heard a child call her grandma is “Gooey”. My brother’s little girl (Emmie Kate) could not get her other grandma’s name to come out right. So, “Gooey” got it! I just thought that was such a wonderful grandma name! It just sounds so sweet. The biggest thing to remember is, I believe children know what their grandparents need to be called. My mom wanted my daughter (the 1st of her grandchildren) to call her Nana, but no matter how hard my mom tried to get her to call her Nana, my daughter called her MeMaw. And it has been MeMaw now for 12 years!
One of the fondest memories of my grandmother is of my dad’s mom, who we called “Granny Tea”. Yes, her name was Granny Tea (not just Granny, we always said, “Granny Tea” when we spoke to her). We are from the south, and in the south sweet tea is a big deal. You either can make it or you can’t, and buddy this woman could make some sweet tea. She had 14 grandchildren and she loved us all the same. When we would visit, she made us all feel special in our own way. Personally, I love for my ear lobes to be tickled (sounds silly, doesn’t it). And when I would visit her, she would tickle my ears with a cotton swab until I fell asleep. And on Sundays after church, the smell of fried chicken and her wonderful red velvet cake (YUM!) She was the kind of grandma that believed in “a little dirt never hurt.” She would let us get dirty, climb trees, make mud pies, have water balloon fights, play hide-and-go-seek in the dark and so much more! She was truly a FUN grandmother. I miss here SO much!
Thank you for such a wonderful blog. It provides wonderful words of inspiration for me and certainly a new way of looking at things. I am so glad I found it.
Oh how wonderful!!! Congratulations!!! I think a super sweet “Grandma” name is Grammy but my boys call my mom “Grandma” so whatever feels good to you go with that!! Some of my fondest memories of my Grandma are when she taught me to sew and that she was never too busy to listen or teach me something or give me something fabulous to eat!! I know you will be a wonderful Grandma and I can’t wait to hear whether Ashley’s having a sweet little girl or boy!! Congratulations again!!!!
Congratulations! You’ll love being a grandmother, regardless of what they decide to call you. Yes, sometimes the first grandchild names the grandparents!! I am called Granna. When my son and his wife were expecting the first grandchild, they started calling me Grandma before the baby was born. One day my son started to say Grandma, and sort of stuttered and said Momma at the same time and it came out Granna. I immediately said, “that’s it!!” I love it because it is unique. I know a lot of Mimi’s and Nana’s, but not a single other Granna!
Hi Aunt Ruthie,
CONGRATULATIONS! My daughter was the first grandchild on my side of the family. She calls my mom “Grammykins”, but when she says it, it sounds more like “Ammykins”. A childhood memory for me is that my Grandma always made us Campbells Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches when we were at her house for lunch.
Enjoy your new grandbaby!
Denise
Aunt Ruthie,
Congratulations! And congratulations to Ashley and Glen! How exciting. I was just reading back through your posts when you went on the trail ride and were asking if you could have some grandbabies yet!
I call my grandmother DeeDee. This is because she loves Chickadees, and at her house she has birdfeeders outside her kitchen. We used to sit in front of the windows and she would tell me that chickadees said “chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee”. So I started calling her DeeDee (that’s what I’ve been told).
I was also told that my other grandmother was there at the time and asked me what I was going to call her. To which I replied, “MeeMee.” So I called my grandmothers DeeDee and MeeMee. That’s what they tell me, anyway.
Congratulations again!
Oh how exciting!!!!! I am a mother of 6 and I can’t wait for the day that I become a grandma too. I LOVE the name grandma. It’s a title that represents SO much love and so much wisdom.
You have MOUNTAINS of both. I read your blog and I see much love, and wisdom everywhere I look here. I KNOW you will be a GREAT grandma. Your grandchildren will be so blessed to have you in their lives.
I will keep you and your family and your precious grandbaby in my prayers.
I have many memories of both my grandma’s. One taught me all about what it means to be a lady…..just by her example. She passed away while still young. But I remember her like it was yesterday.
My other grandma taught me all about service, charity, never speaking ill of others, and HARD HARD work…….just by example and showing me the way, as I worked along side of her. She is still living and continues to bless our lives with her goodness and service to others.
Congratulations! I have three grandchildren and it is loads of fun:-) Now Ruthie aren’t you an Italiano like me??? Why grandbabes need to call you Nonni! Not grandma–that sounds too old anyway…LOL! And your a young hip Nonni:-)
Oh, Ruthie, you’re going to be the best Grandma! Congratulations! I became a Grandma 7 months ago and let me tell you it is GRAND! I decided to be called Nana. My sister’s grandaughter calls her Mooms. I think that name is so cute, wish I had thought of it before she did! Once again, congrats!
Blessings,
Carol
OH….Ruthie, you aren’t going to believe THIS! I just got the same phone call from my little girl, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOODNESS, I never knew it could be THIS exciting, I have been on cloud NINE! This will be our first grand baby and its our oldest daughter.
Congratulations to you and your family and to your beautiful daughter and her husband. HOW EXCITING! Sorry, I’m overdoing it on the exclamation points and capital letters…improper I know but what FUN! I had just posted mine, popped in here and saw your news! So happy for you *Ü*
XOXO
Joni
I have to admit I lean towards the more traditional Grandma titles. My favorite is Nana because that’s what my nana was, and my mum took it as her title when my daughters were born. Favorite things my nana did for me were hug me everytime I saw her. Big squeeze the air out of you hugs, you felt loved and nana always smelt of Red Door perfume so now when I smell it it sends me straight back to a hug from her. She also used to let us eat as much rew cookie dough as we could without a word, that was a treat lol. Nana’s are special, enjoy being one.
Well my Mom has always been “Grammy” to my children and my Mother in Law who is named Sue has always been “Grandma Susie”. I called mine Gran and Grandma. My Dad has always been Pops to my kids…don’t know exactly where that started.
I think it was Papa and got reduced to Pops. I want to be Grammy when I have grandbabies…I think it sounds cozy and sweet.
Congratulations! I can’t wait to be a Grammy although my kids are still in high school and middle school. I have a Great Niece named Annabelle Grace that is the delight of my life.
One other thing that is kind of funny. My cousin’s daughter always called my Auntie (her Grandma)….Granny Little and her Dad’s Mom was called “Biggie”. What was humorous about that was that “Biggie” was actually EXTREMELY thin and not all that tall. “Granny Little” just happened to be a tad shorter but a lot wider. :)
Congratulations!!
You will be a great Grammy. I have very many happy memories of my Grammy. I will never forgot the many Christmas cookies we baked and the Christmas decorating we did. It was a tradition that I was glad I got to experiance.
God Bless
Oh Congradulations! I am so thrilled for you and the rest of the family!! Babies are wonderful, I am thrilled for you and your daughter! I see a spoiled baby in the future
I just found your website and I think I’ll have to return! Congratulations on your grand news!!! Being a grandma is really truly a gift from God! It is just the best thing ever! I have two grandsons, ages 2 and 1. I am just plain “grandma”. I love reading books to them and “pretending”, getting down on the floor with them, taking them to the playground. It’s just fun being with them and seeing things through a child’s eyes. I LOVE IT and you will too!!!
I am so happy for you and your new grandbaby!
Thank you for doing this drawing!
Congratulations Grandma to be! I have six grand children, and love them dearly. They say the cutest things, and always are thrilled to se me when I walk through their door, even the grandkitty runs to meet me.
You totally made me cry and reminded me of how short my little girls childhood will be…..
My Gma name suggestion is Honey.
Love your blog so cute!-AMie Ladd
What wonderful news! Praise the Lord!
I think Grammy is a wonderful name for a grandmother, but even more … I think the right name will just be there when that sweet baby arrives.
Congratulations !!! Being a grandmother is THE best thing!!! Such amazing fun! My name is Gwyn, my husband calls me Gwynie Pie (as do my friends) and now my Lily Kate calls me Pie. I love being Pie!
I also love the name Gamma. Some Dr. actor on ER called his grandmother that and I thought it was so cute.

i will keep ashley in my prayers…we share the same name!!! i’m so happy for you and for them…she’s beautiful and what a cutie pie she married! as for the name…it has to be southern…we called our grandmother’s “mamaw”…and my children call my mother “mamaw”…they call my mother-in-law “grammie”…i like “mamaw” best…whatever they call you it will be said with love…
I like to walk with Grandma
Her steps are short like mine,
She doesn’t say, Now Hurry Up
She always takes her time.
I like to walk with Grandma,
Her eyes see things like mine do…
Wee pebbles bright, a funny cloud,
Half hidden drops of dew.
Most people have to hurry,
They do not stop and see.
I’m glad that God made Grandma
Unrushed and young like me.
many blessings!!!
~ashley~
Oh Congrats Nana! I am so happy for you and your family. I am very fond of the name Nana…for grandma. though I am not one, I once read a storybook to my boys a very long time ago named “Babushka’s Doll” and loved that name for grandma. It sounds so endearing.
Also a very happy birthday to you! My youngest was born on the same day…so we shall celebrate together!
Oh how fun! Congrats!!! I have 9 and they are such a joy. My daughter just had her 2cd one 4 weeks ago. I am know as grams or just plain grandma to my grandkids.
My Grandma made me feel very special when we came to visit she would set the table so beautiful and cooked us wonderful dinners and a nice breakfast. Always had time for me and showed us love. I love her very much!
Thank you for encluding us in your celebration. What wonderful gifts!!
God bless you and your family. Sharon
Congrats Aunt Ruthie! This is awesome news. I was just thinking the other day that when I become a Grandma what would I want to be called.
I like Gram-grams or ‘G’mama. But I think you should be called Grammy-pie. :) My Grandma used to let me play house in her storage shed. It was a little brown wooden house. I would set up a table and chairs and she would let me use her lil jelly jars, depression glass, tea cups and other treasures out there in that shed. I thought that was so neat.
We would also go out in her garden together with shovels and overturn the earth to expose worms to all her chickens who followed us everywhere.
Such a blessing – my prayers for a happy healthy baby. You can try and decide what you want that little person to call you – but it never fails – they manage to come up with something special on their own.
I had a lovely grandma! So I like the name grandma.
She taught me to bake biscuits & cakes – & always let me make Louise Slice.
Would take me on the train to town & we would go up & down escalator, in & out lifts.
Took me to her baptist church ladies evenings & taught me how to read the ladies tea cups
Let me try to ring the radio stations to win prizes
She was awesome!
And congratulations to you all!!
Love Leanne NZ
Hi Ruthie!
I am a very experienced grandmother of eleven & great-grandmother of one (I am raising this one!) We had five children and they have filled our quiver! All the grandchildren call me MAMO, which I love. It just happened that the first one started calling me that and it stuck!
My sister’s grandkids call her Pretty Mama which I secretly think she taught them! (LOL!) Whatever that precious little bundle calls you, you will love! Enjoy this time. Take tons and tons of pictures. I do a blog on my great-grandchild weekly and put in all her pics and videos because I just don’t have the time lately to scrapbook. I am a blessed woman. God recognized that you are special and he is blessing you by giving you a grandchild. Nothing in the world can compare with it! You just can’t imagine how deeply you’ll fall in love! Praying for Ashley.
So happy for you!
i love the name “Sugamama” That is what i want my grand kids to call me. Sugadaddy and I are waiting ever so patiently for our phone call. I can’t wait to shower my little ones with love and kisses. and of course, suga-cookies.
Oh Aunt Ruthie…. What a blessing you are about to experience. I have five grandchildren and one great-grandson…. all so precious and dear. I feel so blessed that God has entrusted ME to be their “Nana”. I’m Grandma Ketha to the first three and Nana to the fourth… the youngest granddaughter and great-grandson are too young to call me anything yet….but I’d answer to anything. It brings tears to my eyes to look at each and watch them grow, each developing their own personality… Congrats and I will be praying for Ashley, that she has a safe delivery and the baby will be healthy and strong…. Welcome to the elite club of being a “Grandparent”
Congratulations! I’ll keep your daughter and your family in our prayers for a safe pregnancy and delivery. I’m so looking forward to being a grandma at some point and wish you all the joy and blessings that this little one will bring.
Hi!
II favor “just” gramma. I guess the other names seem to silly. Probably because I didn’t grow up with a different name though. Some names do sound funny though I must admit. As long as its a classy name??
What my gramma did for me is love ALL her grandchildren unconditionally. But the funny thing was is somehow she made us feel like her favorite. But talking to my cousins and siblings they said no she made them feel like her favorite. So she had a knack for making us think we were the cats meow despite our imperfections..
I want to carry on that tradition with my grandchildren. Loving them no matter what and making them feel like I have only ONE grandchild.
She also gave us ice cream sandwiches EVERY time we visited. So now I can’t have a icecream sandwich without thinking of her.
I miss her.
Thanks Aunt Ruthie for your blog and your inspiration. We all love you out here in blogland!

I have a few ideas for you regarding your quest for the perfect Grandma name. First is my sweet Grandmama she was perfect to me. I tease my kids and tell them I want to be Nona (grandma in italian) and my kids have a grandma that they call Gigi.
We will be praying for the pregnancy and your wonderful adventure of becoming a grandma!
Blessings to you and your family.
Chella
Let me toss the grandmother name “Nonnie” into the hat. That’s what my kids called MY mother. It didn’t sound so old and it’s cute and different and it was easy for the babies to say. I love it and I may be a Nonnie when I have grandkids – wish I could get one or more of mine married off so I could have some….
Congratulations on becoming a grandmother- Your “kids” look like they’ll make wonderful parents – cute parents, and they’ll make even cuter babies!
Oh, I forgot, my kids called my dad “Pop-Pop”. He just THOUGHT he wanted to be called Paw-Paw. I even found cards with that name Pop-Pop on them. I found some Nonnie cards, too. Now my grown kids call daddy Pop.
You can make up all the cute names you want, but when that first grandchild is born and you try to teach them how to call you ——-, whatever comes out of its mouth is what you’ll be called! And you’ll come a-runnin’!
Congratulations, there are so many special names for a grandmother, we simply have Nana in our families, but each child is different and may come up with something ultra-cute and sweet just for you. My son who is 3 aboslutely adores his Nana, and she him, they walk to the river on their property and throw what we in Australia call “honkey nuts” into the water, and my son just loves doing it, simple things like that are what children cherish. You will be such a blessing to this child, and the child to you.
Sugar hugs for you xxx
Hello and congratulations. It is wonderful being a grandma. I have 4, a 6 year old girl, a 2 year old girl and two, 19 month old boys. My sweet little 6 year old always called me bama, (doesn’t anymore, darn it) and the other three call me mama, although my two year old started calling me grandma tonight which was very sweet. Anything they call you will be wonderful. And I have found that they are the ones that choose the name.
Congratulations on being a grandma! I’m in the thick of the parenting season of my life right now, but I always thought the name Paula Deen has her grandson call her was sweet- Grandlady.
My kids always called my mom “what-no-bosco” (picture silly voice) and somehow it stuck strange as it is. We don’t even know how it originally started, but it endears my mom to them when she hears it in their silly voices because it’s their name for her! So, maybe your new little grandangel will choose your name for you, too ( :
Congratulations!! You will have so much fun! I am teaching my two little grandbabies to call me Grammy, in honor of my wonderful Grammy. When I was born she was the one who named me Kathleen, and since I was born on St. Patrick’s Day, she sewed me a beautiful green dress for each birthday until I was 21 years old!
Enjoy this time of waiting, it’s very exciting!

Oh, SO many comments, at first I think, why bother…but I go forward because…I AM A GRANDMA…and thats what we do!
Mostly, I am called Grandma, but some of my 19 grands call me Grammy…I don’t care WHAT they call me, as long as I am a star in their eyes.
Today I talked to my 2 year old Caleb…for 10 min. I heard : “varoom”…motorcyle!…Sing Grammy….So I sang 4 songs…I could hear him breathing…when I would get done with each song, he would “chatter” and i would say…Yes…OK…ahhuh!
I love it when he takes the cell phone to his mommie and says;”Call Grammy?!’
Nothing in this life prepares us for being a Grammy…it is the highth of JOY and LOVE. I’m so happy for you, your daughter is beautiful and I’m sure the baby to come will be the most beautiful thing you have EVER seen…congratulation! :D
Ruthann,
I was soooo excited to hear the news! Ashley shared it with me last Friday – she is already glowing. You are going to make such a terrific Grammy, or whatever you choose to be. I have already started to pray for this little one, such an addition to the family. I’m excited to hear about Bri, too! Your blog is so wonderful, and such an inspiration to so many. I will call you, but just ran across your post, so wanted to get this to you quickly – it’s very late here now. LOVE YA!
“Grammy Sue” or “Suey” to Ashley
Oh my that grandbaby is going to be so blessed with a grandparent like you! Great news! Babies bring so much fun to a family – congrats!
My friends mom & dad ended up being called Honey & Pa. Because Grandpa always called his wife “honey” their little grandbaby assumed that is what he should be calling her as well. So it stuck & I thought that was the sweetest name ever to call his grandma. I’m partial to Nana because my grandmother was Italian & would go around saying “Nana mia”. She always always told me I was beautiful & make the most delicious biscotti cookies @ Christmas-time. I always loved her home-made chicken noodle soup when we got sick, too. She wasn’t a major cook after she retired but always gave so much love & encouragement. She is very much missed!
Maybe you’ll have to change your blog to be Grandma Ruthie, eh? Or whatever your dear name will be to that precious child God is blessing you all with! You know it’ll end up being what the child says and it’ll be so cute! After all, that’s how we got such cute names such as mamaw, honey, mimi, etc! :)
My daughters called my mother Maw-Maw and my mother-in-love is Yummy! I like Gigi, Glam-ma and G-Mom. Hope you have fun picking a name and blessings to your daughter and son-in-love. I pray that her pregnancy is smooth and uneventful. I found your blog over at DeNeice’s Organized Homemaking for Christ. Glad I found you!
Be Blessed!
~Chondra
Congratulations! Have fun preparing to be Granny, or whatever you choose to be called! The name is only part of the fun! There will be so much more to come!
Congrats on becoming a grandma!! There is nothing like it in this world!! I’m going to be a grandma again for the second time in February. We have a 9 year old granddaughter and we just found out that our new grandbaby is going to be a boy.
My granddaughter calls me “grandma”, but my sister’s grandkids call her “nana”. It will be the best whatever they call you.
The one special thing that I did with my grandmother was making sugar cookies. We made them almost very time I stayed with her. I have continued this tradition with my granddaughter…we make them for every holiday and sometimes just because we want to. A special time that I will never forget is when my granddaughter and I made sugar cookies and took them to my grandmother in the nursing home. These are the times that I will cherish forever.
~Cindy~
I just wanted to say ‘Congratulations’ on the new grandbaby. As a SAH mother of three little ones, I get a great deal of pleasure and advice from your blog and I’m thrilled to hear your family is to be blessed in this way. My children have a Nanna and a Nanny. My grandmother was also a Nanny.
Many congratulations again.
Paula
(I don’t expect to be entered into the giveaway as I’m in England, so I imagine postage would be very high)
Congratulations to your darling daughter and her husband but also to you. I have been reading your blog for a couple of years and I think you are going to one amazing grandmother! Enjoy the grandmother glow that you are exuding through this blog entry.
Hugs ~
Heidi
Congratulations to the parents and the grandparents! It’s such a fun world with a little one for a gramma to squeeze. My suggestion for a name? Just let the little one come up with something. Somehow once they start talking, everything is just darn cute. The parents will suddenly start calling you a special name; and even if it’s ‘granny”, you will love it because you are a gramma. God certainly knew what He was doing when He planned families :D
Dear Aunt Ruthie,
Congratulations on this wonderful news. A baby is such a blessing! You are blessed with kindred spirits in lovers and if you are lucky enough a kindred soul in a friend. Mine, is my Nana, there is something so cozy that that name conjures up for me. My other important grandmother was Mom-Mom, I have never known another Mom-Mom and that makes this woman who I lost this year even more dearer! I made mud-pies and washed my doll’s clothes with my Nana who made me a little clothes line to hang them on, and Mom-Mom and I would make peach pies together and go on drives to the mountains when the weather turned. I know you will find the name that is just right for you! Wishing your daughter and son-in-law the best of luck!
Jennifer xo
Hello Aunt Ruthie, I am so thrilled for you and your family, congratulations that is such wonderful news. I have three little ones, and they all call my mum Nana, that’s quite common over hear in England. My mother in law is known as Grandma. If I am ever lucky enough to be a grandma, I think I would like to be called Mimi, and if they ever called me Glam-ma well I’d be over the moon.
Bertie x
congratulations! you’re gonna be such an awesome grandma! the lil baby is so lucky :)
Oh honey, I can feel your excitement for your new angel! Why you never be anything short of a SUGARPIE! My dear aunt is a SWEETIE to her grands so I see nothing wrong with a SHUGAPIE! I hope to be a NA-NA one day! But relax that sweetness will call you what she wants to-ask my mom…She always wanted to be a granny like her fav grandmother but that GR combo was much too hard for my sweet girl to get out so the GR turned out to be GUY! LOL I’d also tell her to call ‘GRAND-DaDDY OK? So his name became “K” So all the world now knows my parents as GUY and “K”!!!
My kiddos – Jackson & Ellie (4 & 2) call their grandparents, Bamma and Pop Pop. And it always sounds so sweet when they say it. Grandparents are a real blessing as well. My husbands parents live a stone throw from us and my kids love going to their house. Bammas house is always so fun to be at. Congratulations and your family will be in our prayers!
How about Grammy? My daughter is recently engaged (that song you mentioned made me cry!) and I told her that is what I would like to be called when she has children. We called my grandmother Nana, and I wanted to keep that name for her. Nana lived in a small apartment, and wasn’t able to do too much cooking, but she used to keep special snacks in her pantry for when we came. We used to come running in and hug her and then she would send us straight to the pantry – yum!
Congratulations! Ohhh how I loved and still love my grandma’s. They were all grandma to me no matter what they said (my mom had me at a very young age so they too were quiet young and could not get used to “grandma” but they warmed up to it!) Your first grandchild sets the stage of what all the other grand children will call you. My mother-in-law is called mom-mom, of course this was set by her first grand child. I have a friend whose grand kids call her “duppie” strange but it works. I have always liked “Grammie”, to me that is someone who could bake up a storm with her grandchildren. What will your husband be called? “Paps”, “Papap”, “Gramps”, or “Grandpa”? Please enter me in thr delightful Giveaway! Praying for a healthy grandbaby and pregnancy as well!
Tress
Congrats on such wonderful news…prayers for the new parents that
all goes well…this is so exciting for you and the whole family….there is so many names for grandmothers but nothing as special as the ones the little ones come up with themselves….I have always liked Grammy
or Nana…Ours was just Grandma and what I remember most about her
was her teaching me how to sew and knit….
May God shower with all his Blessings….
How utterly wonderful!! My three grandchildren are the joy of my life.
Truly blessings from above. I always called my grandmother Gram and my grnadchildren call me Granny. I am a young grandmother and get such a kick out of peoples expressions when they hear my sweeties yelling granny…
Growing up some dear friends of mine had a grandmother sweet as pie whom they called Me Mother!! What a special name for a special lady. Your blog is filled with Gods love and so was her life so right away the name Me Mother just came to my mind.
God Bless you & your family!!
Granny Trace
Blessed congratulations! My grandma and my mom both chose the name “Marmee” from “Little Women”. I always cry when I read the book “Love you Forever” — my son (when he was little) finally asked me to stop reading it to him because my crying upset him!
Congratulations….what WONDERFUL news!!!
I kind of like just the good old “grandma”…that’s what I called my grandmothers and my children have called theirs. Both of my grandmothers are deceased now, and I miss them so much. I was so blessed to have grandmas that made me feel special all the time. I think that’s one of the reasons God made grandmas :-)
Bless you and your sweet family!!!
How wonderful! It is so neat to see how happy you are. Thanks for sharing with us.
I think a good name is Mommymom. I just love that. But I also love Grandma, it’s just so country. And the little one will make it their very own word, which will make you unique!!
Also there are names like Oma and Opa, which is german, maybe think about where your families came from. Other languages have interesting names for grandparents.
I’m going to marry those cookie cutters:)
I’m a grandma to 4 sweet kiddo’s, keeping it simple- just grandma. Welcome to the club and congrats! You will LOVE this new role! Thanks for a sweet giveaway!
Oh, that’s absolutely wonderful news! My sister just had her first baby on Tuesday. I was able to be there for the delivery and it was just a great reminder of how miraculous life is.
My kids call my mom Nana and they call my husband’s mother Grammy. My sisters and I used to call our grandma, Gammy. My grandma was so special to me. She was like my second mom. My mom traveled a lot for her job when I was growing up so I spent a ton of time with my Gammy. She used to make me cinnamon and sugar toast as a treat. Oh, how I loved that and she knew I did. She also used to spend hours brushing and braiding my hair. She knew I loved that also!
Congratulations!
I am also going to be a Grandma “for the FIRST time
ANYDAY now.
I don’t care what I get called-maybe grammie! LOL!!
They are all such cute names.
I can’t wait!!!! Congratulations to you!!
Congratulations!!! You will make a fantastic Grandma no matter what he/she calls you!
My DS (17) call his Grandma, MAGRAW. It is sort of Grandma backward!
My wonderful paternal grandmother would make mudcakes with me, play dress up, and then peel umpteen apples, carrots, etc for a little granddaughter with a bad snack habit! We just lost her last year at the age of 96. I miss her every. single. day.
Blessings
Linda
Hi Ruthie!
Congratulations on your first grandbaby! I dreamed for 9 nine months, rolled names around and finally settled on one for me. Much to my surprize. My darling grand chose his own! He calls me NayNay. Which I have no idea where that came from. I wanted to be called Gran. Have fun with it!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I vote for good old fashioned Grandma
Congratulations to you and your family! I’ll bet Summer Rose is excited to become and Auntie! Anyway, my son calls one Grandma “Grammy” and he calls my mom Nana…or Nan for short. You are going to be a fabulous grandmother! I will most definitely keep your daughter in my prayers. Keep us posted on what your new blessing will call you!
Cupcakegirl (SugarPie Sister)
Oh What exciting news Aunt Ruthie! I am so happy for you, after seeing what type of mother and “sista” you are I think you will be one of the greatest grandmas! My children call my parents Grammie and my dad Pop-Pop and my inlaws are mom-mom (my newphew couldn’t say grandma, so mom-mom it became!) and grandpa. I myself had a grandma and nannie who I loved dearly! So many fond memories of them and my grandpa! Something my mother does for my children and my neices is Camp Gram each summer. They get together for a certain amount of days and have nothing but fun! Water balloon fights, making blueberry pies, arts and crafts, building sandcastles and it also entails going to get ice cream right before bed in their pj’s! They sure do love it. Something to think about for the future! Congratulations to your daughter and her husband, I am sending prayers for a happy and healthy pregnancy and bouncing baby. You do realize We are going to have to now refer to you as Grandma, Aunt Ruthie!!
Congratulations on the new grandbaby!
Congratulations on your new grandbaby!
Hooray! Congrats to Ashley, Glenn, you, and all your delightful family! What a blessing! And I know you’ll be the sweetest, most loving grandmother in the whole world! I know without a doubt that this little ‘sugar pie’ is going to have a heapin’ helpin’ of lovin’ when he/she gets to visit her grandparents in Missouri!
Somehow you look like a Mimi to me! LOL But then again, I love Marmee too. Or how ’bout RuthiePie? Just kidding! Whatever that sweet little dumpling calls you will be music to your ears!!
Yay for babies and love to you!
Hugs,
Amy O/picketfencemom
I like Nana…Meemaw seems to be a very Southern thing(which is fine-I live in the South)..so if you want to go the Southern grandma route I’d go with that.
Great giveaway from my favorite blog!
CONGRATULATIONS! I am so excited and happy for your family, Aunt Ruthie! I like the name “Grammy”, although “Glam-Ma” is adorable! Both of my sweet grandmothers are gone, but I have fond memories of both. I can remember my Granny playing “store” with me in her cupboards. I was a grocery clerk and she was a customer! My Granny Ruth taught me to cook and when I would visit, we would shop, cook, bake, and watch Lifetime. I lost Granny when I was four and Granny Ruth when I was in college. I still miss them both very much. I just know that your will be the best grandmother ever! I will be praying for Ashley and Glen! Oh, and please enter me in the drawing!
oh how exciting!! Congratulations!!! My mom has my kids call her “grammy” and when I get older for grandkids I want them to call me “grandma Kate” since I will still be young!! ;) I love that necklace, where can I find one to purchase???
My kids call my mother “Meemaw”, which is cute, but I have a friend whose kids call their grandmother “Ninnie”! I love it!
My mom is the best grandmother ever! My boys are so lucky to have her. She’s established little traditions, like she always buys them new bikes (or Big Wheels), and she gets them some new school clothes every year. She has amazing gardens, and she hides bunny statues all throughout them – and the grandkids’ favorite game is to try to find as many as they can! She has all the grandkids over every Easter to decorate eggs – decorate with feathers and googly eyes and paints and glitter and all… the kind of decorating that they might not do at home!
Most of all, she never treats them any less than the treasures that they are. Her home is full of fun and comfort and special treats and always a new little something that caught her eye, that she just HAD to have for them. Meemaw’s house is a wonderland, and they just adore any bit of time that they have with her!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
What lovely news. You are going to make a wonderful Nanna.
That lil’ baby will be the best loved baby in the world!
Love & Hugs
Congratulations!! My mother says that being a grandma is just the best thing in the world. Despite our best efforts at using “Gran” for my mother, my daughter calls her “Gwama Ann”. The first grandchild gets the special gift of designating the names of his/her grandparents! I’m sure your new addition will bless you with a moniker that is perfectly fitting.
Just wanted to say that your blog gives me so much inspiration and joy as a budding homemaker. I have a 2 year old daughter and 3 month old son and I love being able to make a happy home for them :)
Well, my beautiful sweet Granmma went hone to be be with her Savior 3 weeks ago. She fought RA for 20 years and even though it ravaged her body and the pain was so severe she always was smiling. She was the strongest person I’ve ever met. But the most important moment in her life was when she gave her life to Jesus in 1968. Because I’m a hair artist, I’ve had the honor of going to her home every thursday for the past 12 years to style her hair for her. One of my favorite memories of my Gramma was when each of my sister’s and I turned 8 she took us to the store so that we could pick out a purse. Then she let us fill up the purse with anything we wanted! There were 4 of us in my family so alone time was rare. My sister’s and I are all very girly so this was SO much fun. Both of my sister’s have the same memory. I love her and miss her so much. Ladies, my girls are 4 and 8, there is nothing more important than telling our babies and our Grandbabies about Jesus. That’s what my beautiful Gramma did for me. And I thank the LORD for every moment and every laugh and every tear I had with her. I’m so blessed to have known her. Thank you Jesus.
Aunt Ruthie,
I am so happy for you. I am sending out prayers for the health of your daughter and her precious little one.
The tribute to Ashley is beautiful. How blessed your family is to have a wonderful Mother like you. (soone to be Grandmother!)
Congratulations!
CONGRATULATIONS!! That is awesome news. Will keep your family in my prayers each time I visit your lovely site!
Oh one more comment. My daughter calls my mum Bee. My mom’s real name is Debbie so I think maybe that’s where she got it. The funny thing is that the biblical name of Deborah means “busy bee.” So my mum took that as a little blessing from the LORD and I know she treasures it in her heart. My mum is always busy helping everybody she can and is always doing her best to glorify God’s name with her life. Her plan is when she is old and it’s time for the LORD to take her home, she wants to be completely used up. She wants to have lived her life for the LORD in every way. Nothing left. Even when her mom died 3 wks ago, there was a miracle involved. My mom is always teaching my babies about the LORD. What a blessing! But anyway, it’s made it so much fun because we always like to add a little bee to the gifts we get her. I always have my eye out for a cute lil bumble bee things. Especially for Grandparents Day. My mom is a lot like you, she is beautiful, and she has been blessed with an incredible home, (designed by my grandpa and built by my dad’s company) which she uses for the LORD. But her heart is the heart of a servant. My babies are so blessed to have her. Continue to glorify the LORD; Gramma’s are such a huge example in a childs life. God bless you girly.
I have a friend who is called “G-mama”. I think that is cute. Congratulations!
Congrats! That is great news! That song made me cry too! My youngest just turned one year yesterday. Time does fly!
Hope I win.
Amy
Colngratulations Ruthie!! There is nothing and I mean nothing like being a NANA (rhymes with ma-ma) I am of Italian heritage and we called grandma NONA, but somehow my little babies said NANA.. I am nana to three beautiful babies, and one more on the way, due in March. I can remember the first time my daughter had a baby, and I was in heaven. Each baby after that was even more special. My heart leaps with joy everytime one of them says nana!
Wonderful news. Prayers for a happy pregnancy; and delivery.
Congrats!……….Being a Grandma is the Best!….I am called
Me-Maw and love being with them as much as I can…
Hugs
Brenda
Congratulations on the new addition!
My mom loves being a Grammie! And my dad is known as Poppa.
Praying for a healthy pregnancy for Ashley!
Congratulations! I am actually newly pregnant myself, so I am very very excited about all the posibilities, too. I have baby #4 on the way after a vasectomy, vasectomy reversal, miscarriage, and a false positive. It has been an emotional journey!
Anyway, I always loved grams. That is what I call my own grandma. My aunt and uncle go by nana and papa for their grandchildren. It has always been very easy for the little ones to say!
I have the best grams in the world, I think! She always loves to tell me the story of having to be the first one to change my diaper in the hospital. I have always been scared of losing her since she is my last living grandmother. After recent cancer treatments, it has become even more frightening.
Well, congrats on the new addition to your family, and I wish a very healthy and happy 9 months to your daughter!
Congratulations! I just became a grandma myself this past year (twice) and it is the BEST! I chose to be ‘Nana’ – being a teacher, I know that little ones learn to speak from the back of the throat forward (that’s why they usually learn to say dada before mama), so I hope they will find nana easier to say than grandma. Other than that, you should choose whatever makes you feel good when your baby says your name! Just remember: A grandma is a mother with years of experience!
You will love your new role….I’m Maw-Maw to 7 and Great Maw-Maw to 1…..and there is no finer role to fill in life!! Congratulations to you, your daughter and her husband.
How exciting! Congrats to your family. I have a few name ideas for you. I think Nonni, Gram and Gran are all cute. Have fun deciding!
Best wishes to everyone!
Dear Aunt Ruthie,
Aw, my heart is just bursting for you! Congratulations to Ashley, her husband and your entire family! What an amazing new journey you all are about to undertake.
I am the oldest of four children, and my son (who is now almost five) was the first grandchild on both sides of the family. My parents were over the moon! My mom said if she knew grandkids would be this fun, she would have had them first!
I think there is such a joy in grandchildren in that you can totally spoil them and enjoy them, whereas often with our own children we are so busy with the day to day feeding, clothing, caring, etc that it makes it hard to step back and enjoy sometimes.
We are so blessed to have wonderful grandparents for our children who love them so, and who also support and encourage us!
I know you will be such a blessing to Ashley as she enters this new stage of her life, and I can’t think of a more incredible grandparent than Miss Aunt Ruthie!
Congratulations again to all and Ashley will have our prayers for her health and well-being!!
P.S. We are pretty old fashioned so both of sons’ grandmothers go by plain old grandma!!
Congratulations! I am Mama to three boys, the oldest of whom turned 4 today! I always have called my special Grandma “Gram” and that’s what I’ll be when I am a Grandma!
Katie
Ooooo~ Such sweet blessings on the way for you!
When my kids were little (They are now almost 17 & 15) we had a book they made me read OVER &OVER called “At Grammy’s House”. They still fondly remember this book (Which I STILL have!) and want me to some day be “Grammy”.
Blessings~LillySue
My son calls my mom Neeny (nee-nee). It wasn’t what we planned on him calling her…he came up with it himself and the same may happen for you! Congrats. What a blessing!
Congratulations Ruth Ann! Prayers going out for Ashley and her husband for a bouncing baby boy or girl. What an exciting time for you and your precious family. You will make an incredible Nonna to this new little gift from our heavenly Father.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Ruthie!
Oh, I”m so so happy for you! You will make a wonnnnnderful grandmother! They are blessed to have you!! Your daughter turned out so well because of your effervescent love!
Your post brought tears to my eyes!
My sons are 23 and 19 and when my oldest was a wee little one he couldn’t quite say grandma or pa so he called my Dad “goo goo” and it stuck..they became Grandma and Grandpa GooGoo. And to the day my Mom passed away from Ovarian cancer, my big tall boys called her Grandma Goo Goo. I think your darling will pick his/her own special name for you too as you go along!
One of the best things my Grandmother did for me was teach me to draw a simple little doggy cartoonish type thing. I draw it still when I doodle-taught my boys to draw it too.
Many blessings and prayers to you and yours!!

The last blog I just visited, Joni at “Centennial Farmhouse” also made this same exact announcement this morning. I am SO happy for you. I became a Grandma for the first time 2 months ago. I can’t explain the way this feels. It is so amazing, and I’d start to cry if I tried to explain it. I do have some bad news though – this is going to be the LONGEST 9 months of your life – ha!!!!
Let me tell you the BEST part about being Grandma. I, too, have a younger one at home, and to watch him with his new baby niece is the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen. He’s already her favorite. So, don’t be jealous Grandma (I still think that’s the best name) when Aunt Summer is the favorite.
Kathie
Oooh, Aunt Ruthie,
You are gonna be the sweetest grandmama in the whole wide world!
Congratulations to all your family. I’m sure they are all estatic!
I can see you being called “MeeMaw.” That sure is music to my ears because that’s what my grandchildren call me. Sweet, sweet.
You’re a generous soul. Please put my name in the give-away.
Love & Hugs,
Hattie tligon1@bellsouth.net
I am called Grammie by my two precious grand kids and my hubby is Grampie. The other grandparents are Mimi and Bampie. My grandmother used to make me homemade donuts and give them to us still warm! Oh the aroma and taste, I will never forget it!
Oh my, I am so happy for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My grandchildren call me Grandma Rosie and grandpa is Grandpa Rosie!! My name is Mary Ann not Rosie!! But, I love it, they can call me whatever they want. I love being a grandma!!
Aunt Ruthie: I know you are so excited you can hardly stand it!!! Congratulations! There’s nothing like a grandbaby to snuggle and coo with. They’re just wonderful. As for names, when my daughter was a baby, she called her Great Grandmother Gahmee! It didn’t stick and she called her Grandma, but when her first child, also a beautiful daughter was born, she called me Gahmee as well! It just so happens I had forgotten that, but when I pulled my daughter’s baby book out to give to my daughter since she was now a Mom, I read through all the pages and saw that she called her Great Grandmother Gahmee, so this time it took!! So the grandkids call me Gahmee or when they really want something, they call me Gam-Gam!! It’s wonderful being a grandmother. A world unlike any you’ve ever known is about to open up to you! It’s such a joy!
In everything, give thanks,
GrandmaSoucie
Congratulations! This is such exciting news for you! What joy new babies bring to the world but I can’t even imagine what new joy a grandchild must open up for a family.
The naming of grandparents is so fascinating! I’ve heard countless things and they usually come from the grandchildren themselves. Our daughter started calling my mother “Bamma” because she couldn’t say her “G’s” so it stuck! When our son was born, “Bamma” must have rubbed off on him so he started calling my husband’s father “Badda”…a cousin used to call our Grandpa “Boppa” and our Grandma, “MaMaMa”…there must be hundreds of things!
But “Glamma”…that’s a new one!
Blessings to you,
Catherine
I finally chose “Grandmama” for myself. My husband was dead set on being Grandaddy–just like his, and I wanted us to match…and it’s the sweetest sound in the world when that sweet little boy whispers, “Grandmama.” Just learning to talk and he whispers the words he’s not exactly sure of.
BTW, Love your blog and the inspiration you are giving everyone who reads it.
My son got married last Oct. 4th. They have had 2 miscarriages. I am praying that I get to be a Grandma soon as well. I want to be MeMaw. I like MeMaw and PaPaw or Granny and Granddaddy. :)
My Grandma was famous for her pancakes. She made them more like crepes and they were as big as your plate. She would endlessly stand there making pancakes until we were full. Even after I was married and visited with my son, she asked what I wanted for breakfast and got all tickled that I wanted her pancakes.
She loved to play games with us. She was a whiz at jacks.
Ekkkkkkkkkkkk! BLESSings from Heaven!!!!!! my dear sweet friend oh how happy i am for you and miss ashley! Ahhhhh my heart is so very joyful for your happy news…sweet lil’ ruthann you are gonna be the best “Gram’s” …ever!!!! Oh and how i think about how ashley will be…with all the goodness you have shown her…the comfort of having a momma who loves the Lord!!
My dear sweet friend my heart is so happy and full for you…you are going to be the best “Grammy Ruthie” oooooh my goodness that is like sugar cookies!!! i love you! ashley is in my prayers…cat~
Hi!! Congratulations on becoming a grandmother!! My MIL (and Mom) thought of cute names…they are Mia and Granna, respectively. My aunt decided to be called Honey which is also cute. It took them a while to decide. Hope this helps you out a little! :)
Ruthie…. I became a Gramma for the first time 2 years ago…Was one of the best days of my life. Such a privilege to watch my son and daughter-in-law parent this sweet child. I get the joy of babysitting him 2 days a week, and oh what fun we have together. I do sing “Jesus loves Micah” with him. He calls me Ga-wamma. Just the cutest… Congratulations and welcome to the club!
Congratulations! Grandchildren are truly a joy. I am Nana to two grandchildren.
How very exciting! Your Ashley and Glen are such a beautiful couple! So happy for them and all of you! I knew a wonderful lady who was called “Mama Ruth” by her grandchildren and the name stuck so that I never heard her called by any other name. Blessings to all of you!!!!!
Oh, oh! My brother’s grandchildren call him “Grampy” and their grandmother they call “Grammy” and I just love them! That’s what I want to be called if I have grandchildren! Congratulations to your entire family on this gift from God! Much love, Leslie Anne
Many congrats on becoming a grandmother! As a young mom myself, I can say that the sweet, wise and godly grandmothers of my children are a precious treasure!!!
When my daughter was expecting her first child my good girlfriend told me I must have a special name, anyone can be grandma, she said, you need your own name. My grandma was my best friend growing up. She taught me to crochet and took me shopping for Barbie clothes. We made things together and took walks. I loved her so much. I called her little because she was short and stout, and very German. My two granddaughters call me Oma in her honor. They call my husband Boomps, but that is another story.
Congratulations Grandma!! that’s my prefered name!! We didn’t live close to my only grandmother (we called her Gram) so my real memories are few- homemade cinnamon rolls, hot tea when we didn’t feel good, down home lima bean casserole (sounds awful, tastes heavenly), and silk scarves. My Gram was a lady in every sense of the work and almost always wore beautiful, silky scarves tied in the most unusual ways. I love being a gramdma 4 times over-how blessed I am. Bless you and your family-we’ss pray for health wealth, beauty , and wisdom for the new wee one.
Congratulations!!!!! I became Nana for the first time this past March. There is nothing like it. But the feeling of sitting in the waiting area waiting for her to be born. It dawns on you my baby is having a baby. I looked at my Mom and said I’ve never been on this side before, unlike she had. A feeling of helplessness as a Mom that this is one time you make the pain go away. But once you see that baby, there is such a love like just when you had your own child.
My sweet Mother went home to be with the Lord almost 5 years ago. I’m so thankful that I was able to give her three grandchildren who loved her with all they could and still remember her love and sweetness. Her name to them was “Grammy” so that name will always be very precious to us.
Blessings to you.
Adella
I just found out that I am going to be a first time Grandma too…..isn’t it just the best???? We are one ultrasound ahead of you and we are 80% sure to think PINK!!!!
Being a Dutch girl, our little Clare ( that is the name the kids have already picked out….love it) will call me Oma. And I have to share I had to turn the sound down when I read your blog, because that song just fills my heart with tooooo much emotion (G)!!!! God bless both of our babies and our lovely girls who carry this joyous news that makes my heart soar. XXX Annie
I’m Grandma Sugar!!
Whoo hoooo….a Grandma for the first time! My daughter Cassie is pregnant with my first grandchild too…a sweet little baby boy, who is due to make his arrival around November 7th! My children called my mom…Oma, which is german for Grandma. Don’t know if I can let them call me that…there was only one Oma and she’s with God now watching over us. I guess I’ll just still with nanna or Grammy…whatever they can say is alright with me!
Congratulations!
Michele
Ohhh I love babies. I have a niece who called my mother “Franny,” because she couldn’t say “Granny.” Also had a little friend years ago who called his grandmother “Gangy.” Whichever one you pick, out of all the names suggested, I hope your spirit will fly above the clouds when you hear this baby say it. This couple is just beautiful, both of them. God bless all.
THIS IS THE GREATEST NEWS, IT IS SO MUCH FUN BEING A GRANDMAW. I AM CALLED GRANDMAW AND I LOVE THAT.I HAD A NANNIE AND I LOVED THAT NAME TOO. MY NANNIE WAS A LOVING GRANDMOTHER AND TREATED ALL FIVE OF US THE SAME, SHE LOVED EACH ONE THE SAME AND TREATED US THE SAME. I LOVED THAT ABOUT HER .AND HAVE MANY MEMORIES OF VISITING HER IN WASHINGTON DC AND SHE WOULD TAKE US SIGHT SEEING EVERY TIME WE CAME. I SAY BE CALLED GRANDMAW I LOVE THAT NAME
Oh Congratulations!!!! I think I may be close to your daughter’s age and I have a precious one and a half rough and tumble baby boy… I still remember the morning I called my mom and woke her up to tell her she was going to be a Grandma! It was so exciting for both of us!!
My baby aaaaCharlie has a Grandma and a Nana… but I also have heard of grandmother’s called “Sugar” and “Honey” I think those are precious and would fit you well. :)
By the way I LOVE your blog and have found it to be such an inspiration as I am a stay at home mommy and want to do my best as a mother and a wife for my family! Thank you!!
How about Buscha, that’s Polish, or just Grandma Ruthie, that’s what my Gkids call me, Gr.ma Linda.
What wonderful news!!
My grandmother was always called “Nana” but I’ve always been partial to “Grammy”. Nana’s house was always such a peaceful refuge for me as my own home was often in turmoil. Not to mention those chocolate chip cookies!
Blessings to you and your family during this sweet season of your lives!!
Dear Ruthie, Congratulations!! What wonderful news!! I’ll be praying for Ashley to have a happy, healthy pregnancy. I’ve been following your blog for a while now and am always so blessed and cheered up after reading it and seeing your pretty home and your beautiful kids. My husband used to call his grandmother “Bakoos”. No one seems to know how he came up with that name for her and not that you’d want to be called that, but it is kind of cute the names that little ones will come up with on their own. My daughter, when she was a baby called my mom Meemawk and her other grandma Mamawk. She came up with it herself to differentiate between the two of them. I have no idea why she thought they needed that “k” on the end. Thanks for the smiles. God bless ya’ darlin’.

I go by mimi and my granddaughter just started calling me that, so you may get called something that your grandbaby decides, regardless being a mimi is a beautiful thing.
Vicky
Congrats Ruthie! How exciting for you and your family….your sweet blog post makes me want to have a grandbaby too. But, I’ll have to wait a few years. My oldest is only 14. Anyway, I think you should be called GRAMI. That’s what my children call my mom. I think it is such and endearing name. Some of my most precious memories of childhood are about standing at the kitchen counter baking with my grandmother whom we called “Mom Mom.” I learned how to bake at a young age because she took the time to let me work along side her. We made peach cobbler, cookies, pies, cornbread, chicken and dumplings, and my favorite…fried pies! I will never forget those times and her sweet willingness to let me “get my hands dirty” so to speak. I love your blog and know that you will be a “scrumdillyiscious” Grami. Hugs, Karen (kbuzz95610@yahoo.com)
Dear Ruthie – Many, many congratulations and very best wishes to you and your lovely family…..I will keep your beautiful ‘baby’ in my prayers as she waits for her baby.!
When we were growing up in England, we always called our grandparents Nanny and Grandad. Just about everyone does in England.
When we moved over here to the great USA – my kids still called my loving parents Nanny and Grandad. It just feels right…..
Congratulation! I would pick a grandma name that you like and then be open minded. My son started calling my mom Beema when he first learned to talk and the name stuck. And she loves it because it is the name he gave her. Best wishes and prayers to you and your lovely family. Thank you ofr your beautiful blog, it lifts my spirits and inspires me.
Wonderful news!! I can tell, you are already in love! My four grandchildren call me “MeMe” and I love it!
Yaaa-hoo! Congratulations to all of you!
My niece is the only child in our family and I started to refer to my mother as Grammy and it just stuck! Not only does my niece like it, it makes everyone else smile when they hear her call her grandmother that!
Many Blessings,
Melissa
Congratulations on the forthcoming blessed event. I always feel so sad for people with no children or grandchildren. I hope you live close enough to see your grandbaby very often. I have 7 grands and 6 step grands and I always wanted to be called either Granny, Grammy, or Juju but they call me Grandma Judy. That is what my kids taughr them to use. Whatever they call you, you will love hearing it and being with them.
Congratulations to Ashley, Glen and all of you as well. What exciting news! My children call my mom Grammy just as I did my own grandmother. I am so happy for all of you.
June
OH, Ruth Ann – I am squealing with delight for you and grandpa !
Our oldest & her hubby are 25 – no baby yet, but you can sure shootin believe that future grandlovie has been prayed for a million times over – Lord knows when they will be ready :)
I too have thought of the traditional grandma – who doesn’t have a wonderful memory or 100 ? however I like “myma” possesive I know, but cute as all get out.
with warmth and affection

Congratulations my fabulous sista! I am overjoyed for you! There is nothing like it in the entire world. Just you wait till that baby gets here…if you think you are over the top now ….you’ll be falling off the cliff then! Bella is only 4 months now but i want her to call me Kay-Kay…I think we’ve already had this convo! I have a friend who is called “Gigi” which is cute but I’m thinkin you need to be Pie-pie! In honor of all your glorious pies! Or Rupie would be cute also! I am just soooo excited for ya! Blessings and have a wonderful time waiting for that baby!
Love ya!
Patti
We’re Italian, so my children call my mother Nonna or Nonnie. So cute.
My little ones melt my heart when they call me “Grammie”
I literally jumped for joy when I read this – woooooohoooooo! Congrats to you my dear. I grw up with only 1 grandparent and he was my Papa – so very dear to me. God is so good – he gives us blessings and asks for so little in return. I am amzed at his goodness sometimes (even during the tough times).
Blessings to all of you!

Congratulations to the wonderful journey of being a grandparent!
I am amazed at all the comments for “NANA”…as I chose this also because I felt it made a distinct link to me as an individual in my g’kids lives…with them having other grandparents. My husband is Papa. When I hear the name Nana I feel a sweet bond with the little ones.
One of my 9 nine grandchildren introduced me one day…
“this is MY NANA” so sweetly personal!
Nana… N is for her Never ending love
A is for her Always looking in faith above!
N is for her Nice-delightful visits we share
A is for her Apron pockets filled with goodies so fair!
God bless you with a healthy grandchild!
HOPE~
I so love your blog so much and can hardly wait till your next post. You are always such an inspiration to me and for that I thank you. I have 3 beautiful granddaughters and if I knew they were so much fun, I would have had them first!! (smile). I am so happy for you and your precious family. Please enter me into your awesome drawing. I don’t have a blog, but maybe sometime soon…
First of all CONGRATULATION’S to you all! It’s such a blessing to have a new baby on a family! Grandbabies are SO nice too!
My parents were divorced when I was very young. My mother remarried and my new step-grama took on 4 more children as a result of that marriage. She ALWAYS treated us the same as her very own natural family grandchildren…always, always. always! We always called her “Grammie”. I never heard her ever raise her voice to any of us..but always shook her head and smiled at us though when we were being the little stinkers…ha! When my 2 grand children were young they just out of the blue started calling me “grammie” too. As they grew the name evolved to Grams….but I always feel so special when they call me that… they seem to think I’d ever fill MY “Grammies” shoes is always amazing to me!
I’d love to be included in your little celebration drawing! Thanks so much!
Lynn S. in Mn.
OMG! Congratulations…. I can just see it now, you will have that little one baking pies before he/she can walk :) I am expecting baby #5 myself and there is no greater blessing in the world. Congratulations to you all!!!!
I love “grandmama”, but it is a mouthful!!!
this is going to be one beautiful baby because it has gorgeous parents!!!!! congrats to all of you!
Hi Auntie Ruthie
Wow! Thanks great news! My daughter in law had a good idea. She said as her baby gets older that the baby would say Grandmas name naturally… I think Grandma Ruthie is darling or Grandma Sugar! or Grandma Cakes! It has a sweetness about it. Happy day. Kathy
I decided on Nana myself but I have a friend and her Grandchildren call her Gigi. It’s a tough decision but you have plenty of time to think about it. Oh, it’s so wonderful being a grandma. You’ll absolutely love it.
Congratulations on such a wonderful blessing! My two call me Grammy. No sweeter sound than to knock at their front door and hear: “Grammy’s here !” Praying for you and your precious daughter and her hubby . Isn’t God awesome !
Congratulations!!!! Bing a grandmother brings such joy to my life – to see my son’s eyes in his son is so exciting. I love it when they jump out of the car and run into my arms yelling “Nanny, Nanny” (it’s English).
You will have so much fun with this new bundle of joy. And to share it with your daughter makes it all the more special.
Enjoy these next few months of her pregnancy.
Congradulations!! Blessing to you and all of your family, what an exciting time for everyone. As for “baby’s name for grandma” I would wait and see what develops when your darlin’ grandbaby starts to talk some times the nicknames just sort of happen. I remember Sunday dinners at my Grams and we would make fried dough…yum! Also making Christmas cookies every year, Gram didn’t care how we decorated them or seem to mind to much about the mess we always made with all those sprinkles.
Oh Aunt Ruthie! How super blessed your Grandbaby is to have you waiting so lovingly and prayerfully for Him or Her! You are SO SMART to figure this out before the birth because if you don’t, the default is definitely “grandma” and the way kids say it makes you feel sooooooooooooo old AND YOU ARE NOT!
I think you are Mimi or Grammy. Mimi is very elegant yet sounds approachable, sweet and loving. In California, Mimi’s Cafe is a very popular restaurant chain that is very Frenchy, decorated with so much detail and has really good food! I know a gal who goes by Mimi and has 8 grandkids. Every summer they all go to her house for a week for “Mimi’s Summer Camp”! She plans it all out with special food, crafts, you can only imagine. She journals the entire thing each year and even as the kids grow up, they can’t wait to go. Your will be that kind of “grandma”.
I think Grammy is cute because you will clearly always be up for
“GRAMMY AWARDS”. You could also give THEM “grammy awards”. Get the idea?????
This will be so very fun to follow. LOVE your blog. You got me back to making pies again! Did sooooooooooomany in the 70’s
when I was a 20 year old bride. (We had an apricot tree and between jam and pies, no fruit died on my watch unless the birds killed them first! Thank you for your decorating and culinary loving inspirations that just keep coming. LOVE YOU!!!!
First of all, I want to say that I just LOVE your blog!!! Thank you. You encourage me in so many ways. Especially to be the best godly wife, mother, and homemaker as God’s created me to be. So many women ask where the godly women are to mentor and train the younger women up. Boy do I wish that I could know you in person and be able to learn from you. But know that you already do so much through your blog. Again I say thank you.
As for a name….I always called my Grandma, Grandma. And my 19th mth old son hasn’t yet given my mom a name. It’s easier to say Papa! I have tried to get him to say Nana though….so there you go! (Just remember…the easier it is to say, the sooner your grandbaby will say it!)
Oh, and the memory that I can share about my grandma was how she’d let us go to the grocery store and pick out a special cereal just for us whenever we were staying at their house. (I think she knew what I’d pick, but she also knew that getting it was part of the fun!!!) Congrats! I know you’re going to have so much fun getting ready for your first grandbaby. I know my Mom did and still does with each one that’s been born!

Psalm 103:1
Oh, is there any better news than this? Congrats to Ashley and Glenn – absolutely wonderful! My little one calls my mom Grandma and my hubby’s mom Abuelita – it works for us, but then his mom speaks primarily Spanish, so I know it probably wouldn’t work for everybody.
Over the moon excited for you!
I loved both my “Nannys”! One Nanny lived next door: I loved popping by to visit her because she would give me tea with lots of milk and she always had chewing gum up in her cupboard by her fancy tea cups. My other Nanny and I did many things together. She always slept with me when I came to visit (Poppy snored terribly); and she kept mints under her pillow (for her dry mouth). She always bought me an Easter hat for church; and she taught me to make pies and paid me a quarter for picking her black currants so she could make jam. I miss my Nannys!
Thanks for entering me in this awesome giveaway. And congratulations on the wonderful news.
Oh, Congratulations! My husband and I are also expecting our first, and it’s pretty much been all I think about! We are having a “sugar and spice,” and she is the first grandchild for my husband’s parents. So, they are excited about their new title too! So far my favorite part has been to feel her move–those sweet little baby kicks/flutters. My mom always insisted on being called Granny. :) One of my grandmas is still alive–in her 90’s–and is making something for our baby girl. Through the years, she has made many pretty embroidered towels, table scarves, doilies, etc., for her children and grandchildren. They will be treasured keepsakes. I always liked her sugar cookies, too!
My name is “Granna” and my husband is “Poppa”. Can’t forget giving that “grand-pa” a name huh? But, I have a sweet friend who is going by “g-g” or maybe “gigi”. I thought that was a cute one and kindof a takeoff on “mimi” or “meemee”!
I grew up calling some very close family friends “g-ma” and g-pa” and to this day (they are both deceased) that is how I refer to them!
My most favorite memories of one of my grandmother’s, (her name was Trinken to us girls, b/c she named my older sister “trinket” cuz she was so very little, and that name came back to her in the form of Trinken that my sister gave her), was when we got to come to her home in the summers and swim in the neighborhood swimming pool, eat her wonderful lunch sandwiches and watch her do needlepoint….she lived to be a wonderful age of 100, outliving her favorite famous people Bob Hope & Ronald Reagan. President Reagan died the day before she did. Jesus took her home the next day. Special woman she was to me and lots of others too!
Thanks for letting me ramble! And, congratulations to you! You will make a most fine Grand-mama!
I am so happy for you. Being a grandma is the BEST. There is nothing like it! I LOVE being a grandma. My two grandsons call me grandma glory.
My girlfriends grandchild calls her Lolly and her husband Pop. Together they are Lolly-Pop. How cute is that!!! I will keep your precious daughter Ashley in my prayers.
~TL~
Congratulations on your wonderful news. I pray her pregnancy goes nice and smooth. I’m sure you’re grinning ear to ear with the news. Again Congrats!
I love being a Grammy of a sweet girl in North Carolina. It’s tough living 700 miles away from her. I hope, for you sake, that you’ll be closer, mile-wise to your sweet baby.
Hi and I am so happy for you and the rest of the family !!
First of all I love and appreciate your site. Very wonderful, inspiring, and beautiful.
I lived in a house right behind my grands, and I needed to distinguish between my mom and my grandma when I was first learning to talk. So I called my grandmother: Mama Jo (as her name was Josephine.)
FF many years-my baby daughter and I were living w/ my mom while my husband was in Viet Nam. I would bring her down every morning, and my mom would say-How is my Precious? You gussed it !! My mom, at 82, is still called Grandma Precious by her 4 Grands, and 7 great grands. Her nick name is “Presh” !!
One final thought—–I once had a nurse that told me her grands called her Grandmoney–because she spent so much money on them !!
Believe me—-there is truly no finer gift than a little grandbaby. Your DD and SIL are so very attractive, I KNOW this little bundle will steal the hearts of all that meet him/her !!
Cece
Congrats!
I so happy for you all!
Children are a blessin’ from God!
I will keep you all in my prayers that all goes well!
Blessings,
Georgiann (momma of 6 blessings so far!)
Congrats, Aundt Ruthie! You are so blessed! And Ashley has been blessed by having you as her Mama. My children have Grandma (DH’s mom) and Grammy (my mom). When I was a child, I had Grandma (my mom’s mom) and Meemaw (my dad’s mom). I vote for Grammy! Or as my oldest used to say when she was learning to talk, “Gam”.
Congratulations, that is wonderful news! My daugther is only 17 months old, but that poem/song made me cry….time does go by quickly with children, doesn’t it? My mom is “grammy” to our daugther. What an exciting time for all of you! Many, many blessings on your family!
~ Melissa
Oh Congratulations Ruthie! Growing up I had 2 grandma’s (Grandma Elaine and Grandma Sweet) and a step-grandmother, Granny. I cherished all of the moments shared with all 3, but Grandma Sweet (Matilda – my paternal grandmother) was surely my favorite. My fondest memories with her were spent in the kitchen. She taught me how to bake breads, cookies, pies, cakes, etc. I remember during the summers when I would get to go stay at her house with her and we would stay up late watching old reruns of the Walton’s and we would just giggle and giggle together! I could listen to her for hours as she would tell me wonderful stories about growing up in the early 1900’s. Her last name was Potter, so of course she read the collection of Beatrix Potter, as well as many other stories, and the scriptures. I loved story time. I was so saddened to watch her struggle through those last years, but I know she was welcomed into God’s arms in Heaven. I’m so very excited for you Ruthie. I’ve been following your blog for the last year and a half and I just think you are such a wonderful woman. You are sure to be a Grandma-Come True! Congratulations, again.
Hello and congrats to you Ruthie! I am so silly to have never left a comment until a giveaway! Well let me start by saying that the minute I get the email notifying me of a new post I head on over here to see what you have been up to. I did not grow up in a Christian home and would have given anything for the home you so sweetly made for your children. So now that I have children of my own I want to be the Mom that you are, sweet, godly, always loving and ready for a good time in the kitchen! Our 6th child was born 2 months early in June and due to the nature of her traumatic birth she will unfortunately be my last sweet babe. Seeing the pictures of your Ashley reminded me how quickly time flies, and also how good God has been to you and to me to give us girlies. My vote for your new wonderful position is “Grammy.” This name to me fits the picture I have in my mind of a little grand baby climbing up in your lap asking for just one more cookie. Again, though we may never meet this side of heaven, I do believe you will reap great rewards from the faith you have encouraged in folks like me. You cause me to lift my “eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help.” Much blessings!
Congrats!!!! Im a grandmother to 4. The oldest Ezzie started calling me Mimi and I love it. I hope your daughter Ashley has a safe and easy pregnancy. I know how excited you must be, theres nothing like being a grandparent. I have been there when all my grands were born. I went a little overboard with buying for the first one Ezzie, but I was so excited and when I went to the dr with my daughter and saw the ultrasound—tears of joy rolled down my cheek.
With the new 3-D ultrasounds you can see so much more than before, I have one of each of the grands ultrasounds framed so that I
will be able to give it to them when they are older. Once again congrats to you and your family.
Congrats to you and your family!
Praying for you all!
Oh how exciting! Two of my five children are grown and I look forward to the day when I will have grandbabies. My husband’s favorite grandma was called “Big Mama” and my sons are saying that’s what they’ll have their children call me. :) I think they are just teasing…I’m not sure I want to be called “Big”.
I once heard of a grandmother called “Honey Gram” and I thought that was adorable. My younger daughter’s best friend calls her grandparents “Oma” and “Opa” which is cute too. I think it’s German.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! My first grandchild was born Sept.7. There is nothing that compairs to it. God is SO good.I will keep them in my prayers.
CONGRATULATIONS, DEAR RUTHIE!!!! Wow, I can’t imagine how it will feel when my baby girl has a baby!!! :)
How about Nana Ruthie??????
Lots of hugs to you!!!
What a sweet reward! Many blessings to you and yours. Grandbabies are just special beyond words and deserving of all the love in the world. My best gal pal is a grandmother and they call her Uma (or maybe it’s Oma). Another pal is “Ya-Ya”.
To me, my grandmother was just “grandma”. She’s the one that taught me all about breakfast with homemade biscuits, country ham and red-eye gravy served along with buttery grits, and a side of home grown tomatoes. She’s been gone over 30 years now, but whenever I cook like that, the smells take me right back to her kitchen in Louisiana.
How wonderful for you! Congratulations!
Hmmm….there are so many grandma names, aren’t there? We call our grandmas, well, Grandma Jo or Grandma Nancy. Not very inventive! Nana is cute and so is Gammy.
My Grandma Jo makes wonderful strawberry freezer jam and always seems to have cookies in her cookie jar. Grandma Nancy would set a beautiful table with her china for our holiday meals. Now I get to use her china! Grama’s are the best!
I became a grandma for the first time this past January and let me tell you there are no words to describe how you feel about that baby!
I thought I loved my own children with all my heart but when I laid eyes on my new granddaughter it was as if I had never understood love before. I love every inch of her and can’t get enough of her!
You will certainly be in heaven too when that baby arrives! Your daughter and son-in-law are a handsome couple so you will have a beautiful baby for sure!
Congratulations and isn’t God good??
Okay, tears are filling in my eyes like a hose in my kids’ blow-up pool! You get to be a SugaMa!! My heart knows that yearning, yet unfulfilled, and so…. hoooooray for the joys that await you as you get to loll around this life with a Sugarbaby! Oh what fun! You are going to be the funnest, greatest, most loving SugaMa ever! Congrats to your daughter and her hubby!
My Grandma Royal is the Queen of Granny’s. I love her to pieces. She is a one-of-a-kind gem, who loved us grandkids hanging around, treated us as if we were the treasures in her chest, accepted us exactly as God made us – even through our terrible teen years! – and would whistle and dance and cook and play games and just sit on her front porch and watch the air with us. I love her dearly. She’s now 94…sigh. I think I better go take her lunch today!
Joy, joy, joy is all I can think of for you! Blessings of joy – yay!!!
Congratulations! What joyful news. I think you should be called Grandma Ruthie,
Love and Blessings,
Nancy
Oh, that is wonderful news!! My Mother-in-law goes by Nai Nai{spoken with a long i}, its Chinese for Grandma.
So happy for you and Ashley!!
Elise
Congratualtions to you!! My picked name is GiGi (Grandma Gail). My own dear grandmother was such a blessing to me. I have her and my own mother as the most wonderful examples of *how to Grandmother*. Grandma has a way of making me always feel very special…even if only to her, lol.
Blessings to you!
Gail
Congrats on the grandbaby! What a blessing!!! As for the name…we called ours Grandma, Grandma Rose, Rosie, Gma, and my personal fave…Grams! So my suggestion box entry is ‘Grams’! Grandma Rose is awesome–11 kids, 19 grandkids, and 12 great-grandkids! I have so many great memories of her, which one do I share? Two that I can remember revolve around food, of course! The first is simple…she always had a bowl of washed grapes on the diningroom table for kids to snack on–always! It’s a simple memory, but for some reason it’s always stuck with me. The other memory is of her making homemade chicken noodle soup, including homemade noodles. She would roll out the dough and always have a bunch of huge circles of dough drying out on the counters and table. Then when it was dry, she sliced them into noodles and always set some aside for us to eat ‘raw’! Her soup is the best!! Love you, Grams!
I like nana. :-) that’s what my dog “calls” my mom, ha ha.
I loved that my grandma would read to me when I was little. I have a pic of me and her and that’s a special moment in my heart.
Congratulations! Do you know when Ashley is due?
Congratulations, being a GMa is better than being a Mom. You are truely blessed. Love your blog.
Congratulations on your upcoming “Grandmotherhood”! I don’t have any suggestion for what to be called ~ I have found that the baby will have a special name for you. Our second grand couldn’t say grandpa ~ she called him “bugga”! ;~}
Grandparents are very special to me as I was raised by mine. My Grandmother was “Gram” in name only as she was really my Mom. I loved her so!
There is just a very special relationship between grandparents and their precious grandbabies. God bless you in your ‘grand’ new role.
Blessings!
Oh, congratulations! I always liked “GranGran” as a nickname, even though my sisters and I just called our grandmas “Gramma.” Thanks for the lovely giveaway! :)
Awww…congratulations! You’ll be an awesome grandma :-)
Oh, I loved reading your post!. My little ones call my mom Memaw, it is a sweet reference to their swedish heritage. Your grandbaby is going to be so lucky to have you for all your talent and creativity. My oldest is just 15 so many years yet, but your post warms my heart for whats to come!!
congrats!!!!
Congrats!
I love the images you use on your blog! Lovely! :-)
My mother always went by Nannie for my children. They did not get a lot of time with her as she passed away to soon. However we talk about Nannie a lot and remember her through pictures and little notes she would always leave around for the kids. We talk of her often and miss her so much. We know though that she is sitting with Jesus and can only imagine the beauty that surrounds her now.
My own grandmother was blind. The last time she saw me with her eyes I was 6 months old. So throughout my growing years and up until she passed when I was 17, she would loving “see” me with her hands. She would gently start and the top of my head, feel my hair and run her fingers gently over my face…my eyes, my nose, my lips..and then tell me how very beautiful I was. I can still feel her hands on my cheeks when I close my eyes and think of her.
Good Morning Ruthann,
I am so overjoyed for you and your family with the addition of the newest Blessing the Lord has bestowed upon you.
I know many have given ideas on what the baby should refer to you as, but I think when this little Blessing begins to speak the name they call you is what it should be. My reason for that is because it will be natural and not contrived.
BTW, the gifts you are giving away are absolutely beautiful.
Blessings,
Rebecca
How exciting! My only grandchild will be one year old this month so I know exactly how you are feeling. There is nothing like them on this earth. I can’t wait for many, many more. I’m sure you will be a wonderful grandmother.
Teresa
Ruth, congrats…that baby is going to have the best grandma (and family) ever!
How wonderful that you will be a grandma! As a grandmother of two grandsons with the third due any time, I know what special times are ahead for you. I love being grandma “Nana”…..it’s truly a blessing from heaven! You will be an incredible grandmother and my prayers are with you and yours. Here are some ideas for “grandma” names to consider: nana, nanny, grandma, gamma, nona, mimi, mamie, grammommie, gran gran, gammie, nini, nonni, gannie, and gams. There’s tons more out there, but I thought these were special. Once again, CONGRATULATIONS!
LOVE your news!! So sweet! You will be a wonderful grandma! My three boys call my mom ‘Grams’ and my husband’s mom ‘Granny’ and we have a bonus grandma who we call ‘GiGi’ So much fun!!! I call my grandmother ‘C.C.’ When my mother was expecting my older sister, CC was not quite ready to be a grandma :) Her name is Claudetta Coett, so CC it was! She is a VERY sassy 74 and has more shoes than I could collect in a lifetime. Blessings to you and to Ashley! Happy fall, Jen
Oh Ruthie!!! What a blessing :) I will most definitely be keeping Ashley and Glen and the little one in my prayers! I don’t have children or grandchildren but we called My Dad’s Mom Nana and My Mom’s Mom Meme (she’s French). Congratulations!!!
OH, how wonderful! Congratulations all around. I’m sure Summer is about to burst with the thought of being an Auntie! I called both of my grandmothers “Gramma” , my children call my mom “Gramma” and I can hardly wait to hear that name applied to myself. The one thing that I really remember about both of my grammas is that they always had time for me. Even when they were going about their chores there was time for me, my thoughts, my hopes, my dreams. I’m sure they gave excellent advice as I see it played out in my own life but I couldn’t tell you a single thing they said, but I do remember the sitting and chatting while working and the sheer availability of them both. I miss them both.
Congratulations! What a wonderful blessing for your family! I hope all goes well for your daughter. I truly enjoy your blog about your family and life in the Ozarks. My family lived in and around Camdenton for 13 years, so I understand (and miss) the beauty down there. (I’m roughing it up in Iowa now!)
My Mom wanted to be called Grandma and my Mother-in-law wanted to be Nana. However, the grandchildren all pick their own names for the grandparents. Both grandmothers are “Grammer” and my dad is PapPap and my father-in-law is PawPaw.
I used to spend the entire summer with my Grandparents from the time school let out until a day or two before it started. Those are some of the most cherished memories of my life. Sheer freedom and love.
Congratulations! Grandchildren are just wonderful. Mine call me Gammy. Doesn’t sound so old…yeah right.
My first was born 3 months early and weighed 1 lb, 11 oz. So when he managed to stay with us and learned to say Gammy, it was beautiful music! He is now a kindergartner, and I took him bowling the other day…
My grandmother always worked hard on the farm when we were growing up, but when we were coming to visit, she always had sugar cookies in the cookie jar. I have that same recipe book now, and sometimes I make them for my grandchildren.
Congratulations!!! I called my one grandma who lived in the south Gommie and the other one YaYa which means grandma in Greek. Kathy
Oh joyful congratulations Aunt Ruthie!! What a thrill. I love that you said you’d waited a lifetime for this… and what’s more precious than a newborn baby to snuggle?
My children call their Grandmother “Grammie” which isn’t very original, but she seems to love it. Apparently whatever they call you, you love.
My most favorite memory of my grandmother is of when she would come to stay with our family over the holidays. She would bring pizza, kick my parents out for a date night, and read us stories. She would make doll clothes for my barbies, and sleep in my bed, while I happily slept on the floor in a sleeping bag right next to her. She wore pretty nightgowns, and she smelled really good all the time. Also, her face was like velvet. She is suffering from demensia right now, and though it’s sad how much of my grandmother is no longer there, it’s such a blessing to know she loves the Lord, and I know she adored me! Grandmother’s are such a delight, and you’ll be an amazing one!
Blessings on this fun adventure to you and your daughter!
Sasha (Lemonade Makin’ Mama)
What a wonderful time in your life!!! Thanks be to God for all his many blessings:~D
Grand-mama, Granny Ruth, Grandmother…it will be a grand affair!
My dear Grandma Josephine took me everywhere with her and ended up raising me. She worked from sun up til sun down; showed me how to be frugal, kind, generous; and always had her hands busy when she sat down piecing quilts. While she sewed I knit. Her example of living a Christian life of serving is her greatest legacy.
How exciting! Congrats on your new grandbaby. My kids called both their grandmothers, ‘Gramma’ when they were with them but in the times when they were away from their gramma’s and were referring to them in a conversation, they would call them ‘Gramma Durie’ or ‘Gramma Martin’ to distinguish between the two. I knew when my first grandchild came along (I now have 11) that I wanted to be called something different from the other grammas so that they wouldn’t have to refer to me by my last name. That is just tooo formal for me. I decided on ‘Grammie’. And there’s definitely no confusion as to which gramma they are referring to. lol
Congratulations to you and your family for this wonderful baby news! How exciting!! I am a mom of two young boys and when my first was born, my mom suggested he call her “Grammy.” When he began saying his first words, he couldn’t say Grammy but shortened it to Mimi. So, that’s what all the grandkids call her now. I remember my Grandma always kept a drawer in her house filled with fun games, books, crayons and coloring books. We always had fun finding things to do in this drawer whenever we visited her house. I love your blog! Thank you so much for all you do and the encouragement you give!
Ruthie,
Congratulations! How exciting to have your baby expecting a baby.
God bless sweet Ashley and all of you as you enjoy this time together.
xox
Congratulations Ruthann! How wonderful! You must be thrilled beyond words. You will make the most amazing grandmother I’m sure. And I just know that little baby is going to be gorgeous, just look at his/her gorgeous parents! Congrats to Ashley & Glen!!
In all honestly, my grandmother was the second most important and most influential person in my life (my mother being #1 of course). I was extremely lucky to have been blessed to have her in my life for 38 years until she passed at nearly 91. She was simply “Gram” or “Grammy” (my great-grandmother lived above us in a two family when I was small, so I called her “Grammy-Upstairs). When I was very small, my family lived w/my grandparents. Gram and would have tea parties in the afternoon with real china cups and saucers. When it poured rain in the summer we sat out on the front porch and watched the “rivers” flow down the street while the “angels bowled” above (her term for thunder). My grandmother and I spent so much time together and so many hours on the phone after my family moved. We just chatted about everything and nothing all at once. She shared all her “bling” & “baubles” with me for any special occassion (proms, weddings, etc.). She even let me hang all the crystal prisms from a lamp in the window so I could create rainbows everywhere, like the scene I saw in the movie Pollyanna. There are so many things I miss and think about each day. It would be impossible to narrow it down to just one or two. I just know I am a better person for having had her in my life.
Ruthann, you too, I’m sure willl have such a wonderful & memorable relationship with your new grandchild-to-be. It truly is one of the best blessings one can recieve.
My children are just 6 and 9 so grandmotherhood is a ways off for me, but a lady I know has a bible for each grandchild that she makes notes in just for them. She highlights verses that she prays over them and even records memories and blessings straight from her grandmotherly heart. The grandkids are allowed to look at them when they visit, but of course won’t get them until she goes home to meet her Savior. But I just think it is the sweetest thing.
Also my Meemaw always had a candy jar full of our favorite sweets and she bought me junkie cereal (you see my mom, her daughter, was strict about that sort of thing. But meemaw got away with it!) Its a simple thing, but I alway looked forward to it. She also a had “secret drawer” in her kitchen that she kept filled with simple things—dollar store treasures, stickers and pennies and such. That the grownups were not allowed to go into. It was just for us kids. I loved it and found it very magical.
Congratulations on your Grandbaby!
Congratulations!!!! What wonderful and exciting news!!
“Gran” is cute…….
Ooooh grandbabies are such a joyous gift from God. I have a nine month old granddaughter. My two daughters decided that I should be called Gigi. Well my granddaughter says my name and it sounds like Giggy. So that’s probably what I will be. Oh how I LOVE to hear her say that! It sounds so sweet, I really like it! I have so many wonderful memories of my Maw Maw, but what I remember most is when she would teach me to crochet and embroider, and I am so glad that she did. She was a wonderful Maw Maw. She asked me one time what I wanted to be when I grow-up,and I said I wanted to be a Maw Maw just like her! And oh do I love being a Giggy. Oh and I am going to have another granddaughter the first part of November! I can’t wait! Counting down the days now! Love You and your blog! (sandra-jo@hotmail.com)
Congrats Ruthie! What a wonderful, joyous event a new baby is for a family. Ahhh… that sweet new baby smell, the smell of God’s love!
Growing up I only had one Grandma, but what a Grandma! She and Grandpa lived a couples doors down the road, and worked in the General Store that my family owned, I saw her everyday growing up. She taught me so much about gardening, cooking, music, her sense of duty to God and community. The cookie jar was never empty, the table could always be set with another plate and she was never to busy to welcome me to talk. I love her so and miss her terribly.
She was alway Grandma to us, but I think that the cutest names come from the baby themselves.
I know you will be a fabulous Grandma just like mine, a blessing to both the little babe and the parents.
SO happy for you! I always just like the name “Gramma”. That’s how we said it in Minnesota!
I loved it that my grammas (never knew my grampas :( ) had each of their grandkids over one at a time for a special time once a year – usually in the summer or over a long weekend. We would bake, shop, play games, do crossword puzzles, talk, laugh, and make MEMORIES that I still fondly keep with me. My maternal gramma has 17 grandkids so we must have plumb wore her out!!!
BTW, I am expecting my first baby too! We are planning on telling my mom this weekend after we (hopefuly) hear the heartbeat at my appointment TOMORROW! Tomorrow I also start my 2nd Trimester – can’t believe it! My mom will be SO shocked but SO excited! My dad died in 2008 and I long to tell him too, but I think maybe he knows…. ;)
Oh, and the woman I work for (whose name is Ruth Ann also!) has her grandkids call her “Ga Ga”. But they are little, so I don’t know how long that will last!
i just became a grandma for the first time in june…my grandson is the most beautiful baby in the universe…but don’t we all think that ours is the most special?…lol…i live 40 miles from my daughter, and each week i go down and care for my grandson so she can work…in february of this year i lost my son heath, and my daughter named my grandson heath, in honor of her brother…god has been so good to me to give me a grandchild to help ease my aching heart… i never knew how great the grandma experience would b…i love it!!
Congrats. Being a grandmother is the absolute best. My sweet grandchildren call me Lala. My oldest grandchild, Emily named me that and now my grandson Caleb calls me Lala also. I love it.
G Ma is the special name my kids have for my mom. It started with my son because it was easier for him to say and it just stayed because it was cute, short and full of love.
My mom is the best G Ma ever, just ask my kids. They are very quick to tell anyone who will listen. When they are with her, she is totally in the moment with them. She never minds about the mess in the kitchen from the flour that got “puffed” everywhere when making cookies. She can clean that up later. If there is snow on the ground and the kids are sled riding, so is she and when they are done she enjoys a big cup of cocoa just like them! And if the kids are playing in the dirt, so is she. Whatever they enjoy, she does too, just because they are together.

Congrats!! I am a NanNan 3 times now. They are the joy of my life. I called one of my g.ma’s MamMa and the other one Mommie. G.babies are truly a gift from God.
Dear Ruthie!
I am so happy for you and your family! How sweet! How special to have a new baby to love! My Grandma is one of the most important and influential people in my life. She grew up poor in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. She started working when she was 14 years old and worked her entire life as a waitress, telephone operator, and then for the Detroit Public Schools as a secretary. She bought my sister and I school clothes from Hudson’s (no longer around!) every fall. She bought us matching outfits for all the holidays. I talk to her on the phone multiple times each day. She is 86 now and until her health took a turn for the worst about a year and a half ago she was still driving and would come over and iron my husband’s shirts!!!! I love her more than life itself really. The BEST THING IN THE WORLD THOUGH is having my sweet daughter Marielle grow up knowing her Great-Grandma. Marielle is lucky to have all her grandparents plus her “Big Grandma” as she calls my Grandma. She named her that when she first could talk. She calls my mom “Grandma Cindy” and my Grandma “Big Grandma” because she is older! Not because she is big! She weighs 100 pounds soaking wet! My Grandma loves Marielle more than life itself. I think good ‘ole grandma is the best name for the most special person!
Congratulations again! I love your posts!
Sincerely,
Patti Hill

Blessings & Smiles!
Congrats!!! It’s so exciting =)
My mom is called Grammy (with “m”) and my MIL is called “Nana” My BFF’s mom is called GoGo (which is grandma in Swaziland, Africa)
One of my favorite memories with my grandma is when she used to take us “exploring”. They lived out in the country and she’d load us kids up in their van and we go driving for the longest time trying to find new sites we hadn’t yet seen. It was always a great time!!
First, thank you for your inspiration and words that help me to remember what are truly the most important things in life, love of our Lord, and the blessings of family. My oldest grandchild was born on my birthday and every year I tell him that the most wonderful birthday I ever had was the one he was born. That day I fell in love with him just the moment I saw him and I treasure every time I get to hold his little hand. Our children decided what to call us as grandparents, and I am Mammaw. Truly, I love to hear someone calling me that better than my own name. Honestly, being a grandparent is simply the best, because it is such a loving relationship. I don’t worry about raising my grandchildren, that is our children’s job. I thank God that our children are wonderful, loving parents. Really, if you never believed in miracles before, you will now! I will look forward to reading about the extra joy you will soon have in your lives.–Deb
O dear Aunt Ruthie, or shout I say, dear Grandma Ruthie? How wonderful! What great news! Very, very much congratulations from The Netherlands. How lovely it would be to have you as a grandmother. I am sure that you are the best granny a young child could wish for.
Lots of fun in preparing yourself and your daughter to your new functions in life. A happy and graceful time to you all!
Love from Mama Monique
Congratulations, such wonderful news!
My mom goes by Gammie and I love it.
Everyone called my mother’s mom, Mom. Mom was very special to me. She always made green beans for dinner when I was there since they were my favorite. She was a farmer’s daughter and then a farmer’s wife so she knew her away around the garden and kitchen. She wasn’t afraid to let me help and never became upset when I messed something up. She always knew how to step right in and show me how to make it right. Oh how I miss her!
I havn’t read all the comments so I don’t know if this has been suggested, but I’m in love with Marmee for a Grandma’s name, from a favorite movie and book of course! I bought the sound track finally after reading your delightful blog and your mentioning of it. I LOVE IT!
Ashley and Glen will be in my prayers, such exciting news! Congratulations to the whole family!
I have 8 blessings and 5 darling grands with one on the way. Most call me Nammaw with Grandpa calling me Nanny Pammy as my name is Pamela! Children are a blessing from the Lord and grands are a special blessing. My youngest child and first grandson are 5 days apart which makes a very interesting family. I don’t feel old enough to be a granny with young children still! Get togethers are very noicy with lots of fun. I am very thankful for how the Lord has blessed me.
I’ve always been just Grandma to my grandsons, but my granddaughter calls me Nana. She calls grandpa PopPop. My husband loves it b/c that’s what he called his grandparents, Nan and Pop. My grandsons had started calling me Grandma Karen, I said no, just call me Regular Gramma. Now they sometimes call me crazy, but that’s ok, too. Karen
Honest, I’m not trying for another chance at the give-away lol, but it just dawned on me, I forgot to say “Congratulations Nana!”
You can decide in advance what you “think” your kiddos will call you but I’m telling you, they have a say in it. My husband and I are called “On the Mountain Grandma or Grandpa” while the other set is “Basketball Grandma” or “Grandpa that Gave Me the Tie.” Having 13 now, I just smile when one calls me “On the Mountain Grandma.” They can call me whatever they want….I love them to death. Congratulations!
I so enjoy your posts, very inspirational, motivating, and heartfelt. I love the names Grandmommy or Sugar. My Nanny did not live near me, so when I was a child, she would send me the sweetest letters but would always decorate the edges of the letter with pictures she knew I would like cut from magazines. I always looked so forward to receiving them. And now, my son looks forward to receiving letters from his Grandmommy and Grandaddy. Congratulations!
Congratulations! You will love being a Grandmother. It is so rewarding and special. My Mimi and I hung clothes out on the clothesline together, had a Tea party, sewed a dress together, fished together ( I had to bait her hook, ha), read books, colored and drew pictures with charcoals, wrote poems and went to church together. We had so many joyful times with one another. I learned a lot from her and even put icing on the cake for her. She made me sweet, frilly dresses and a new Easter dress every year. There is so much more I could share but time and space is limited here. Enjoy your new Grandbaby. I know you will teach this child many wonderful things.
Blessings and sentimental congratulations on anticipating your first grandbaby! Your post is simply the dearest you have ever done!!
As my mom did for us, you can think about gifting your grandbaby/ies with a simple pair of white baby socks, to be turned into a white rose in each of the wedding honeymoon courages someday. If a girl, also a baby headband, to become her garter for her wedding. And, for the Holidays, be they near or far, a tin of your homebaked cookies to become “Grandma Cookies” and enjoyed by that treasured grandchild during Christmas time.
For grandpa & dad, keep on hand a dark men’s tie for each, to “footprint” with that wee one. For grandma & mom, footprinted aprons, of course!! (I am a home ec major)
Ideas from my “Living Genealogy” – inspiring family traditions and strengthening family ties! Sincerest hugs … Dori
Grandma is the sweetest word I know. Whatever the little one calls you and sometimes they decide, it’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve known. Knowing that they are in the good hands of their parents leaves you with none of the responsibility and all the fun.
Enjoy,
Sandy
Congratulations, Aunt Ruthie!!!! I’m a mom to a youngster, but my mom (Mimi) absolutely loves being a Grandmom! We call our grandmom “Mommom” and called my other “Gee” (I came up with that one as a babe.)
All the best to Ashley!
God bless!
Congratulations Aunt Ruthie,You will love being a Grandmother!! I have 8 beautiful Blessings from God. I have 7 grandaughters and one grandson . We had 3 granddaughters born within 10 hours of each other in different states.2 were twins.Boy we were a tired Granmama and Papa. We drove all night to make the births of all babies. What a joy they are. When the children and granchildren come for a visit to our house it is so full of laughter. It’s when my house feels most like HOME.I loved being called Granmama. The smallest one can’t say Granmama so she calls me mama mama. I think that is so cute and just warms my heart.
Aunt Ruthie,
You are in for the most joyous time of your life. I am the grand to four (Brianna 12, Matthew 9, Caleb 6, Chance 8 mo). Those babies are the best of everything life has to offer. The Lord has blessed my life in so many ways but I have to say that my grandchildren complete me. When that little bundle gets here you will not believe the feeling that you have in your heart. There is no other feeling like it, there is no other love like it, I just can’t even describe how wonderful it is. Congrats to you and your entire family, especially your daughter and son-in-heart.
Names:
Mine call me “Maw Maw”
My children called my mom “Gooma ”
My best friends kids call her mom “Honey”
Good Luck !

Hi Ruthie, What wonderful news ! You’ll never forget the day and moment you heard this news,I know I haven’t.
I let our first grandchild choose the name with no input from all of us. I wanted it to be a name she created from her own mind. First she chose Mammy and then very shortly changed it to Memaw. So now I am Memaw to five great young people ! I just felt that whatever name she came up with would be more special than anything I could think of.
Congratulations Ruth Ann! You’re going to be such a great grandmother:) Have you considered being called Mum Mum? It’s my personal fave. I’d like to share a favorite memory of my grandmother, but unfortunately I didn’t know either of them well. How blessed your grandchild will be to know you:)
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m like you waiting for Grandbabies!!
How about Grammy or Grandmama or Grandmommy!
BTW – My birthday is October 7th too! Wow!! :-)
Omygoodness, Ruthie Ann!!!
You are in for the joy of a lifetime – a grandbaby! And how blessed that little one will be with a Grammy like you!!! I became a grandmother for the first time four years ago, Grace, again three years ago, Norah and now another little one is on the way:) My granddaughters call me, “Mammie” ’cause they couldn’t say, “Grammy” and I love my custom made title. So “Mammie” it is!
Blessings, Blessings and more Blessings on your joyful, blissful, awesome news,
Dolley Carlson aka Ruth Ann:)
Dear Aunt Ruthie:
Such good news! I am so happy for everyone involved:) Gee, I think Gramma Ruthie will be the one that sticks, but you know the little one is going to name you:)
My gram was called grandma grape by my kids as she always had seedless grapes as a treat for them. She was a great little lady, gone to heaven last year.
I think the simple…grandma Ruthie…is just adorable! Congratulations to the soon to be parents and grandparents! :)
How about “Gigi”? I wish my mom wanted a cute grandma name, but she only likes “grandma”. Too bad because there are some really cute ones out there! Congratulations to you & your daughter & her hubby!
What wonderful news!! I love the names \Grandmommy\ and Grammy\
I have memories of sitting on my Grandmommy’s lap in her rocking chair when I was only about four years old. Something would always make us laugh hysterically and we would lean in and gently press our foreheads together and smile with our eyes very close to eachother’s. Years later, when I was a teenager and she was in a nursing home showing similar signs to Alzheimer’s…something made us both giggle and we pressed our foreheads together just as we did when I was little. At that moment, I knew she remembered…
I totally just wept when I read this. I’m so excited for you and your daughter. I just got married 4 months ago and my mother-in-law and mom are dieing for grandkids:) I dream about how exciting it will be to tell them one day when we have our first child. P.s. Your daughter and her husband are both gorgeous and so you’re destined for a drop-dead-gorgeous baby!! How exciting!!
I have always liked Gran… I think it’s totally cute. I call one of my grandmothers Memaw and I love it too. The one thing my grandma and I always did together that has stayed with me my whole life and made me feel so incredibly special as a little girl was crochet. She taught me how when I was about 7, and I used to crochet my dolls blankets and we would have so much fun doing it!
Congratulations!!!
Salutations to the whole happy family! Since you are of Italian heritage, your name could reflect that: Nonna!…. or a variation, maybe Nonnie…. just a thought, la tua amica Mary V.
Congratulations on such wonderful news!! Your daughter will be a wonderful mother as she’s had years of training from a blessed woman.
I’m not a grandma yet, but can I still enter my name into your drawing?
One of the most memorable times with my grandma was playing cards with her on the livingroom floor and eating popcorn. She loved to play solitaire and when we played together, we played double solitaire. she would sit right down on the floor in the livingroom with me and we would play game after game while eating warm buttered popcorn. I always enjoyed going over there to spend the night. She taught me to sew and gave me a love for gardening.
I’m so happy for you Ruthie! You must be on cloud 9.
Hugs & blessings to you~ Birgit
Congratulations!
My grandmother was “Grammy” and now my little one calls my mom “Grammy” too. (To distinguish, she calls my mother-in-law Grandma, which is what my hubby called his grandmother.)
I am also expecting, due in January with twins — a boy and a girl. I wish your daughter lots of luck and a healthy, happy pregnancy. I can’t wait to see lots o’ baby posts — how about some down-home country baby decor?
You are SO cheer-y and happy each time I read your blog,I would like to call you , “Grammy Sunshine”…or how ’bout because you are so darn sweet….”Candy Gram”!!! Now what bundle of joy would not want to be visited by a “Candy Gram”???? I am so happy for you and I live for the day, when I to can have the delima of what my Grand babies can call me. SO HAPPY for you!!!
Congrats, Ruthie! I am “Nana” to four beautiful gkids and a fifth is on it’s way! I’ve loved the name Nana since I first read the Peter Pan stories, so that’s what I wanted to be called. Sometimes the little ones call me “Anna” and the older ones call me “Nan”. My best friend is a grandma several times over, and her gkids call her “GaGa”. Anyway, whatever they call you, there is nothing like a little one wrapping their arms around your neck and whispering “I love you Nana” into your ear. Or, having them come running when you open the door calling “Nana”. Gkids are God’s biggest blessing!!
Congratulations!
You’re daughter really is a beautiful young woman. My first daughter is just 2 1/2 and I already feel like her babyhood was gone in a blink. She’s growing up too fast!
First off, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
My step daughter has given us 3 blessings from God so far. They all call me COOKIE. I love it. I really don’t know why it started, but it is the cutest thing evah!!!l…lol Anyway, I smile everytime they talk to me.(“Cookie, you the best! Cookie, me and you are just the same! Cookie, take me swimming!”) So dang cute! One time my grandson asked who Stacey was??? (that’s my first name) and my step daughter told him that it was Cookie. He scrunched up his nose, cocked his head, and said, “She’s not a Tasty…she’s my Cookie!!”
Oh, to be someone’s Cookie is awesome. Who doesn’t love cookies?
Anyway, you’ll love whatever they end up calling you. Prayers going up for a wonderful pregnancy!! This precious little angel babe will be surrounded by such a wonderful family.
Stacey (AKA Cornpone & Co. from the Sugerpie Sistas Forum)
Yay for Grammies!
My nephew chose his own strange name for my mom and it has stuck with the rest of our babies too. They call her “Noanie”. I have no idea why.
My grandma was/is known as simply “Grandmamma”. She taught me so much about life, God, being a woman/wife/mom, housekeeping, etc. She sometimes whispers, “I love you, Jesus” throughout her day and I think it is so sweet of her to communicate with her Lord in such an intimate way.
Congratulations!! I also will be a Grandmama for the 1st time! Baby is due at Easter…a beautiful gift from God. Not sure either what I will be called! My boys called my Mom Nan , (although she was called Grandma Mother at first for a short while) and my MIL is Oma!
Blessings to you and your family!
Well, congratulations. Grandchildren are indeed the best! My grandson is 2 and we are getting another in November. I am Mimi. I think Sissy, Sugar,Sugarpie, or Sassy are cute names. You will think of just the right name, or the baby will make up it’s own. It will be here before you know it. I know you can’t wait.
Sheila
I know it’s common, but I say stick with “Grandma”. I don’t think there is anything sweeter than my children calling “gamma”….as it comes out at first.
My daughter, who is 4, can say it correctly and it is still the sweetest thing. My son who just turned 1 this summer is saying it his own way. He calls her Mamma. I’m not sure if their pronoounciations will come across in writing, but there you have it. The best part of it is when you become a great grandma, you can do what we do. We call our great grandma “GG”.
Whatever you choose you’ll be blessed every time you hear it. Congratulations and many blessings.
Jessica
Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your first grandchild, Ruthann! I am so excited for your family.
Whenever I’m a grandma I’d love to be called Mimi. Now my own sweet grandma was called “Gram”. We spent a lot of time together playing games, watching her bake pies, and helping her cut out quilt patches…I have so many wonderful memories of my dear Gram and I know you’ll make plenty of special memories with your own dear grandchild.
God bless!
Love, Kim
Congratulations to you and your beautiful daughter and handsome son-in-law. This is going to be such a wonderful journey for you, and your grandkids will be so lucky to have someone as sweet and loving as you as their Grandmother.
A cute Grandma name for you would be “Grandma Ruthie.”
A wonderful memory of my Great-Grandmother is the smell of her home and the wonderful things that filled her home. She was always baking something wonderful. She was such a sweet woman and did everything to make us feel like we were the most special people in the world, no matter what we did. We all still miss her to this day!
Good luck, and I know you will be the best ever!
Congratulations to you and your family! I am also going to be a first time grandma. Our little angel is due in May. I am sooooooo excited for my son and his beautiful wife, as we watch them blossom into parenthood. I am hoping that my grandchild will call me “Mia”. I loved the movie “Mamma Mia”, and I thought shortening it to Mia would be easy for a little one to say, and of course I am not the “mamma”, but whatever that precious little one wants to call me would be fine! A friend of mine called her grandparents Goose & Grumps – thought that was so funny and it fit them perfectly. Wishing you many blessings ahead!
Ruthann,
I am so happy for you, it is wonderful to be a grandmother. I also longed for years to be a grandma, so I understand your feelings. I have been praying for you that God would bless you with grandchildren in His time.
I lived a long distance from both of my grandmothers, so never knew them very well, I admired them, but did not have a close relationship, it was a longing in my heart. It was important to my hubby and I to have our own three children know their grandparents. And now I am only an hour and a half away from my five grandchildren, so I am close enough to spend time with them.
I think the most wonderful thing a grandmother can do is to pray for her grandchildren, I am wondering if over the years my grandmothers prayed for me, even though we were separated by great distances.
God bless you and your family. Thank you for holding up home and motherhood, we need women that are proud to be called wife and mother, and not have to make excuses for being ‘only a homemaker’.
Carolyn
Hi Ruthie, I havn’t really commented before but I just absolutly love love your blog! I wanted to say congradulation’s to you and your daughter and son and law and whole family! How exciting! I do know they do grow so fast. I have three girls ages 6,8,10. They call my mom grandma and my mother in law nana. I loved spending time with my grandmother and have so many wonderful memories I can’t even count them all. My sister and I used to spend night’s at her house alot which we loved. She used to get on the floor and color or play with us, and she would let us use fancy clothes and shoes and hat’s that she didn’t use anymore for dress up, which we did alot. Enjoy your new grandbaby, you will make an excellent loving grandmother! Erica ericaharrick@sbcglobal.net
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! What a sweet grandma you’ll be!!! I so look forward to that day. Well, I used to call my grandmas \vavo\, but that’s Portuguese and you won’t need that name. They were so sweet to us kids. My favorite memory is probably her taking us to the fair. God bless you!
My mom was just as excited as you when she became a grandma for the first time 4 years ago. Now in March she will be a grandma again and couldn’t be more excited! She goes by, “G.G.” and we just love it! :) Congrats Aunt Ruthie!!
Wow! That’s exciting news! Sophia Loren used to use the name
Mamina. She’s Italian like us. :-)
Congrats!! Oh what wonderful news. There is nothing, nothing in the world more precious that being a Mimi which is what my two little sweetheart grandchildren call me. Just hearing them say “Mimi” makes my heart melt each and everytime I hear it. Children and grandbabies are truly a gift from God and how blessed we are!!
Hope you have a great day,
Karen in Texas
There are a lot of good suggestions. I have 14 grandchildren now and go by GRANDMA. Plain old Grandma and I love it. Sometimes I jokingly call myself “GRANNY” to the older ones and they know I am teasing about my name. Grandma is a blessed title that anyone should love. An honor and a privilege! I became a G-ma at age 41, so I was not “Granny” material yet, but who cares. Take each day as it comes and enjoy it. And, YES, your little Bebe will call you whatever will come out of their precious little mouth and you will LOVE it!
Betty in Oklahoma aka Grandma G or G-ma G
I just knew I would have two girls and have tea parties, etc. I had two wonderful boys. My husband always said I would be the “queen of the house.” So, the grandbabies – someday will call me “queeniep” or “nene-p” I cant wait!
My grandlma always taught me to be happy with whatever the Lord blesses you with. There will always be people with much less and much more.
I love your beautiful site! Congratulations to you all! We have
a sweet little granddaughter who we adore….. Your site is always uplifting and joyful and the recipes are great! Sooo happy for you all in this new adventure. -lv nancy m.
I hope my first comment came through……..I was having trouble posting. But I love your blog; recipes and say congratulations on this sweet blessing for you all. lv-nancy
Congradulations….I have to say there is nothing better than being a Grandma. I have 6 with the 7th on the way here way in Nov. We are so excited its our first girll! I’m sure whatever your new grandchild calls you it will be special…they have a way of touching your heart like no other.
Dear Ruthie,
My congratulations…….I became a “Grammie” for the first time two years ago when “we” adopted our precious Jack, after years of my daughter Alisons infertility and miscarriages. Then six months ago our adorable Drew decided to “SURPRISE” us all with his arrival via his mommy. I love being called Grammie….it is lovey, and soft and squishy….just like the grandmother I want to be. My husband is “papa” and together we are so in love with these beautiful boy blessings….You are in for the biggest, best treat in the world!
Oh Aunt Ruthie- Or Should I say “Grammy Ruthie” -I am pleased as punch for you!!!! And what a young -spirited little grandma you’ll be-whisking that lil granbaby off to here there and everywhere!!!
Blessings and Love for your whole family! What a beautiful Autumn Suprise! Thank you for sharing your great news with us!
Hugs,
Colleen
I love, love, love being called GRAMMY….. the reason is it reminds me of gram crackers- something to nuture you and fill you with sweetness- corney but true….and I love, love, love hearing it every time and Ruth I love hearing from you-congradulations (please change your music…it makes me cry too ;] )
My grandkids call me “Nonni”. I’m Italian, like you, and that is Italian for Gramma….it’s an adorable name and so easy for the little ones to pronounce, so far! Doesn’t it sound cute?! I think so! Love your blog…wish you’d post more often…K
My kids call my mother in law, Grandy. We love it. It is unique and so cute when they say it. Congrats Aunt Ruthie; or whatever your new name is?
Oh, you are in for such a wonderful time. I just got my little gift from God 7 months ago, a beautiful little girl, Elsa. Elsa means “consecrated to God”. Like you, I have wanted to slow down how fast they were growing up and going out the door. But, they’re still close to me and we are all overjoyed with our new family member. I love my own children so much, I could not even imagine how much I love her. Now she is here and she just gives us such love and joy. So, when the time came to pick the grandmother name, I picked Mimi because my grandmother was Meme. I was the oldest grandchild in our family and somehow came up with Meme and everyone called her that the rest of her live. I have a friend who picked Nan as her grandmother name, not Nana or Nannie, but Nan. I also think that’s a nice name, too. Anyway, I don’t have to tell you to treasure every moment because I know you will because of the kind of person you are. My prayers are with Ashley and your whole family during this time of anticipation. Mimi
Congrats!!…So whatcha think about these names?
Nifty Nana
Or
Groovy Granny??
Just joking Honey…Ya know it really doesn’t matter what that sweet little bundle calls you. Just being able to snuggle and love on that little one will be the best gift ever. My Granny has always been there for me and I love her to death. She has taught me how to cook, sew, garden and most of all how to be a respectable person. She is my best friend!!
Ohhhhh!! Congratulations and blessings! I’m sure the little one will make up his/her own name for you all in good time.
My Grandma:
I spent weekends with my grandma and grandad every two weeks until I was in high school. She taught students accordian lessons and Grandad told me stories of his life during the Great Depression (yes, he really did, but he made it sound like a great adventure!). Grandma taught me manners. How to chew with my mouth closed, make my bed, work in the garden, cook, and make a pattern to sew a dress. On Sunday mornings before church Grandma made doughnuts. My job was to shake them in sugar and put them by the dozen into paper bags. Grandad placed them in a little red wagon and he and I sold them to the neighbors for a dollar a bag. On one trip Grandad and I found a little mouse, put it into a bag and didn’t tell grandma because she didn’t like mice. When we got home Grandma had the kitchen all cleaned up and was in her bedroom dressing for church so I placed the mouse-bag on a kitchen chair and went to get myself dressed. Grandma was holding the bag and crying when I came back into the kitchen. She had accidentally sat on it and smashed the mouse. I knew she hated mice! But rather than get mad, she was so sorry for killing my mouse! This is the same Grandma who still climbed the plum tree in her 90’s, hid the bananas in the laundry hamper so Grandad wouldn’t eat them all, used tissues when she ran out of coffee filters (Grandad couldn’t figure out why his coffee smelled like perfume), and spent a half hour ironing my blouse when I was overwhelmed with three little kids and sick with the flue. She was stern and in charge, and I miss her so much!
Congratulations!!!!!!!! Woohoo! Wonderful news :~)
I called my grandmother “Gram”. I sure miss her!
Will keep your daughter and baby in prayer, not forgetting daddy also.
Blessings,
Kath
Congrats on being a grandma. Love your blog. Lena
Congratulations Aunt Ruthie!!! You are going to make a fabulous grandmother! I am so happy for Ashley and her husband!
Congratulations…what wonderful news!
LOVE your website…..it’s the warmest, coziest place on the entire internet! Such a refuge.
Blessings to you and yours…..especially the teeny one!
Lori
When my mom got pregnant with me, my grandma on my dad’s side said she didn’t want to be called grandma because she didn’t feel old enough to be one. Needless to say, the first time she saw me she said “She can call me anything she wants! ” ;) I ended up calling her tutu which is Hawaiian for grandma for a long time until I could talk better. Both of my grandmas were soo important in my life. They would always have cookies ( I now have grandma’s famous cookie jar) and ice cream sandwiches and I knew they would drop everything if we came over. My life would not be the same without them in it. When my daughter was born she called my mom gobka, that’s how “grandma” came out! Congratulations on this most wonderful blessing!

Congratulations!! While I am not ready yet, I can not wait for the day that I will someday be a grandma.
In my husbands family they always called their grandma (Nammy). Not sure how that got started. But she has always been Nammy to me.
There is quite a large Franco-American population In the central & northern portion of the State of Maine. Therefore, many grandmothers are called Meme’ or Memere…
As to memories of my grammie, I remember that everything about her – from the way she cooked, to the smells in her home, to the way she applied lipstick & her smile meant just for me – were precious memories because I knew that I was the apple of her eye…
Ruthie, you already have a picture of the kind of meme’ you want to be, sharing tenderness, love & a personal relationship with Jesus w/ this new little one — the rest will be icing on the cake! :-)
Congratulations! I think just plain ol’ “Grandma” is the way to go, personally…as for traditions, my Grandma Sawyer always read us “The Honey Hunt,” a Berenstein Bears book when we stayed over at her house. Since my wedding was coming up, she gave me my very own copy last Christmas (the original was unfortunately lost in a move); my next-oldest cousin freaked out when she saw that that’s what I got…so for her birthday, she got a copy!
It’s so special that after all those years of being read that book, I can read it for my kids one day.
In short, special books for Grandma-and-baby are very important! :D
I’m a grandma 9 times and I enjoy the kiddos calling me grandma. My grandma was very special to me and lived with us for a while. She always had time for me and treated me special…good memories!
I’m an Omi!
Our oldest and youngest children, both daughters, were students of German while in high school. Tragically our youngest child passed away during her freshman year of high school. She had always wanted to take German and it was one class I knew she whould always be a part of. I work in the same school and I would often stop by for a visit with what would have been her class.
One day, just after learning we were to be grandparents, I stopped in on one of the other German classes. The teacher who had taught both of our daughters was quite excited for our family and began to explain to her students, in German, that my daughter was going to have a baby. I do not speak German, but could understand enough to hear something that amounted to “kinder of my kinder” or roughly, “child of my child” she was rattling on when I heard “Oma.” I got goose bumps and exclaimed, “I’m going to be an Omi!” which, if I understand correctly is sort of German for Granny. I went that moment and emailed my daughter, who also teaches in the school district to tell her I had picked my grandmother name. I have been Omi ever since.
There is simply nothing better than a grandchild.
Congrats on becoming a grandmother for the first time and good luck to your daughter throughout her pregnancy. I love your blog. It is everything I hope mine will be someday.
Someday, when I have the blessing of becoming a grandma, I think I want to be called “Gram”—just the simple one syllable title, but full of so much love to give. Oh, I can’t wait for the day when I can use that name!!
Congratulations and enjoy picking out that special name, whether it be this one or another one.
My sister-in-law became a grandma for the first time this year, and she calls herself Lolly, so her sweet lil’ Lauren has her beloved “Lolly ‘n Pops.” I love it! We have a little teddy bear pup who we named Mollie, but now I call her Lolly all the time because it just sounds so cute!
Hi Aunt Ruthie,
When I become a grandmother some day, I hope my grand kiddies will call me “Oma”. My grandmother, whom I never met, was called Oma, and my mother goes by Oma. I never met any of my grand parents because they all lived in Holland. Sadly, I don’t have any Oma and Opa memories. However, that will change in my generation. I plan on making a special quilt for each one of my grand children as a memory for them to keep. I would also like to teach each of my grand daughters how to sew/quilt and anything else they want to learn.
Congratulations!
Christa
Oh my, a Grandma! Lucky lady you are and Ashley and Glen are adorable so you will have the most beautiful baby added to your family! I wish you all the best and will pray for Ashley to have a healthy baby! That is what really matters. My grandmothers were very special to me and both taught me something different to take into my adult life. One was a homemaker who could sew beautiful clothes for me and bake the best cookies and homemade bread!!! The other was a business woman who owned her own restaurant and taught me to drive; to work hard; and to always be friendly and chat with others we meet. Most importantly – both taught me to worship the Lord and took me to church with them. I won’t forget the life lessons they taught and loved spending time with them. You will make a great grandma – and will always add fun to their life too. pj
Congratulations! Have to laugh, our Grandson Finn 7 years calls me Mary Anne! How about “sugar pie” or ” Rootie”, what ever he or she calls you, she may come up with the magic name!!!
I imagine the baby will name you! My youngest niece called my mom “oma” “Old ma” one day when she wanted her mother’s attention and my sister was talking to us. The baby toddled over to my mom, tugged on her skirt, and said “Oma,…jabbber, jabber”-pointing to my sister. We all figured she knew Grandma could make mom listen to her! Oma stuck! It is also German for Grandma (appropriate for my mom as they were moving to Germany at the time)! Congratulations! I remember snapping beans under the tree in the backyard with my little bitty great grandmother. (She still wore the long skirt, apron, and sunbonnet!)
I am long distance Grannie to one 2 year old with another sweet grandbaby due in March. Starting in the third month of pregnancy, each month on the “due date”, I would send a small gift and a silly, silly poem. In the 8th month, I gave my daughter the items that I had saved for her from her baby and toddler years. Along with these items, I gave her a notebook/scrapbook that had pictures of her wearing the item that I had given her or playing with it. I also wrote little segments about the outfits, toys, events and included poems. I’m not very crafty but it was a labor of love and she (and everyone that sees it) is touched by the sweet memories preserved through the years.
Oh! That is the best! Grand-babies are our reward for surviving our kids teen years. When I became a grandma my mom already laid claim to that name, so I became Grammy. I have heard a young girl (12 years old) say, “I wish I could call my grandma just Grandma.” She went by some quirky name which I don’t recall now, so there is nothing wrong with the good ‘ol standby name.
My grandma was always laughing and spoiled us rotten. If we wanted ice cream and popcorn for breakfast that was what we had. A little spoiling never hurt any child.
I will have to give you the name my grandchildren called me as my grandmother was not the sweet and loving one I could have wished for. Jacob and Ellie called me g-mom. I love them and wish that they had not moved so far away. I live in Ohio and my son-in-law got a wonderful job in Louisiana and they moved about 2 and a half years ago. Jacob is nine and Ellie is 6. We do get them for about 6 weeks each summer but that is just not the same.
Enjoy them and love them and raise them in the joy of the Lord and it will be great.
Oh, I have the perfect name..I have always said when I have Granbabies..they are gonna call me Sugar!!! yes sugar…that fits you perfectly!!! I kid my hubby and tell him their gonna call him Grumpy..not Grampy!!!!ha,ha,ha…..Congratulations I cant wait for that day….My oldest just graduated..and my youngest turns 7 on October 9..the day after my 40th!!!! I loved my Granny…..we spent every weekend with her…she Cooked us peach cobbler…gave us her last dollar to by treats…Miss Nellie Odell was a wonderful Granny. And I know you will be to Miss Ruthie.
Many Blessing’s
Ann
I am called Nonie…My daughter couldn’t decide what my name should be. My Mom is Grammy already and there is already a Nan. The time for my darling to be born was drawing near….I said “Hurry up and name me–the baby will be calling me “Granny No Name”. So she said “How about Nonie–sounds like No Name” So that is how I got my name!–I love it!–but I also would have love to be called “Sugah” My grandson, who is 4 says “Nonie, you need some of my sugah don’t you?… when he wants to cuddle.
Congratulations on your wonderful news!
Carolyn
OOOH! What excitement! My first grandbaby is 18 months old. We welcomed two more this summer and I can tell you that no one can tell you how WONDERFUL it is to be a grammy! Now, what to be called…hmmm…I gave this a lot of thought probably because my mother in law made such a stink when I gave birth to her first grandchild 30 years ago. She told me that she will never be a “Grandmaw” but only wants to be called “Grandmother.” And so it was, and so it is. The relationships she developed with my children were just as formal, never fun and certainly not close. Not me, I want those grandbabies to call me whatever they want- as long as they call me. And oh the fun we will have! For now, my 18 month old calls me “GA” and I come running with arms wide open! She may call me whatever she likes but I refer to myself as Grammy. And I love it! You will love whatever name you choose!!! (and so will that baby!)
Congratulations Aunt Ruthie! Babies are a blessing straight from heaven – no doubt about it!
Our children love their Grammy to distraction – and she always says it’s the only Grammy Award she’ll ever need – to be loved by our kiddos!
Oh, Congratulations that is wonderful news. All the best for your daughter and son-in-law. My husband and I are expecting our first child and I am guessing it must be due around the same time as your daughter’s child as we had the 12 week scan earlier this week. All is well – thank God. I once read that having a baby is one of the only times we got to play an active part in one of God’s miracles and having seen our little being I now know that is true.
As for names – my paternal grandmother is Nanna. Unfortunately I never knew my maternal grandmother as she died very young but my Mum’s step-mum has always been Grandma. My mother herself is rooting for Gran at this stage, but Nan is also a common variation here in Australia.
I found it hard to pick just one experience to write about – I spent a lot of time with my paternal grandparents as a child (my maternal grandparents unfortunately living on the otherside of the country). I was my Nanna’s only grandchild and spoilt rotten because of it. My Nanna and Granddad used to pick me up from half-day Kindergarten and we would go for picnics – often to the zoo which was down the road from their house – I was a fussy eater and ‘scenery’ provided a distraction from the food battles. When it was too wet to picnic outside we would either take the car to the park and picnic inside it, or Nanna would set up the picnic rug on the floor of the backroom and we would eat there. Those are pretty special memories. In fact, my Nanna has just moved into a nursing home and one of the items I salvaged from the house is the old blue and white picnic set!
Oh my heavens Ruthann! CONGRATULAIONS! This is so exciting and being a Grandmother will change your life FOREVER! I promise! We are expecting our 12th grandbaby in Spring and it feels like the first time all over again! I am so h a p p y for you sweetheart and what a beautiful baby she/he with be…just look at how beautiful Ashley and Glen are!
Humm, a name. At first our grandchildren called me MeMaw and Don Pepa, but the older they got it became Grandma. So now it is Grandma! I LOVE that word coming out of their sweet mouths! I had a Grandma and a Grammie! No matter what you decide to be called, is it a gift from heaven! How blessed we are to be women!
Love ya,
Maryjane

I am so happy for you. GUESS WHAT? I am going to be a first time grandmother also…next April. It is so funny that the things you wrote were almost exactly what I wrote on my FACEBOOK page to announce our news. I couldn’t be more thrilled. I put out a contest among my friends also… a sort of “name the Grandma'” contest. So far it is between “Nana, GiGi, or JoJo.” A cousin who works for a dentist says one of her patients calls his grandma “Honey” which I think is adorable too.My children call my mother “Nanny”, which they pronounce “Naynee” Whatever you are called, you will make a great one. I love your blog. All the best to your daughter and s.i.l. Babies are a blessing from God!
Ruth, I’m so happy for you and your family! I’m so looking forward to the day I become a grandma and I’ve thought about what I’d like to be called, but can’t come up with just the right name! I’m hoping my grandchild someday will find just the right one for me. My mom started out as Grandma to my kids, then it became Granny. But my youngest couldn’t say Granny so it became Nanny. Now that he’s grown, he calls her Nana. Whatever your precious grandbaby calls you will be just right! Congratulations!!
Congrats! I am really excited for you! My grandkids call me “Nana” and I refer to them as little angels. And I have enjoyed them so much. I sugar them up and send them home! Its wonderful. Congrats again!
Oh Aunt Ruthie, what wonderful news! What a blessing! That baby is so lucky that he or she is going to have a grandma like you! Wow! Plus such nice and good looking parents!
I had such a fantastic grandma! She was so smart and GENEROUS! She used to take me out for banana cream pie every time I visited at her favorite restaurant that had a bakery in it. We lived in different states but she called every week and wrote letters (no e-mail back then!) She had beautiful handwriting! She always made sure I had new shoes for school. She had been raised during the Depression and never had properly fitting shoes. She always stressed good fitting shoes! She spoiled me to death. And started collections! She is the reason I love to collect and cutsie up my house. She found delight in the sweetest trinkets. She was the greatest.
I called her Grandma Green – because her last name was Green! That name was perfect for her. I think I like “Grandma” the best. How about “Grandma Ruthie”?
I will keep your family in my prayers and especially your daughter Ashley – that her pregnancy will be healthy and special. What a magical time. Thank you, God, for this wonderful news. God Bless You all!
Sincerely,
Ann
Congratulations! Being a grandma is the best! I didn’t know I could love them so much. The time with them is so special I can’t begin to expain how awesome it is. I can’t wait for you to experience it. I am mama to 7 yr old Hailey (nickname Sugar), 4 yr old (in two weeks) Jayda (nickname Honey), 1 1/2 yr old Jorge (nickname Stinky) and 2 month old Isabel (no nickname yet). The nicknames are one of our special things. Hailey likes to dress up and do fashion shows, Jayda loves to cook and Jorge just likes anything with wheels right now. I let them make messes and worrry about cleaning up later…not like when mine were little. I guess I know now how fast the years go by and just want tosavor every moment with them. Have awesome dreams about your new grandbaby!
Congrats on the news!!! Nothing like being a grandparent. My grandson calls me “mom-mom”, and I love to hear him say it!! I don’t have a blog, but I do receive your emails.
Hi Sweet friend,
I love this sight and just found out about it a few months ago. I love to collect cookbooks, I love country living ( i am in the mountains of North Carolina) and I love the Lord. So who would ever dream I could have your site to visit and hear all about these wonderful things. I love your spirit and joy for life. Each day is such a gift!!
Oh my!! You are going to be a grandmother. My time will hopefully come in a few years. My boys are 19 and 21 and both in school. They are good , Christian boys and I know will be wonderful fathers some day.
A dear friend of mine is a grandmother and tells me all the time that as much as I love being a Mother that I am going to just love being a grandmother. Her precious granddaughter calls her “Grammy”!!! It is so precious to hear her say it. Thought i would suggest it to you.
God bless you and keep us informed. What wonderful news!!!!!
Pam
OH How Wonderful!!!!
I know and love the feeling!!!
My little sweet bundle starting calling me the Ba-Ba and to me it is the most wonderful name I have ever had!!!! As the years have gone by (3 to count) I am now Grannie, what a wonderful and equally thrilling name…
I am so happy for you, by heart is singing with your!!!
Lots of Hugs and All My Best!!!
Just A Gal…
Well congrats to you! Nothing better than a new baby to love! I have nine grandchildren. Had some older ones, and now we got four little ones – so I call them “the littles”. All my grandkids call me Nana, but now my Jack who just turned two started calling me granny Frannie (my name is Francine), so I think that’s kind of cute. Ever since my grandkids were little they have helped me make cut out sugar cookies. When they were very little – they just did the sprinkles, and when they got a bit older they would frost and sprinkle, and now some cut them out and bake them. One of the kids calls me grandma sugar cookie!!! I have a couple special aprons for them, and they always have to have their apron on when they help make cookies. We make them for every holiday, and it seems I always have a helper, and now some of “the littles” are old enough to do the sprinkles. I know you will enjoy that little one, and I have always felt you are closer to your daughter’s child than your sons! Blessings!
Hey Mom, Thanks for the Blog dedication :) your going to be a wonderful Grandma no matter what you will be called..although you know the name i already have picked out for you. but we can keep that between us ;) Love you lots and lots!
“Grandma Ruth” is the name of my own angel, my father’s mother, Ruth, who passed before I was born.
In my mind she is the perfect grandmother, sending love and encouragement from Heaven, if not on earth. As my aunts love to say, if she had been here, “she would have loved the socks off you”! Still, love transcends even death and I’ve always felt her presence around me and in what she left behind.
Recently, I had the pleasure of finding some old treasured notes Grandma Ruth left for her children, explaining in exquisite detail all of our Slavic Christmas traditions- from the placement of the Christmas creche, to the ceremony with blessed oblatky wafers, to the recipe for Pashka bread (including the exact brand of yeast that simply had to be used to make this the sweetest, most delicious bread in the world). Her loving care was present in every word, and I took great joy last year in trying to make our Christmas table and traditions mirror her thoughtful plans.
Therefore, I can think of no more beautiful a name than simply “Grandma Ruth”. It’s what all her grandchildren call her, despite never knowing her, and it is always spoken with reverence and love. I just know you would wear it well!
Congratulations!!!!!!! What wonderful news – there is nothing, nothing, nothing sweeter than a new baby. Sending many prayers your way for the entire family. I think any of those names are great “grandma” names. Try them out loud and see which one “feels” right! :) Congratulations!!!!!!!!
How Exciting!!!! What a blessing being a grandma will be. I can’t wait myself, except for the fact that I have a 15 yr old and one in college w/o a boyfriend at the moment let alone a husband! But I’ve been stocking up on babyclothes for years and already have 4 quilts made!!!! I’m anxious to see what amazing blogs will be forthcoming!!
My cousins, siblings and I all called my grandma “Grammy”. I started with Mimi, which she says she loved, but switched somewhere along the line!
She was, and still is at 88, a living doll! She “showed” me about Jesus and took me to church with her when I stayed with her. I loved being able to get my tithe out of “God’s jar”, a little jar that she put her loose change in just for me.
Grammy taught me to use my imagination by providing a hose, a table, old dishes and dirt. She showed me how to make mud pies and how to decorate them with grass and flowers and always made such a fuss over how pretty they were!
She also had a closet full of dress-up clothes, many of them hers from when she was in High school-old prom dresses, stoles, and high heels. Each of us girls had our own purses filled with goodies: money (magazines, cut into bills with pinking shears), coins ( the plastic tabs from bread) and our own lipsticks (avon samples). My cousins lived just down the street from my Gram and we would play for hours and days on end!!
As we got older she would tell us stories of her youth and how much she liked going “necking”!!! this from my pure little grandmother!!! She told me and my cousins where all the good spots were!!
She made us pioneer dresses and princess costumes and always gave us homemade gifts, many of which I still have! My brother however, was not always pleased with his, especially the year she knit him a vest!!! Not cool in H.S.!!!!
I pray that your grand baby will have wonderful memories of times spent with you, will always see Jesus in your eyes and be blessed with great health and abundant love!
Blessings, Holly
Congratulations! How about Mama Ruthie? I just love the “Aunt Ruthie” logo, so I vote to keep “Ruthie” in the grandmother name.
Hearing you speak of yummy smells brings fond memories of my grandmother, who always smelled so sweet and was such a lady!
Thanks for the wonderful website. Maybe one day I’ll have the courage to start one. Yours certainly encourages me.
Connie (my grandmother name is CC)
Congratulations to you and your daughter too! How wonderful is a new baby?!! I myself became a first time grammie this past April, a sweet baby girl, Madison, and I’ve been over-the-moon since she graced us with her presence! It’s just the BEST! Suzie
Congratulations! What wonderful news .My three are still small but I dream of that day.Don’t you just love to sit & smell babies! In our family we have many grandmother names. They are not traditional. We have a Noni & a Baba but the name I love is what I call my sweet Molasses Taffy little girl. Her nick name is Tutu. It is Hawaiian for Grandma. I just love it. Sometimes we call her Toot. It just suits a girl who loves to twirl & sparkle.I believe it would suit you to!
I just love your blog. You are such an inspiration and you and your home are just beautiful.
Thank you,
Karol
Congratulations on the Fabulous news! What a lucky baby to be in a beautiful family! I cant wait to see your blog with all the baby cuteness besides all the cuteness now! Hugs Grace
Congrats to all of you … so exciting! I don’t have any suggestions for names for you, since I think everyone has already covered that LOL! But I will share one of my favorite memories of my maternal grandma. Sounds silly, but she used to tell me that the angels must have surely loved me since I had so many angel kisses (freckles) …
One of the wonders of being a grandmother is that your grand-baby WILL name you! I have 3 grandchildren and wanted to be called Grammie-Jo but THAT didn’t happen! They all call me Mamaw! I was a Mamaw at 39!!! I do not have any memories of my grandmothers-they were both gone before I was born, My own mother did not know the joy of being a grandmother as she passed away when I was 17. Enjoy your grandbaby every day if you can! She will be grown before you know it! WOW, I said “she”! Could that be a premonition???!!! My grandchildren are 14, 12 and 5!
How about GiGi…pronounced GeeGee. Of course, I called my grandma Bigmama, because my mom was the little mama and my grandma was the Bigmama, she was the sweetest, most Godly woman I have ever known.
Congrats, Ruthie!
Aww Ruthie! A sweet little baby! So soft & sweet smelling! Ahh! I just want to hold a tiny little one in a cuddly homemade little blankie! All snuggly!!! SO SWEET FOR YOU!! What exciting news!! I’m so happy for all of your family! When my oldest son Nick, (the oldest of 6 grandchildren) was learning to talk he would try his hardest to call my mother Grandma, but it would always sound like Amma..like Ah ma..lol! It has stuck every since. Now all of the grandkids call her Amma. Everyone of our friends, relatives, school teachers etc call her Amma too! She just eats it up! Grandma just wont do for her! Of course a cutesy name is sweet, but Grandma is just as wonderful too! I do have friends that call their grandmothers Nana or Nonni! Nick is 18 now & still call her Amma! My mom & took the kids to the pool this summer & met 4 grandmothers there that were being called 4 different sweet Grandma names! LOL! I had to tell them my mother was an AMMA! Somehow I see you as a Nana or Nonni? By the way all of the kids call my dad Papa. The boys in the family have begun calling him Gramps because they think Papa sounds babyish! :-)
Thanks for sharing the sweet news! Maybe your new little angel will end up deciding the name for you!? Congrats again & God Bless! xo~
Dear Ruthie,
Congrats, you will love being a grandmama. My husband and I have 3 grown children. We kind of had our family like yours. We had our first 2 and they are only 2 years a part and then surprise we were pg and had our 3rd when the first 2 were 10 and 8. We have 5 grandchildren and our baby girl (she is 27) is pg with her first and our 6th grandchild Our youngest grandchild is 4, so it has been a while since we have had a baby and we are so ready.
Our daughter has had the swine flu and she is in her 16th week, so we have been praying so for the baby and her safety. All is well and we feel the worst is over. God is so good!!! I love your site, and I love your kitchen. I don’t have a blog but love reading all about you and your family. Blessings to you and your family and congrats again on the upcoming birth of your grand baby. You will love it!!!!!!
P.S.
My children gave their “Amma” 2 cute little refrigerator magnets that say…”Angels can’t be everywhere & that’s why Godt made Grandmother’s…and then another one that says…Grandma’s are antique little girls! Sweet! ~
congratulations! what an honor from the Lord :) how about grandma-nana? we used to go to my grandma rita’s house (dad’s mom) on new years day and she always decorated in rich blues and silver. it was so beautiful. and now i decorate in blues and silver and snow men. i will keep your daughter and husband in my prayers. i am so exited for everyone. what a sweet and thoughtful giveaway. thank you
blessings,
aimee
I love your blog!
Congratulations on your upcoming grandbaby!
How about LOLLI for Grandma and POP for Grandpa?
I do not blog

What a sweet post…you sound like you are going to be a FABULOUS Grandma!! Your daughter and hubby are so blessed to have such an encouraging Mom and Mom-in-Love.
The name I would offer is “Mamma”…that’s pronounced similar to Grandma…our kids were unable to say Grandma and that came out…it was SOOO sweet!
Blessings,
Camille
congratulations! How exciting for you and Ashley and her hubby too!
I always called my grandma grandma and shortened it to “grams”
She was so awesome. She raised me 1/2 my life. Every morning I knew that no matter how big I was I could sit on her lap and she would love on me. It was very comforting and I knew I was loved!
However, when I moved to the south I found it the sweetest thing for all these little ones to be calling their grandma Ma-maw and I decided if I ever had any children they would call their grandma’s ma-maw. I have 4 children and they do just that. Another southern thing is that all the children said yes sir and no sir, yes mam and no mam.. I wanted that for my children too and they do it too. It is so sweet and it brightens so many faces.. people are constantly commenting on how polite our children are. I just praise the Lord… for the south! Bless you and I will pray for Ashley.
Congratulations on your wonderful news! I can without a doubt tell you that being a Grandma is the most amazing and joyous blessing. My baby girl (and yes they grow up too fast) gave birth to a 5lb. 13 oz. boy on Feb. 22 of this year. From the very second I saw his little face at the ultrasound, I was in love with him…but the night he was born and I was able to finally hold him, I was so overwhelmed with a love so strong it is hard to put into words…you will find out and experience this too. I am absolutely the most obnoxious grandma out there! I always said I would not have a zillion pictures of my grandchildren or whip out these pictures at the drop of a hat to show people..but yes ma’am I do!!
One of the most beautiful names in the world to be called is Grandma and I am so happy that you will join our ranks.
Congratulations! I am so happy for you and know you will be showering your daughter with love the next few months.
We use MeMe and Gammy in our family, Gammy was actually going to be Grandmama but we found it difficult to say. My Grandma is 95 and when I was little she would give me mason jars full of pennies every time I saw her. It was so special to me. Another thing she does is send 5 crisp one dollar bills to every grandchild, great grandchild and now great-great grandchild on their birthdays. We all look forward to that card coming every year, how she keeps up with all those birthdays I’ll never know. Some of my most special memories of my grandparents are the long drive from Texas to Colorado to visit them and knowing we were there by the smell of the pine trees lining her sidewalk, her homemade tapioca pudding, and having a big glass of Welch’s grape juice for breakfast (my mom always cut it with half water but Grandma let me drink it full strength:)
Grandparents hold a special place in all our hearts and I know you will have a ball creating special memories for your little ones.
Congratulations Ruthie!!!! What wonderful news! My oldest daughter and I were just having this conversation not too long ago about what I want my grandchildren to call me—I’m thinking Grammy or MeMaw—she says I can choose, but her dad gets no choice in the matter—it’s “Bumpa” hands down (much to his chagrin)!!! As a child, I lived so far from my grandparents, so every visit was special. I remember that my “Gramma Theil” had really long fingernails and I would lie across her lap and she would scratch a large letter on my back until I figured out which letter it was—-the letters would gradually create words or phrases like “I- L-O-V-E -Y-O-U!” I always hated leaving her because I knew how sad she was to see us go! I remember watching her out the back of my folks’ station wagon, crying as we drove away. I wish my children could have known her. You are going to be such a fabulous grandparent—-I can just tell you’ll be the type of grandmother that will make wonderful memories!
Congratulations to Ashley and Glen, and to you! We’re expecting our second, and it’s such a joy.
When my first was just a few months old we went for a little outing to do some errands and while we were waiting for something at one of the offices we were at my little guy dropped his pacifier. There was the sweetest little Grandma sitting next to me and she said “Oh sweetie, your little one lost his husher…” Husher…I had never heard that before and from that time on we called the pacifier a husher. I thought it was so sweet. I know it’s not a cute name for a Grandma but the sweetest little Grandma gave us that word.
Congratulation Aunt Ruthie, Ashley, Glen and Family!!!
May God Bless your family richly during this very special time. Cherish EVERY MOMENT because it flies…….
I’m half Cuban so I have an “Abuela” which is soooo very special in culture. I also have an English Grandma whom my children call “Grandy” which is sweet as pie to hear from the mouths of my kiddos. Honestly Ruthie, I could envision you as a”Mi-mi”, it’s a southern term of endearment for a Grandma with cherry on top!!
My Grandma always baked with me and when I was around seven she taught me to make an apron with all sorts of beautiful detail and ric-rac edges that my daughter now cherishes and wears when we bake together.
OH Happy Day!
Enjoy!!
Hi Ruth Ann,
Congratulations!! What wonderful news for your family! I’m not a grandma yet, though my oldest daughter was married the end of last year. I’m looking forward to it, when ever the Lord chooses to bless them. My maternal gradmother was very dear to my heart, and we called her “Me-me.” The story goes my oldest sister couldn’t say grandma, and came up with this name. :o) Congratulations again, and many blessings to your family.
Ruth Ann,
I have just LOVED reading your blog! Congratulations on soon becoming a grandma!
I have to say, I’ve always loved the name grandma. I have friends that call their grandmas by other names, but mine have always been called grandma.
There are SO many things I could say about my one living grandma. I’m just so happy that she’s gotten to know my kids. I love seeing her with my kids and my kids with her. We get to see her this December and I’m SO excited! I’m 39 years old, but I feel like a little kid when I go to grandma and grandpa’s! We haven’t seen them in 4 years and I can’t wait!
Congratulations, Ruth Ann!
My mom is called maw-maw. It sounds real country. I know that you all are excited. Congrats!!!!
Morning Aunt Ruthie!!! All I’m going to say is WHAT A GORGEOUS baby these two sweeties are going to have! BEST WISHES – Sincerely, Jeannette
CONGRATS! My mom goes by Grams, my grandmas are Oma and Grammy. Oma is German for grandma. The thing that my Oma did with me that made me feel special is bake cookies and pies with me from such a young age and as I grew older, she taught me how to sew and eventually how to Quilt which now is my passion. Her home was always full of fresh baked goodies and was warm, comfortable and inviting. It was a place that shortly after arriving you would become for relaxed that you could go take a nap and most likely would, then wake up and have a snack (either apples and cheese or cookies, YUM!).
This is so exciting for your family! I feel the same when you commented that you don’t remember giving your kids permission to grow up. I am a mom of 5 ranging from 13 to 3 and I know I have time remaining with them being home, but it is going too fast as it is and the littlest one seems to be the one growing up the fastest. My baby is so big already and she is so smart and beautiful, it’s amazing. My prayers will be with your family during this exciting time!
Nicole
Congratulations, Aunt Ruthie!! All of us who follow your blog know that you will be a FABULOUS grandmother. My grandparents were a huge influence in my life, and I’ve only gotten to appreciate it more now that I’m older. I think that’s just a natural part of growing up. My Grammy made the yummiest chocolate cake with boiled icing, and she always went ALL OUT at Christmas time! It was her favourite time of year, and she liked having her family gathered and cooking for them. I think that “Grammy Ruthie” would sound perfect for you :) I hope and pray that all goes well with Ashley and that she has an easy and joyful pregnancy. God bless!
I’m so happy for you! What wonderful news. I hope your daughter and son-in-law live close by so you can visit often. When I was little my Mom and Dad both had to work and my mother’s mother lived next door. We would go to her house after school and play and help cook supper for the family. She was Mama Cantrell to us. Cantrell was my Mother’s maiden name and she really was a second Mama to us. I have so many fond memories of her. And it’s probably also how I got my love of cooking. Please keep us updated. I’m a long way from being a grandmother but I’ve really want to be called Grammy when that day comes.
We called our grandmother, Memaw actually my sister and I were raised by our grandparents. So they were more like parents to us.
They both passed away many years ago funny but with in just a couple of months apart. I guess they just didn’t want to be with out each other. The thing I remember most about my grandmother and her mother is staying glued to them in the kitchen. I loved to watch them cook and have carried on a lot of their recipes. I have 2 daughters and a son. I am going to create them cook books, so these recipes will continue, They don’t actually have grandparents, so the stories and and recipes of my own grandparents is the only thing I have to share with them. I didnt know this would make me cry. But I am so happy for your family. My grandmother always told me that you love your kids, but you love your grandkids twice as much. We sounded like the Walton family every night hollering through the house telling each other we love them. Because of their love for us, I am able to share that love with my own children and some day my grandchildren. They are 18, 16 and 12 and mama still says and prayer and gives them a kiss every night I cant lay down without it. Your web site is like a breath of fresh air I love your decorating.
God Bless
You are truly blessed to have children and now a grandchild on the way! I am so happy for you and all of your family. I do not have children but have always loved the name Mimi for it sounds so very special to me.
God Bless,
Gail
Congrats to you big time!! I am soo excited for you. I am not a gramma yet but hope to be someday and I hope my boys are reading this………….so it can be sooner than later. lol
I think just having a little one call you anything will be the icing on the cake but I love the old time gramma. Nothing better. Best of wishes to everyone.
Hugs
Congratulations !
My daughters are only 13 and 9 and I cant wait for them to grow up and make me a grand-mama yet at the same time I tell them they can never leave home lol
I heard a family friends granddaughter call her Mam’s. I just thought that was so cute. No one knows why she came up with that but its so adorable.
But I really think grandmama is what I would be called. You could be sugar pie grandmama.
One thing my grandmothers did is one of them use to rock me and pat my bottom and sing Mam’s lil baby loves shortnin bread. I in turn did that to both my daughters. And my other grandmother taught me to cook and live on what you got and never turn you back on family and take them in when they need you .
Ruthie your going to be a wonderful grandmama. That angel is so blessed to have you . And knowing how you are you daughter is going to be an impressive mama.
Congratulations on your new little gift from heaven, how wonderful.
I usually don’t comment but felt like I wanted to share your joy.
The Raggedy Girl
My mom picked “Granna” when she became a grandmother. A dear friend of hers had used it but didn’t need it anymore–she is with the Lord now! Congratulations, and enjoy each moment!
Congrats! Being a Nana is wonderful and I’m sure you will enjoy your little bundle just like I enjoy all 28 of mine!!! Love your blog…I am inspired all the time!
In my children’s lives, they have a Nana, a Grandma, and a Grammie. All three of these ladies have chosen the name they wanted our children to call them and each suits them.
You remind me of a Grammie:)
Oh, RuthAnn!!!!! I AM SO EXCITED FOR Y’ALL!!! I have been waiting to hear they were in the family way. :o) I am sure they are going to be wonderful parents. And they are beautiful…so you just know that baby is gonna be GORGEOUS! ;o) It’s only fitting! You can already tell by the ultrasound picture….this baby is SPECIAL! ;o) A huge CONGRATS to all y’all’s family! God’s most precious blessings to y’all. Praying right now for mother and baby. :o)
Now, onto names…I love Mimi. My momma is “Chewmomma”…it was supposed to be “Grandmomma” but Amelia Kate just started saying Chewmomma since she couldn’t get Grandmomma out! Haha! We love it better than anything we could have picked out…it totally cracks us up.
So happy for you . . . my boys are all teenagers . . . I can’t even begin to imagine all the changes we will see over the next decade . . . weddings and perhaps a grand baby or two? I agree with the person who said the grand babies will name you, but sometimes it may not be the name you want! LOL! When my little brother was first learning to talk, he could not say Grandma and for some reason it came out “Ga Guck”. Well of course Grandma hated it, so for those of us older grand kids, we couldn’t help but call her that . . . and of course with great drama added to the “Guck” part of the name. Poor thing . . . we teased her with that name until her dying days. And, Ga Guck, eventually transposed to Garlic. She was married to a man named Herb, so we would call them Herb & Garlic. We were terrible! Then my son, Dustin couldn’t say Grandma and he said “MeMa” I think because little ones learn “Mama” so soon, that it is an easy transition. So that is what my Mom has always been. We don’t spell it MeMaw like you suggested . . . that seems like what a donkey says! LOL! Whatever name you land at, I know you will be a great one!! Hugs & Blessings!
Brenda
Aunt Ruthie, I know you have mentioned being Italian and being Italian myself you know you have to be called “Nonna”. That is what my kids call their grandma, but I must admit my 3yo had such a hard time saying “Nonna” that she called her “Nonnie” and still does ha! The “o” in “Nonnie” is a hard “o” like it sounds in the word “road”. Did that make sense? Anyways I have already told my kids that when they have kids I will be called “Nonna”. There is nothing better than an image in my head of an Italian Nonna cooking in her big homey kitchen.
Congrats on your new grandbaby. So exciting indeed and what a wonderful blessing!
i am going to a 1st time grandma also. my daughter was married 6 weeks and now due april 1. yea! i know how you feel.
i like nan (grandma) and bop(grandpa) . my nephew calls his other grandparents that. my step-grandma always made me feel so special. she always took the time to teach me to crochet and do needlework. i never felt like a step granddaughter to her, even tho she had many of her own blood grandkids. take care and congrats.!
becky groff
It was so exciting to hear that you will be a Grandma for the first time. I still remember when I found out I was going to be a Grandma, very special time. I now have 19 grandchildren and each one is so special.
I have been called many different “Grandma” names, it really doesn’t matter, they are all special.
My Grandmother was very special to me. On my 11th. birthday she gave me a special wicker basket with a pair of lavendar pants and a book called “Raphael the Herald Angel”. I cherished that gift and saved the basket and book. Last January I was able to give the basket and book to my Granddaughter on her 11th. birthday. She was also very happy to receive this gift. (Just think, I have saved this gift for 49 years. The pants wore out but the book and basket were still in good shape. Wow)
The Lord sure does bless us with wonderful things. In my eyes the greatest blessings are not material things but my family. We are so very much blessed.
I pray that your daughter has a wonderful pregnancy and much joy during these next months and that she will deliver a healthy baby.
God Bless
Congratulations! I have a seven month old. Hold and kiss them much because they grow super quick.
Oh, Aunt Ruthie! Sweetest congratulations! You will be the very best grandma to that little darling. Of course, I will keep your daughter in my prayers as she goes through her pregnancy!
I am not a real grandma yet but I will be a great-auntie in December when my niece gives birth to her baby boy, Alexander! This is very exciting, too!
Please do enter me in your wonderful drawing…..what great meaningful giveaways you have chosen!! My favorite grandma name is Grammie which is what I called my own grandma many years ago….but whatever you are called will be chosen by that darling grandbaby and the name will sound like heavenly music to your ears!!
Hugs!
Georgia
Oh! I am so excited for you! A Grand-Baby! I don’t have a suggestion for a name, so don’t enter me in the contest. But I couldn’t read the news without congratulating you. A Grand-Baby! Much love to you and yours, Rebekah
I don’t have a blog yet, but follow yours and love it. I am a MiMi to 5 grandchildren. I also now have a great-grandson almost a year old. My daughter is a grandmother in her mid-forties and she is called “Honey.” I thought it different at first, but now I know many grandmothers that are called “Honey.” Seems to fit you or maybe you should be “Sugar!!”
Good Morning Ruthie,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! to Ashley and her dh, and you all!
Over the past year while reading your blog, and you telling of having children married, I just knew this announcement was going to happen , and I have been waiting for you to tell us that you and your dh were going to be grandparents!! I am thanking the Lord and rejoicing with you, and I will certainly be lifting her and her dh as well as the anxious grandparents up in prayer. God is so gracious!
We have seven grandchildren and hubby is known as PaPa, I am known as Me Maw, Grandma, Granny, and Maw Maw, And I so willingly answer to all of them, and love it every time I hear my name called, even if it is over the telephone.
I just know you both are going to be the best grandparents, and Summer Rose is going to be the best Aunt, You all are going to have so much fun!
I had a grandmother that I cherished so much, she was a devoted Christian, but was not wealthy by the world’s standards but was so rich in her relationship with Christ, and taught me how to trust Him in every way.
She made her living by farming and supplemented her income by selling butter, milk, and eggs to people in town. One of my favorite memories was going with her to make those deliveries, but while there in their home she would always ask them if there was any thing that they needed prayer for. And she would gather the family and pray. And on our way home she and I would be singing hymns, and sometimes if there was a revival near by we would just go to the service.
I have tried to carry on that love of God with our grandchildren and to let them know how much He loves them, and I know that because of your love for God and family that I have seen here that you are going to be the BEST GRANDMOTHER!
Best Wishes to you all. I am so looking forward to you keeping us updated.
Blessings,
Sue
Numbers 6:24-26: The Lord bless you and keep you ;The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.
Hi! This isn’t really a name suggestion but once you narrow down your favorite 2 or 3 options how about letting the baby pick once he or she is here? My mom couldn’t decide what she wanted to be called when I had my daughter (her first grandchild) and the day we brought my daughter home from the hospital my mom was asking what she should be called & said both options she was considering. The one that my daughter “responded” to is the one my mom went with. It was a cute bonding moment for the 2 of them. Congrats on your wonderful news & sending your daughter wishes for a happy healthy non eventful pregnancy!
Uh Honey! Congratulations Ruth. I have not yet been blessed to be a grandma, but my mom told me it was waay much more fun to br the grandma than the mommy! I love love your blog. One of my best memories of my sweet Grandma Monty was making cinnamon rolls with her. Those were truly special times. I think you ought to be gramma SugarPie!
Oh Joy! How exciting for you and your family!
I always liked what my brother in Kentucky would call his grandma, “Nanny”
I have a grandson who just turned one and two more on the way. I want him to call me “mama Arnnette”.
In central america, many grandchildren call their grandmas “Mama firstname”. Maybe it’s because many of the grandchildren are babysat by their grandmas and who else is like their mothers than their grandma’s:)
My grandson calls my husband, Tete.
Thank you for sharing your joy!
We use nanny. My mom was only 38 when she became a grandmother! Since both grandmothers are nanny one is called nanny and then her first name. The other one nanny and her last name.I think nanny Ruth sounds sweet!
Congratulations!!!!

Oh Ruthie…Congrats, Im so happy for you and your family..growing family that is…truely, what a wonderful holiday season to be extra thankful for. Blessings to you and your family. Hugs, Erica
Dear “Granny” Ruthie,
A big ole bunch of well wishes and prayers for you & Ashley. I am leaving you a one handed greeting today, because in the other arm lies my snuggly-wuggly grandson! His name is Judah, he’s almost 4 months old. You are so right! There is something so precious about a grandchild. Enjoy! P.S. Love your blog and visit almost daily! You have such a gift…blessing others with the gift of God’s love. Beautiful!! Again, welcome to the club… Judah’s Nanna, Carma
Congratulations on the baby. I know God will bless you and your family with a precious little bundle to love and cherish and to be grandparents is just perfect.
I have so many wonderful memories of special times with my Mamaw. She lived in a small town, and I loved to visit her cozy home. She always had a shelf in her pantry filled with all the special treats she knew I loved. She would send me home with any leftovers. She would also light an old kerosene light at night and tell me stories. My favorite ones were the stories she made up about Laura and “Little House on the Prairie.” She even wrote one down. How precious to have one of her stories in her own handwriting. My mother was so busy, but Mamaw always seemed to have “all the time in the world” for me. Now that I am Mom to two wonderful growing children, I don’t know how my Mom was able to accomplish all that she accomplished. She told me once how blessed she was to have a mother who enjoyed being a grandmother. It was never babysitting to her (or me), it was an adventure. She shared her life, beliefs, and most importantly her faith with me. Congratulations on your upcoming adventure. I know your grandchild will be as blessed as I am.
Congratulation to you Sweet Aunt Ruthie!
How lovely the smell of freshly powdered babies.I sooo look forward to those times. My girls are still in high school. My daughter learned to talk very young and she picked out her own name “Daba” her g”s were d’s for quite some time. My second daughter couldnn’t say her d’s and called her “Baba”. To this day their friends know her as “Daba”. They all think that is her name! Baba Ruthie is cute…There is a very beautiful cd from Nicollete Larson (sleep baby sleep?) very beautiful lullabies it was originally produced in 1994, it is a must have!
God bless you and your family

Congratulations on your growing family!!
I think the names “Nana” and “Mimi” are great names for Grandma’s. I also know 2 sweet grandparents that are called “Damma” and “Beepaw” ~ isn’t that fun?!
My grandmothers are Grandma and Nanny. My most favorite memories of my Grandma are bed times at her home when I was very young, she would play the organ in her living room and sing “Surely Goodness and Mercy shall follow me . . . “. And of my Nanny ~ I was spending the night at her home when I was a young teenager and I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom and as I passed her door I heard a quiet voice and when I paused at her door to listen it was her praying for me and my parents! I cried as I crept back to bed, what a wonderful memory!
Thanks for letting me share and blessings to you and yours!!
Congratulations Grandma!!!!
Congrats, Ruthie,
I know you are sooo excited.
My kids call my mom “nanny.”
I remember my Grandma always playing cards with me on Friday night.
Hi Grammy! Congratulations. I will keep your daughter and her little itty bitty baby in my prayers! My grandma was so quiet and shy and whenever someone could make her laugh, it would fill everyone’s hearts with joy! We usually lived in different states but she always kept in touch by letter.
Congratulations~ ~What a blessing.
I have always loved the name my friend Carolyns grandbabies call her. Nini (Knee Knee). I’m sure you will find the perfect one.
My babies call their Grandma, “Ma…Ma” and I’ve also heard Nana.
I always just used “Grammy” or “Grandma”
Happy Birthday on the 7th. My birthday is the 5th and my anniversary is the 7th. :)
Congratulations, Ruthie!!!!
I am the blessed grandma of two little darlins, a girl and a boy and there is no greater joy than having their sweet little arms hug you(except, of course, my hubbies hugs!). I am called “Me-Ma” and it is wonderful. I have my own wonderful memories of my grandmother as she and I would make pancakes together on her griddle and go to Christmas Eve celebrations together. I can still feel and smell the warmth of her home on Christmas and the rest of the year, too! God Bless you and yours!!! Robyn
Congratulations!! You’re going to be such a wonderful and loving grandma!! That brings me to my name choice – Grandma. It’s traditional, it speaks of the fact that you’re grand, and it’s what I called my precious grandmothers. The greatest thing my Grandma did for me was to sit with me on Saturdays and write Scriptures in a little book (which I still have) for me to memorize. This put the Word in my heart and made such a difference in my life. She also taught me to crochet when I was 4 years old – something I still do to this day.
Congratulations, again, to you and to your beautiful daughter, Ashley.
God bless you – Julie
P.S. Oct. 7th is my hubby’s birthday, too! :)
Ruthann-Oh what WONDERFUL news! I would definitely go with ‘Grandma’. To me that name is indicative of love. My paternal grandma (and grandpa) had a farm in Mulhall, OK. and while growing up my siblings and I would spend one week during summer vacation with them. I learned how to milk a cow, wrestle hens for their eggs, run a separator so that grandpa would have cream with his morning bowl of Cheerios (along with bacon, eggs, and toast)-yum!! I ‘assisted’ with the butchering of a fried chicken dinner, but only once. My sister and I would help her do the laundry using a wringer washer and putting bluing in the rinse water along with liquid fabric softener. I can still smell that smell-so clean and fresh. She taught me by showing me with lots of love and patience. Of course now all I have are these memories and what precious memories they are! I know that you are making lots of plans for your ‘sweetie pie’ and you to make precious memories too! Take care. Ellen
Congratulations Grandma! Babies are such a blessing from God and so are Grandmas! I am not a grandma, but have two children who adore their grandparents more than anything. My daughter is 11 and still cries half of the 3 hr trip home…she is such a sweet girl and adores her Grandma. Growing up my grandma would have a tin of tootsie rolls hidden where only she and I knew where they were. When we would visit, the two of us would sneak off to our tootsie roll tin and unwrap, eat and giggle and giggle and giggle. I’m pretty sure everyone knew what we were doing by the chocolate drools, but we sure pretended not to be eating candy! A gift to my mom when I learned I was pregnant was a tin of tootsie rolls…
Blessings to your daughter and her husband as they experience one of lifes greatest joys. God is good all of the time!
Congratulations!!!!
What a fun idea to have a giveaway to celebrate! Let the Lord give you your sweet title! The little one will not be able to say grandma and will come up with his or her term of endearment for you straight from the heart. The first grandbaby gets to name grandma! :D
I loved going to my grandma’s house. It always smelled like coffee and she ALWAYS had cookies in her cookie jar just waiting for the grandkids when they stopped in. We never left her home empty handed we were sent off with a baggie of cookies and a small bouquet of fresh cut flowers from the garden.
Thank you for letting us share in your wonderful news!
God Bless You,
Donna K.
I would LOVE to enter into this giveaway! Very neat, congratulations on becoming a grandma! :)
Well I really like just plain old “Grandma”, as that is what I call my grandma on my mom’s side of the family, where as we all call my grandma on my dad’s side of the family “Nanny” as she is from England and that is one way they call their grandmas over their! :)
Blessings,
Miss. Antoinette K.
PS. You can contact me at : ajkonvalin(at)gmail(dot)com! :)
Oh, I forgot to mention that my Grandmother blessed me with sharing her love of sewing with me! I started sewing when i was 5 years old, and I am 18 now (almost 19) and now i share the very same love of sewing as she has! i thank her so much for all of those sweet memories I have of sewing with her, and I cherish them! :)
Blessings,
Miss. Antoinette K.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Our oldest daughter and her husband had her first child and our first grandchild 6 days ago! I’m still floating!!! He is the most beautiful little boy I have ever seen – my husband says maybe even more beautiful than our own (I’m not going there!) – Our grandchildren are going to call me KK – it is what I was called all my life – my oldest brother couldn’t say my name. All my cousins, aunts, and uncles and eventually my nieces and nephews called me that as well. It just seemed natural! I called my grandmother Mimi and my children call my mom Mimi as well. My vote is for Mimi – there are so many wonderful memories tied up with that name.
When I look at my grandson’s face, all I can say is “God is so Good!!!
congratulations! My vote is for Grammy. If I could make my mom a grandma I would want my kids to call her Grammy. (Unfortunately we cannot have children.) It sounds so sweet coming from a little ones mouth. Enjoy that grandbaby immensely. Babies are truly a miracle and a gift from God!
Well, comment number 418….that’s a lot of comments…makes you feel loved doesn’t it….
so from one Grandmother to a new Grandmother….hip-hip hooray !!!!
My little girl is sitting here with me saying well wait till she has 5 of them running all over the place….you see I have 10 grand babies and a 14 year old son and an 11 year daughter still at home….they think their lives are taken over by my grand-kiddos….you will love it!
My grand kids call me KK…cause my name is Kandy Kay…and well it just ended up that way….any name you choose will sound wonderful !
My Grandmother use to clean out her purse and give me all her left over “Business”…I would fill my purse with her old lip stick, powder and puff, mirrors, gum and a hanky ! I loved my “business” thats what she would call it…to this day I LOVE purses and” business”!
God bless you on this new adventure !
Kandy

LOL. i still call her mom to this day. to me it’s just a name like any other.. it doesn’t feel like the same “mom” i call my mom. and my other one, i call mamaw. i love them both.. dont know what i would do without my grandmas… and they couldn’t be more different from each other!

Congrats!!!
I have been “Grammy” for almost two years now– and LOVE it!!:) So I would suggest Grammy since I love being called that so much.
But no matter what they call you, I’ll tell you that the first time they call you by name will melt your heart.
I have a grandson (2), granddaughter (6 mo) and a baby brother to the grandson due in Nov! Joy all around!!:)
Hugs,
Linda C
Congratulations!! This is exciting news! You have a beautiful daughter. What a blessing. I would stick with GRANDMA for a name. It is traditional and that is good. :)
Thank you for the giveaway also. You always have incredible giveaways and I’m all in!
Lisa
The cutest thing Ive ever heard a grandmother be called was Howdy. My great aunt Gladys would tell the story of how she was playing with her two toddler grandsons and she put on one of their plastic cowboy hats on and said” howdy boys”, and ever since that day they called her Howdy! They are now both in their 30s and they still called her that unitl she passed away this past May. I thought it was very original and special. Congratulations on becoming a Grandmother!
Oh I could just DIE !! Your site is utterly AMAZING – my words seem too pathetic to describe it…….I am inspired beyond words !! Thankyou for the inspiration you have given me today – my world is richer for your website ! Hugs from Australia !
Congratulations! You will definately have beautiful grandchildren because you daughter and her husband are model beautiful themselves. I say anything except Granny is a good name. My children called my MIL that and she was so young and pretty that it just didn’t fit. Love your blog!
One of my most precious memories with my grandmas was the amount of quality time they gave me and my sweet sisters :) There was endless board games being played, and cookies being made, and sewing lessons going on!! Those are precious memories I will forever be thankful for!!
Congratulations on your newly expected grandchild. I pray that the Lord blesses all of you!
Congratulations!!! Babies are so wonderful. I think that Grammy Sugar, would be the perfect choice. Blessings to your whole family as you prepare, there is a catholic singer, Marie Bellet she has a song, “One More Soul”, it says it so well. “Send us one more soul for the heavnly choir, one more soul that is our desire……. Enjoy every moment with your daugther.
What wonderful news! You have truly been blessed! Thank you for such a wonderful blog and taking the time to share the sweet things of your life with us. It inspires me so much to read your postings, and I wish the very best for you and your family and the newest little blessing.
When I was little I always called my grandmother Nanny Rose, and my children call their grandmother Nana so I think Nanny Ruth or Nana Ruthie would be precious!
Enjoy this time with your daughter…it is fleeting as you well know.
My kids started calling my mother Gammy because they couldn’t say their “r’s”. We love it :)
Congratulations!
Love and prayers,
Jenny
G,Day Ruthie…Just wanted to say congratulations and wish you and your family all the best.I pray the Lord bless your daughter and her hubby with a healthy baby…Guess you will have to get the skinny knitting needles out now and get busy…Ha ha….well thats what country folks used to do isn’t it…Ahhh layettes and booties in soft pastel colours ,the sweet smell of Johnson’s and Johnson’s baby lotion and baby powder. Love and Best wishes from Downunder.
Congratulations Dear Ruthie on the future arrival of your new precious grandbaby. Any child would be so lucky to have you as its godly grandmother. My personal favorties for names are grammy, gammie and meemsy. However children tend to pick their own names for their grandparents. We tried to get my first daughter to say nana but she isisted on caller your grandmother “maw”. And it stuck through to my two other children as well. My mil has 16 grandchildren and they all car her nana except my three children. :)
Can’t wait to see pictures of the new bundle of joy. Praying for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
Congratulations, Ruthann! You will make a wonderful Grandma! My girls call my mother Gram and sometimes Grammy and Cookie! Don’t you think Cookie would be a great name for someone as sweet as you?!?
Oh Congratulations, what a fun surprise. You’re going to be the best Grandma.
As for a name, how about Gaga. My son calls my mom gaga, has since he started talking, she said it was appropriate as she is gaga for him.
Oh Aunt Ruthie I am so happy for you!!! I don’t know that joy yet, my daughter isn’t even dating anyone!! LOL We have talked about this before though, and most of the “Grandma” names are taken up in my family, Maw Maw, Grams, Gramma, MeMaw. So I decided that since I never really want to be old, but long to be a Grandmother, I am going to be called “Lola”…..it doesn’t mean anything, but my daughter and I decided it has a ring to it, and probably noone else uses the name…..LOL So Lola it is…..and I long for the day it starts being used…other than to the cat…LOL
Congratulations! A brand new baby is the mos wonderful gift! Best wishes!

Well, Hello Aunt Ruthie!
I have thought for some time that you and I might be “soul sisters!” I am the mother of 4 beautiful children, just like you! Two boys and two girls. Tyler, 25; Trevor, 21; Natalie, 15; and Callie Brooke, 7. WE are a Christian family. I absolutely LOVE Fall. I am married to my best friend and the funniest man I know. And my family and home are my dearest treasures. I check your website daily for inspiration!
Here’s my story: The year our oldest son Tyler was graduating, we found out that we were being blessed again with a precious baby. Needless to say we sent Graduation announcements and Birth announcements in the same year!!! My ‘grandma’ name had to be cute and different, since I already had a Nana, Grammy, 2 Grannies and a Grandma.
So…..I thought and thought…..it had to sound Southern, of course…..so I came up with…..Mamsie (pronounced ma’am -zee).
The rest of the story is the fact that my husband wanted to be called Big Daddy…..and I was NOT ABOUT TO BE CALLED BIG MAMA.
Anyway…..many blessings and happy times during the wait.
Love,
‘Mamsie’ and Big Daddy Stribling
Odessa, Texas
Whoops!!
I left out part of the story!!! My son Tyler married his childhood sweetheart while they were students at Texas A&M. When my baby girl was just 3, I became a Grandmother.
That’s when I created the name Mamsie. I just realized that I left that most important part out of my story!
Love,
‘Mamsie’
OH HOW THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!!! I became a Mum Mum for the first time 18 months ago. It is EXACTLY like being in love. You cannot eat, cannot sleep, all you do is dream and think about that baby!!!! (not as much while she was pregnant, I LOVED that part) but I was NOT prepared for the overwhelming love i would feel for my new grandson the minute he was born. He is my BOO BEAR and I would do ANYTHING in the world for him and to protect him. WHAT A BLESSING. I thank God EVERY DAY for letting me have the gift of being a grandmother. NOTHING like it in the world and you won’t know the feeling until that baby is born. It was even more life changing than when I had my own sweet precious baby girls, whom I love more than life itself!!! It’s the strongest bond I’ve ever known. I AM SOOOOO happy for you!!!!
I am MUM MUM because my daughter went to Scotland for a study abroad in college and came back calling me MUM , so naturally, I am now MUM MUM.
Sadly, both sets of my grandparents were gone when I was born so I have no memories of them at all. I can only tell you that for my own grandson, I play games with him that others do no, sing songs that I make up for him, and call him BOO BEAR, my own special nickname for my darling Andrew.
I cannot wait to hear more as your sweet baby girl goes through the pregnancy. You are such an inspiration!!!
This is great! I can’t wait to hear more. My sister too is becoming a grandma for the first time. She’s waited a LONG time. I’m happy for you, Your daughter will need you now probably more than she has in a long time. I’m praying for her, and will continue to. Congratulations!
Hi! This is my first time visiting your blog…CONGRATS on the big news!
We’re expecting our first little one in two months, and my mom had a tough time deciding on what she wanted to be called…she finally chose “GiGi”. (We think!)
Good luck! Can’t wait to hear what you choose!
Dear Aunt Ruthie!
Congratulations, this is wonderful news. You’re going to be the best Grandma. Here in Iceland grandmother is “amma” ;) Best regards, Ransy.
My girls call my Mom “NaNa”. I love it!
Congrats on your soon to be Grammie status. Grammie is what I am called, that is the same as my Mom was to my kids. What ever name you choose will be great, and you will answer to anything if the grans call out. Cheers, Cher in Victoria
Congratulations on such wonderful news. I’m going to be a “Nana” for the second time when my daughter gives birth to a baby girl this month. My grandson, Brandt, teaches me so much when I see him….far more than I thought a 2.5 year old could. Cherish this time with your daughter because an unforgettable journey is beginning.
Congrats!!!! You are going to be a great Grandma. I vote on being called Mamaw. One of the best memories I have of my mamaw is when she would play hours on end of the game “Sorry” with me and my brother. She would give us each a coke and we would play the night away. Also, I would like to add that she was a huge influence on my relationship with the Lord. She was the most Godly woman I know and I love the fact that she took the time to pass that love for the Lord on to me. Congrats again!!
Congrats on the baby news! I call my grandmother Sweetie and my friends nephews call their grandmother honey. I love your site and I love your house!
Martha
Congratulations to you all. My oldest is only 13 but I truly can’t wait to be a grandma :)
I am partial to Nana. That’s what I called my moms mother and what my mom is called.
My mil is grandma. It’s hwat she wanted and i think it’ sless confusing for my littles to know exactly who we are talking about.
God bless~
We will put Ashley on our prayer list. By the way I can’t wait to be “Nonni” someday. My daughter will be twenty-five in January, and she will be married 2 years. I am excited to see all your thoughts on becoming a GrandMa. I’m thinking about starting a journal on the day I find out each time one of my children is expecting. I thought it would be neat for the grandchildren to have when they are older. I will probably write some of my prayers for them in it.
Blessings!
Oh my gosh, a creamy dreamy baby. How wonderful. I’ll live my grandbaby dreams through you. Although I have three sons, 29, 24, 22, neither of them are close to having children. They’re not even married yet. Well… maybe one will be soon, you never know, good news is happening all around me lately. I remember when my babies were teeny weeny. I could stare at them forever. Just the smell of their skin and their breath took my breathe away!! I did not have any grandparents around me when I was growing up but my favorite gramma name is still gramma. Well…. in the beginning it sounds like gamma. hehehe… Even though I did not have grandparents around, my parents had many good friends who loved my sister and I like we were their own. Uncle Boobie always had chocolate in his pockets for us and Auntie Erna made the best cakes and sweets. I loved going to her place to visit. She used to play Austrian records and I would dance around the circular rug in the livingroom. What fun I had and what wonderful memories! I’m so happy for you. Bless your heart. Oh, and thanks for the sweet, delicious, and beautiful giveaway!! Your the best.
Much love, Christina
Congratulations Aunt Ruthie!!! You will LOVE being a grandma. I only have one grandaughter (almost 4 yrs. old) and it is so wonderful. She calls me mom-mom . Keeping Ashley in my prayers to have a safe pregnancy. Your giveaway is just beautiful!
Blessings,
Gina
Well, when I was a “youngin” we called our grandparents Mommom and Poppop. Now, my kids do the same for my side.
For their Daddy’s side, they follow suit for what he did when he was little and call his grandmother- Grammy.
I’m happy for you–no matter what you get called! LOL
I’m hoping to being a Mommom in the future some day!
Hi,
CONGRATULATIONS !!!!
This is so very wonderful. I can understand that you are full of joy !!
I’m from The Netherlands and we call grandmother : oma, you pronounce that just like Obama, but then without the ba, so oma.
I love nana too ; )
Have a fantastic weekend.

Congrats to you and your family. Nothing is more wonderful to hear than when a baby is coming into such a wonderful family.
Congratulations to you and your (expanding) family!! I am a military mama with five children of my own and can’t say how excited I am for you all! We are stationed in Italy right now and those sweet little cheek-pinching Italian grandmas who LOVE LOVE LOVE babies inspire me to vote for Nonna as your new grandma name. Since you have an Italian heritage I think it would fit perfectly! Am praying for a healthy baby and pregnancy. Ciao, bella!
How exciting!! I will be praying for your daughter! What a blessing! My three sweet babes call my mom “Gammi”!! She is only 47 so she thought it sounded young! We think its adorable!
I agree it’s always fun to let the little ones decide what to call their grandparents, but when I read your announcement the first name which came to mind was, “Grandma Shug” as in SUGAR! Whatever he/she calls you, congratulations on your dreamy-creamy baby. I hope I’m not far behind you, but none of mine are married yet, so first-things-first, right?
Dana
After 456 comments, I don’t even know if you will read this far, but I wanted to extend my sincere congratulations to you and your family! My nanny was very special to me. She let me polish her nails my favorite color…….. (PURPLE!!0 (YIKES!!!) and never complained. She slept over our house in MY room and it was such a treat. We used to watch the Carol Burnett show together and just laugh so hard. So many wonderful memories. My other nanny, my siblings called, ma-mam. She was gone before I was born so I regretfully did not know her. Your grandbaby will be so…. blessed to have such a wonderful family to be raised in. You have my prayers.
Congrats to you…how fun! My sister just had her first grandbaby and she is Gigi to little Cecilia. I love it!
CoNgRaTs!!!
My Mom is Grammy…but my baby calls her frammy:/ And mine was Gram-sweet, it always reminded me of graham crackers, which she always bought for us.
Also she hid sodas and bags of chocolate and told us she wouldn’t be mad if we looked for anything and ate it. (My parents weren’t big on sweets) So that was always great-All of us sitting in her kitchen, watching Saved by the Bell on her little TV and drinking one soda after another, passing around chocolates-while the adults were chatting in the other end of the house!
Also she had the greatest old house-and she usually gave my a little figurine from her china cabinet when we visited. Once she gave me her turquoise ring that I loved. I even wore it on my wedding day!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy for you! My daughter just got engaged (at the age of 38) so I am PRAYING she may be able to have just ONE baby for us to love! As for your name: I like Mom-Mom. That is what I will be IF we have a grandbaby! OR Nonna: that is Italian for Grandmother. I know your heart is full of love right now:):) Hugs, Pinky
Ruthann,
You are in for the time of your life I live several hours from my one and only, so far, granddaughter so I relish the time I get to spend with her. Her father is from Tanzania, Africa and there the grandparents are called Beebee and Boboo (short sound on the o). We decided to adopt these names to honor our son-in-law’s heritage. Just a thought.
Congratulations … life starts anew … a little miracle. It’s amazing; life is like the seasons, a new generation and the next one moves on, just the way it should be.
Best wishes and wishing you so much happiness and joy. This will be a great year enjoying her pregnancy and then the birth… enjoy it all!
Congratulations on being a Grandma-to-be! Unfortunately, I never remembered my Grandma so I want to do everything I can to make sure my little grandson (and others to be born) remember me. I have a 9-month old who lives far, far away so I send him books each season. I still need to record my voice reading a book so he’ll get used to Granny’s voice and know me when he sees/hears me! I’d love to win your giveaway.
Oh My Word!!! 464 comments already?!! Is this the NY Lottery?!!! LOL! (0; Well, Congratulations to you, Ruthie, and please do count me in for the drawing!! When you mentioned Grand-mama, I thought THAT was CUTE!!! So, that’s my vote! ~tina
My grandmother always played old songs on the record player such as the teddy bear song and fun ones that you never tire of! And the cookie jar was always full. The smell of cookies makes me think of her. She always had something magical to play with. Things like glass antiques that your parents would never let you touch!
“children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are there fathers” Proverbs 17:6
enjoy the blessings God has given you! hugs and love, Rachel
Congratulations and you are in for the most wonderful time of your life! I’m Nana to 3 GRANDsons, oh my, they are our sunshine! It’s been 15 years since our oldest came into this world. The months leading up to his birth, as exciting as they were, could not foretell the bundle of love that we held in our arms. I had to pinch myself to realize this was not a dream! So many things you can do to make memories. Start now using your daughter and son in laws pictures to scrapbook a very special gift for their shower. You can add pictures of the things they loved (thank you Internet for allowing us to go back in time and recover memories), stories of their birth, their childhood. Then after the baby arrives, their will be that first time they bring him to Grandma’s house, first babysitting when it will take the two of you to take care of one little baby, first time spending the night at Nana’s. Girl, I cannot tell you just how much fun Grandma is….

Congratulations on being a grandma-to-be!! I love being “Grandma Honey” to my two sweet little grandsons. I loved my grandmas and miss them so much. I can remember snapping green beans and husking corn on the back porch with them. They were both wonderful cooks. My own mom rarely made pancakes but whenever I stayed with my grandma she always made sure I had as many as I wanted.
Congratulations! I hope you all enjoy the wait for the newest member of your family. My husband and I are not grandparents yet and probably won’t be for a while. In my husbands Dutch family and in my German family grandmothers are ‘Oma’. Many people I know feel ‘Oma’ sounds too old. Personnally I like, ‘Nana’, because of ‘Peter Pan’ and the kids show ‘Nanalan’
What wonderful news! Congratulations! I just got home from spending the weekend with my sweet Granny. She’s 98 years old. What a blessing. As for names, I love the traditional variations of Grandmother….Grandma, Grandmama, Grandmommy. Since this is your first grandchild, he/she gets the privilege of giving you your special name. What fun!
Susan in GA
Congratulations! That’s wonderful news!
Dear Ruthie,
Congratulations Ruthie to you and your family on the expected baby. My daughter and I love your blog and read it every day. For generations our family has called grandmother, Mumsie, and that is who I am to 6 grandchildren. When I hear it called I turn around and smile because I couldn’t see my Mumsie very often so it brings great happiness to me. She lived in Louisiana and when we went to see her it was like going to see the Queen! Unlike my Mumsie, I make cookies, noodles and pies with my grandkids and roll in the beds with them. They are all nearly grown now but I still love their hugs and still smile when I hear the name Mumsie. I will pray for your daughter and her husband.
Wow! What wonderful news. I think you’ve already decided on a name. How about “Sugar Pie”?

I have another “name” for you. A library customer’s grandchildren call her “G”. I like it. Simple.
My granny (Father’s mother) was a country woman and she and grandpa farmed 200+ acres. We went trash pickin’ together. Back in the day people would just dump their trash out in the woods when they thought no one was looking. My granny would walk miles, with us in tow, to find a junk pile so that she could claim some junk to turn into treasures. We would glue noodles all over a high heeled shoe and then spray paint it. She was artsy before artsy was cool. We had the most wonderful Easter’s at the farm. Acres and Acres would be planted in wildflowers and the eggs would be hidden there. There were 19 grands and on Saturday before Easter Sunday we would all meet at granny’s to dye our eggs. We each had our own dozen. Great Times! My Grandmother (mom’s mother) was a prissy city lady. One year (when I turned 6) she made me a little pink birthday cake that was baked in a black cast iron 6″ skillet and frosted pink. I thought I was just hot stuff with a pink cake. I miss my grandparents very much. I am thankful that both my children did know them (my kids are 31 and 28). Congratulations again.

Congratulations, you will no doubt be a blue ribbon grandma! As hard as we’ve tried to get my girls to call my mom Nana, my oldest picked up on me calling my mom, Mom, so to her, Grandma was Mom and I’m Mommy. There is a disticnt difference between the two and it took us awhile to figure it out!
Congratulations, Aunt Ruthie! You have probably heard it a thousand and one times by now but it’s true.. you are going to make a wonderful Granma..or rather “Grinma”.. which is the name I am suggesting because I know you are smiling ear to ear.
Now one thing that our dad did for us which we always loved is leave a light sprinkle of flour on the bare floor near the cookie (or carrot) plate so that we could see when proof of when Santa and the Easter Bunny came in to our house. We could not wait to wake up to find their foot prints before checking out to our gifts. That is one thing that I want to pass down because I know you always have flour on hand! ;)
Congratulations to you and your daughter!!
I never got to know either of my grandmothers very closely but I can tell you that my grandma on my mom’s side was an amazing woman. She had 9 children herself, then 26 grandchildren, and at the time of her death, 50+ great grandchildren!! And up until a month before she died of breast cancer(which she hid from all of us), she still managed to send every single one a birthday card(always with a few dollars in it) and she included spouses too. And we always recieved a Christmas package as well. She also made the most amazing sugar drop cookies with candy fruits that she included in the Christmas mailings.
I think with the huge joy you are showing in your post, you will be an amazing grandma and the baby will be very blessed to have you.
Wishing your daughter a very happy and healthy 9 months!!!
Congratulations – how exciting! My children call their grandma, Nani. She is a wonderful grandma, with so many sweet traditions. My favorite is the annual Christmas cookie bake-off. She invites all of her daughters and daughter-in-laws, along with their daughters, over for a day-long bake-off. She supplies the ingredients and we provide the “labor”. The flour flies as we all sing Christmas carols. Such precious times!
Congratulations! Not only will they be great parents but you’ll be a wonderful grandma. And, Happy Birthday to you!
Oh Ruthie…I just became a “Grammy” for the first time twice over in the past 5 months. BOTH of my dauts gave me grannybabies EXACTLY 2 months apart! One gave me a grannyson and the other gave me a grannydaut and I am still flyin’ high! There is nothin’ like it….nothin’ in the world! Those memories instantly flashed back to when they themselves were just newborns…the smells, the sounds, the peace that a sleeping baby brings…ahh…the Lord is so good to us! Congratulations on your upcoming bundle! They are each such a special gift and the blessing not only comes in the form of that precious cupcake, but also as you watch your girlie become a mommy…grow and learn to trust the Lord deeper….it is sooooo where we step back and enjoy as we watch God take over and grows us all up the rest of the way.
Enjoy each minute…savor every touch and pray for those youngin’s…everytime you think of em!
Now…I call myself Grammy to them for now (3 mos. and 5 mos.) but I’ll go with whatever they utter out of their mouths…b/c in my eyes…for now…they can do no wrong! ; )
Memaw is what the grandkids call me. One thing my kids remember about their grandmother was how she always smelled like roses. She used tea rose perfume and it smelled wonderful. Just like you would think a granny should smell.
I called my paternal grandmother Mama and we added our last name as in Mama Smith for example. One thing I remember about her is how she could comfort my fears by explaining things in relation to God. She was a godly woman. That is how my adult mind sees her now.
ohhh! that is WONDERFUL News What a Blessing Grandchildren are I am the very Blessed Nanna of 3 beautiful Boys they are the sunshine of my life. I am soooo excited for you Aunt Ruthie I will keep your Beautiful Ashley Baby and Glen in my prayers congratulations and all of Gods Blessings xox Trish ;)
Wow!! CONGRATULATIONS! What exciting news!!
I have one grown daughter, and 5 children still at home. Watching her grow up has been very sweet, and yet very sad as she is not around as much or in the same way as she used to be. Having grandchildren must make the whole growing up thing so much sweeter!!!! Many prayers and blessings to your family.
Jenn
Congratulations! Babies are so special, you are going to have the time of your life with your new addition. My mom chose to be called Nana with my babies, my MIL is Gigi, and my friends children call her mother Lovey. That is by far my favorite. I just think it embodies everything a Grandma should be. I’m sure whatever choice you make will be perfect!
Congratulations! Children are a blessing! My children call their grandmothers “Mom-mom” and “Grandma.” We live close to both of them and it is a joy that they can be part of their everyday lives. I’ll be praying for Ashley as she prepares for this little one. And happy birthday to you! Mine is Oct. 7 as well.
My 20 month old grandson calls me “Gran”……love it….doesn’t sound too old and just sounds sweet. He is a joy!
Congratulations on this most exciting news, Aunt Ruthie. I just know you are going to be a wonderful grandma. I look forward to future posts filled with creative and wonderful tips on being a blessing to your grandchildren. My one and only grandma raised her 6 children as a single mother during the depression. She homesteaded on a farm in Kansas until her husband thought it would be a better idea to load up the family and move to Detroit to look for work in the auto industry. Before they had a home to live in he passed away leaving her very poor. Anyhow, she worked hard to raise her children to be successful people. I think my fondest memory of her is the cards she would send to me on my birthday with a little note and a dollar bill in it. I knew that for her that was hard earned money and treasured it all the more. I still have some of the cards she sent. I often look at them and am reminded of what a strong lady she was and it inspires me.
I will keep Ashley in my prayers for a happy & healthy pregnancy. She & Glenn are a very nice looking couple.
I am NONNA — Italian for Grandmother, and my darling is NONNO, Italian for Grandfather. My grandchildren started calling me Grandma Nonna because I did not want them to think of my name with anything with NO in it!! But when my oldest grand, Rachel Grace, learned that she was actually saying Grandma, Grandma, it just became Nonna!
I don’t post often cause I can’t always find the proper way to, but I know I wrote at least once, saying in you I believe I found my TWIN…and I’m still feeling that way!
And I DID cry when I read your post!
Congratulations, Nonna Ruthie!
Love and hugs,
from one Nonna to Another! Oh Baby is right!
Well you should be “Lolly” of course, and your husband, “Pop”
CONGRATULATIONS on your soon to come MIRACLE!!!
I just became a grandma 6 months ago. It IS as great as they say! Picking a name was a hard choice for me, but I finally decided on GRAMMY. So far, it has been a good choice and it goes with my husband who is has GRAMPS.
Oh Congratulations!!!!! May the LORD be with Ashley daily! (And Nana-Roo too!)
I am Nana. My mother is “Grandleria” (her name is Valeria), I had a Mamo and a Granny. I needed to be different….my Mamo was extremely awesome! So I couldn’t take her name. She was a biscuit making…everything homemade…spotless house…prayer warrior of a woman! Had time for everything and was always willing to lend a hand to others. My sweet memories of her house included summer stays, her old wringer washer, hanging clothes on the line with her, sleeping with the windows open at her house, listening to her sing us to sleep, and rub our backs. Gardening at her house, gathering the eggs, and picking blueberries was among the childhood thrills.
God was too good to me in the grandmother department! Granny was a ball of fishin’ fun! Time spent with her in the kitchen too but as soon as we could, we’d break outta there for the pond. Her sons dug her a pond of her very own and stocked it with some mighty fine catfish and bream. Summer fun!
Ruthie, YOUR blog is such a blessing! I enjoy visiting, and although rarely comment (you don’t have time to answer them all!) I feel as if I’ve come home when I visit.
Have a blessed week!
Happy Birthday to you Sweet little Grandma,
I like Grandma the best it just sounds like cookies coming from the oven,a big hug and soft arms that just hold you tight. My own grandma, Anna Corrine was a beautiful woman with a very fiesty spirit. When I became pregnant with my first child and I was not married at the time, I remember staying at her house one night and I was already in bed and she came in with just her undies and t-shirt on and told me she loved me and everything was going to alright. My dearest grandma loved me no matter what I had done. The baby that I did have is now 17 and bigger than his momma and we have gone thru some trying times but like my grandma I will always love him.
God Bless you Sweet Birthday Girl, Ranching Momma
Your blog is one of my very favorites…wish you’d post more…I check yours every single day….your children are beautiful! I know how anxious you are about becoming a gramma….we just had our 23rd grand born this past June to our youngest daughter….I love the music you choose also….looking forward to reading more from you!
Hello Aunt Ruthie,
Well I had a Babci (Proun: bopchee) it means Grandmother in Polish, and I loved her so much. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about her. My fondest memory of Babci is when I would go over her house, she would be waiting for me (now, you have to picuture the cutest little grandmother) in her lovely smelling kitchen with her apron on, and she would say with arms wide open “Hello baby!” I’m tearing up thinking about it right now (gosh I miss her).
Babci might be a little too much for you unless you are Polish. When my girlie girls where just little bits and just starting out talking, they would call mother mother-in-law Mimi. They couldn’t say Grammy. My girls are now 9 and 4 and every now and then they’ll call her Mimi. :)
Well Aunt Ruthie thank you for letting me share my Grandma names and my lovely memory of my Babci.
Sending you big smoochies :)
Kelli
Congrates to you! It is so wonderful to hear how happy you are about being a grandma! Too many moms don’t want that title, and I think that it is sad! I look forward to being a grandma someday (my oldest is just 9, so I have awhile;-) anyway, I think Granny Ruthie sounds perfect (maybe because that is what my children call my mom sometimes;-) but you never know, I think the best name is the one that the baby comes up with on their own. (my 2 year old yells out “papa, papas here!) My grandma is 93 now, and I know my times with her are short. We use to mow her yard when I was little, she always had cookies and homemade bread. but I will always remember watching old movies with her, she got me hooked. and listening to Paul Harvy. everyday at noon she turned it on. If I close my eyes I can hear and smell her house. best wishes to your family!
aaaah, congratulations to you!
my sweet little baby girl is 2 and it is so hard to imagine that one day she will be a mama too!!! it is so refreshing to read your blog and to hear how much you treasure and enjoy each of your children and being a homemaker…i’m a stay-at-home mommy and your blog is such an encouragement to me…thank you so very much for doing it!
in christ’s love,
jodi
Congratulations Aunt Ruthie on this sweet news! I called both of mine Grandma ____ (insert last name). I’m not sure how that came about it’s just the way it was. My maternal Grandma was a cookie baking, candy jar filling type of Grandma. Her and Grandpa stopped at 10 each morning for a coffee and danish/sweet. Their 90 year old home was so much fun to visit. I always knew what time it was because of the chiming clock and the smell of coffee wafting up the steps in the morning. We only were able to visit twice each year – Summer and Christmas. The train tracks were on the other side of the field. When trains would pass the old bed would shake. You knew you were at Grandma’s! She was a terrific cook! I now have her old enamel mixing bowl. I think of her each time it’s used. I know you will make your Grandchildren feel so special and encourage them in the way they are to go. Children have a special way to pronounce names, you might end up changing what you think you might want to be called, when you hear your grandchild try to say your name.
Congrats!!!! What a blessing children truly are.
Congratulations to you and your family!
The grandkids call my Mom – Gramsy or Memaw
They call Hubbys’ Mom – Nana
God Bless Each & Every One Of You :)
Dear Aunt Ruthie,
I just love your excitement over your children and grandchildren. You inspire me. I’m a mom of 5 ages 10,9,7,5 and 3. So I in the throes of it all and don’t find joy as much as I’d like. Thanks for your encouragment. I grew up in the NW so fancy names weren’t too common. We’d call our grandmas “Grandma Kaurin” and “Grandma Wilson”. My children call my Mom “Grandma Kathy”, a little less formal, but the person behind the name is always so precious.
Enjoy this new season in your life, I guess you already are! :)
~Kristen
Without a doubt your definetly a “grammy-pie” , kind of gramma.:)
Blessings to your family!
What exciting news! Children are special blessings form the Lord and I will keep Ashley in my prayers for a healthy and happy pregnancy. :)
Regardless of the name that he or she calls you, I think it might be best if it’s preceeded by the word “Sugar” or “Sweet” because I’m sure you’ll be the sweetest grandma around!
Ruthann,
I am so excited for you and your family! God has chosen your family to receive this blessing from Him! I have 11 grandchilden, the 11th due to be born any day. Nine of my grandchildren call us grandma and papa, but to our Lily I am “ammie” and I love it! My grandma was my cheerleader, my teacher, someone who always loved me! I miss her very much, but I think of all the memories often.
Happy Birthday to you! I hope your special day is filled with blessings!
Blessings to you from Kansas!
Gail
Blessings to you and your family on your new grandbaby. Enjoy all the moments, take lots of pictures. My daughter is still in high school but when she becomes a mother I want to encourage her to take many handprint and footprint images as her child grows. I had a wonderful caregiver who would take these images and create holiday decorations that we have been able to enjoy each year. Take care – Kim
Ruthann: Just wanted to wish you a ‘Happy Birthday’ today!! It is also the 32rd wedding anniversary for me and my husband. A great day for celebrating! Hope everything is well with you and your family and am keeping you all in my prayers daily. Your site is such a blessing! Thank you!! Have a WONDERFUL day!!
Congratulations! We always called my Grandmas “Grandma” but I agree that the baby will probably end up choosing the name. I have one little guy who can’t say his gs, so he calls my mom “Damma”.:)
Dear Ruthann, til hamingju með afmælið ! Happy Birthday to you. Love your blogg. Blessings to Ashley and Glenn for the little baby.
Love,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
So happy to hear about that baby! CONGRATS! It will the second greatest thing you will ever hold in your arms.. The 1st your daughter, the 2nd that grandbabie, weither it a girl or boy there is no feeling in the world like it. Babies are the one true hope for the future I feel in my heart God wouldn’t continue to give us babies if there weren’t hope.
So may God bless you and your family and wrap you in his loving arms.
Dear Aunt Ruthie,
That is such wonderful news. What a Blessing! I just know that you will make such a terrific “Grandma”. I think “Grandma Ruthie” sounds just perfect. I hope my entry is not too late. Happy Birthday to you. I pray you have a most blessed day. I do not have a blog, but I have left my email address in the leave a comment area.
I like Nana~ I’m a Nana of 2 beautiful babies.
Best wishes from a grandmother of 8. Four precious boys and four precious girls. When I was about to be born the doctor told my father in the waiting room that I was not breathing. Well, I am now 64 almost 65, married with four fabulous children, four in-law children, their relatives and now 8 grandchildren. I am blessed and I know you are.
Hi! I’m late but wanted to say I’m so happy to hear about your Grandchild! Oh the sweetness CANNOT be described! I am Nonna to ten beautiful, precious blessings!
Recently someone told me of the Grandma name “DANDY” and I thought is was so cute!
Hugs from on e Nonna to another!

Oh Ruthie….just got here to read your wonderful news! I know exactly how you feel; I had my first grandchild 10 years ago (could that possibly be…where has the time gone?!) I’ve had two more since then…now our “baby girl” has started to school….Its so wonderful….I’m called “Nana”; I was asked which name I’d prefer and thats what I chose…Your little one may just find her own name for you…..Congratulations….you’re going to love it! When is she due?
I’m sorry I’m late with a comment to congratulate you Ruthie but it is heart felt non-the less. I became a first time Nonna last year so I know how exciting this time is for you!
My husband is Italian and “Nonna” is the Italian word from grandmother. “Nonno” is the word for grand father. We chose to be called those names to keep the Italian heritage going for our grandchild and it also will be less confusing for our grandson as my daughter-in-law’s parents are Grandma and Grandpa.
Of course our grandson may chose an entirely new name for us as he grows and learns to talk ..and thta would be fine! :-)
I will keep your daughter in my prayers that she will have a good pregmancy and birth!
Congratulations!
Our grandson and only grandchild calls me Mamo and his grandfather papo. A dear friend of mine is called nonnie. I think that is Italian for grandma not sure but so darn cute. Nonnie. Congratulations. You are about to enter the twighlight zone of grandmother hood. Nothing in the world can even come close to it and enjoy it as it does fly by. Mamo aka Connie
Our grandson and only grandchild calls me Mamo (pronounced Mawmoe) and his grandfather papo.. Congratulations. You are about to enter the twighlight zone of grandmother hood. Nothing in the world can even come close to it and enjoy it as it does fly by. Mamo aka Connie
I somehow missed this post Aunt Ruthie! Just wanted to say I’ll be praying for your daughter and your tiny grandbaby. I a mom of 4 grown kiddos. I have lived for my children since I was 20 years old. Nothing could be better than being a mother…oh hold the phone. Stop the presses. Stop-drop-and roll…
Being a grandmother is above and beyond…someone said this to me and I think this best describes it…
Being a grandmother has filled a huge space in me that I didn’t realize was empty…
You’ve embarked on a sacred journey…blessings and enjoy every moment.

As I read your blog for the first time, and loved everything you were doing for Autumn, I looked at older blog posts and found that you are going to be a grandmother for the first time.
Me, too!
My story is long (I do have it posted on my blog / spiesspirit.blogspot.com), but know that God saved two very special children for me (the wait almost killed me, but His plan is always best). And now, our son and his precious wife are going to be loaned God’s most precious gift, a baby of their own.
“Our” due date is March 24, and we will find out next month if it is a boy or girl (who cares?)…not me!
BTW, we are going to be Lolli and Pops.
We will remember to pray for your family each time we pray for our little one.
It is such a breath of fresh air to see two young, sweet people expecting a blessing from above. You are such a sweet mom and give me inspiration just reading your blog. I home school 2 children that are wonderful and cheer me on daily. I cheer them on as well.
God has blessed me with finding this blog. Thanks and CONGRADULATIONS. I will pray for them and the baby.
Congratulations on your new baby-to-be! I will say a little prayer for your daughter and the wee one.
Hi Aunt Ruthie,
I miss your song on your playlist…….Harry Belafonte’s “Where Are You Going?”…..that was such a beautiful post and would love to hear the song when visiting again. Thanks!
We have a sweet friend in Texas named, Winnie. Her grandchildren call her Honey. Since that’s what her husband always calls her, the grandchildren picked up on it. It’s so sweet to hear a little voice calling Honey.
A little late in wishing you congratulations, but CONGRATULATIONS!!! Have you decided on what name you want to be called yet?
Now that it is nearly a month since finding out… you’re still thrilled, aren’t you??!! I remember how everything shifted when I found out I’d be a grandmother. When my daughter told me the other grand chose “Gigi” and the g-grands were Granny and Nana, I said that’s great! I was hoping I would be the only “Grandma” because I felt like there were more things and books and poems and stories, etc. that had the name “Grandma” and that it would help sorta solidify who I would be to my little ones — I’m the only LONG DISTANCE grand they have and I’d need all the help I could get! It has been fun sending my little 3 and 1.5 year old boys the occasional book about “Grandma.” My husband is “Grandpa” but they can only say “Geempa” which is a true heart-melter.
It is a time of special heart-meditation that you will never have ever again — the months of considering deeply what you will be known as for generations to come!! Love you and may the Lord bless your ministry to women!
(BTW, as we were on our semi-annual trip to fish in Branson last week and while wandering around looking at gorgeous PEEK autumn color, I was wondering where your house is and thinking it would be fun to just march up to your front door and hug you big!)
Don’t know how I stumbled upon your website… but what a delight! The music is divine and takes me back in time… Kudos to you for such a precious site. I’ll look forward to reading it all when time permits. Congratulations G-Ma! It’s the best! I have 3.
Hugs,
Jill
Oh, I am so excited to find your blog!!!! We visited your beautiful subdivision and met your Brother in law (maybe it was your brother)! We fell in love with your neighborhood and want to move there if our real estate sells here. What “Grand” news you have! I am not good at all with names but my own two “Grands” were Grandma (my Dad’s Mom) and Grandmother (my Mom’s Mom)…and “Grand” was a perfect fit for both them. Hope to visit you “farm” subdivision in a few weeks when we visit the area. Donna
Just found your blog and I am so loving it!!!
I too am expecting my first precious granddaughter in March,
Blessing to all :)
Hi, I just wanted to say how much I love your site. I live in the Ozarks to, in Nixa, MO. Thank you so much for putting in the time to bring joy to people like me. Talk to you soon, Pattie
Congratulations on the grand baby! I am posting this late, so I don’t know if you have picked your grandma name yet, but I wanted to share with you that my children call my mother-in-law “Bella” and we think it is precious! My nephew called her “la-la” when he was very little and everyone loves their Bella! My nephew calls his other grandma “Deedee”. Such fun!
Oh, one more to share! Everyone calls my husband’s grandma “Mim”. He came up with it when he was very little because he would call her “mom” (since that is what he heard his mom say when they visited!) and one day she told him he couldn’t call her mom so he said “okay, can I call you mim?” And it stuck! So cute! 30 years later, and they are still Mim and Pa!
Congratulations!! I am very excited for you. I wish you nothing but blessings in this new year. I have just one question for you Aunt Ruthie: where did you find the pearls of wisdom necklace? It is absolutly beautiful!! I would love to have one for myself and gift a few special moms in my life with one. Thank you and God’s blessings to you and yours.
When some students are stuck with argumentative term paper accomplishing, therefore I will recommend to buy essay papers from some good classification essay service in such situation.
I opine that to get the credit loans from creditors you should have a good reason. But, one time I’ve got a commercial loan, just because I was willing to buy a building.
Dear Aunt Ruthie! You’re blog has been such a joy to just sit down at the end of the nigiht when the children (ALL7! ) are in tucked in their beds and sneak a few moments of happiness! God’s light shines through you, no doubt! Thank you loving Him so much!
I want to share my parents “names” with you that we love… they are my kids’… Gabby and Poppy! I love to hear them call them that. It just sounds so jolly!
The other thing that is fun is just to wait and have them call you grandma. Because it almost never comes out that way and they end up calling you something so special and unique! My husband’s grandmother has always been “Bada” (sounds like Boduh with a short vowel sound o) because that was how grandma came out and it is so great! My mother in law is “Didi” because that was how my oldest started saying “Grandms Diana” and it stuck.
I highly recommend that! It is FUN , special and you NEVER know what you’re gonna get! Thanks and God Bless You! Kim
