A sweet gal named Linda (hi Linda!) asked me to do a post about grooming, well seeing how much I love lipstick… so much I want to marry it….I thought it would be fun! Here is Linda’s request:
Anonymous said…
Thank you for your beautiful blog! A question… about grooming. You always looks so gorgeous. Do you always dress-up at home even if you know no-one will visit and you’re not going out? What is the bare minimum of make-up, haircare, jewelry, shoes, perfume, quality/style of clothing you’d use on a ‘home-day’? What extras do you use if having visitors or going shopping? Love a post on this! :) Kindest regards, Linda.
Thank you Linda for the oh-so-delightful compliments! I am certainly not an expert on beauty, but from one gal to all you adorable gals in blog-land, I am happy to share my thoughts.
I always…as in everyday….shower, wash my hair, style it, and put makeup on and get powdered and perfumed. I like to start the day fresh as a daisy. Anyone who knows me, knows that is just how I am. Unless I am in bed with the flu or a really bad cold, you can bet this Mother Hen is going to be all dolled up down to her lipstick! I do not feel completely dressed and ready to start the day until I do.
Even if I am staying home, I put my makeup on. It’s a pick-me-up, it tells my brain I am ready to face the world. If I don’t, I feel washed out and sloppy, sleepy and slouchy (is that a word?) and to be honest…without makeup, I look downright pale and plain, sort of like a potato. Well, eee-gads! I don’t want to walk around looking like a potato for goodness sake! How embarrassing! I need that sassy splash of color on my cheeks and lips and light up my eyes with eye shadow, liner and mascara. Hey, I don’t want anyone calling me Mrs. Potato Head!
“If you feel sloppy on the outside, before long it’s going to get on the inside. Take time to look your best.” ~ Joel Osteen
As for my shoes, in the winter I wear Ugg boots, clogs, cowboy boots, or slip-on’s. Summertime I wear mules (slip-on open-toed shoes) or sandals. I don’t wear running shoes unless I am working out. Sketchers has some cute sport shoes in black that I will wear if I’m going to be doing a lot of walking. But mostly I wear slip-on’s.
When I have housework or cooking to do, I always put on an apron which gives me that same kind of perky dolled-up feeling. Suddenly, I am June Cleaver and I feel motivated to get my home tidy, scrubbed clean and smelling sweet. It sends a message to my family, that I take my job as homemaker seriously and joyfully! I want to be at my best as I strive to bless my home and family.
I remember going over to a friends house when I was around 13, and the mom looked like she just rolled out of bed at three in the afternoon (maybe she did), the house was dark, stale and messy. Joy-bells did not ring in her home. It was a sad, lonely, place. I think about the memories of home and mother, that my friend will have to live with for the rest of her life. It breaks my heart. I want my kids to remember love in their home, surrounded by laughter, fun, good food and glowing simple beauty, in a clean, well-lived-in home. I want them to remember that I took pride in my job as Mother Hen taking care of her chicks, and the way I presented myself, in a pleasant way, to them and the world.
“How we put ourselves together can be very revealing as to what kind of person we are.” ~ Susan Branch, Artist/Author
My mom (Esther ) was the same way ( she is on the right, in the front row wearing the darling white linen dress with the voluptuous rose on her shoulder. Don’t you just love how these ladies look? So very ladylike, feminine and proper! This gaggle of gals were from her Deed-A-Day Church group. They got together to do good-deed projects for those in need and for church events). She never went out of the house unless she looked “presentable”.
Even at home she always looked beautiful and smelled sweet. In fact, as she tidied up each room, a hint of Estee Lauder-Youth Dew fragrance would ribbon it’s way throughout the house. An aroma that said “mom’s home”.
So, like mother like daughter. I don’t leave the house looking disheveled or plain like a potato (I don’t have anything against potatoes mind you, I love to eat them, I just don’t want to look like one). If the barn need paintin’….paint it! My barn gets painted everyday!
You know the old saying “you only have one chance to make a good first impression”, I know that people treat us in a much more positive manner when we show that we care enough to dress clean and nice, comb our hair, and put a smile on our face. It’s a sign of self-respect. (And a little lipstick never hurts! But that’s just me!) Plus, a wisp of rosy blush, mascara and lip-gloss really does make a gal look younger, I like that.
As a teenager, I sometimes slept with those hard pink rollers in my hair…ouch! Those were the days before hair blowers and electric curlers or curling irons. (Am I revealing my age?!!) Anyhoo, after hearing me whine about it, my mom would say “Well, sometimes it hurts to be pretty”. She was right.
As far as jewelry goes…one of my favorite things to put on is a single strand of creamy pearls! I love them! They are always classic, and adds such simple beauty to whatever you are wearing! It polishes up a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, or a cute top and a skirt.
Of course, true beauty starts on the inside. A gal can be blessed with exquisite natural beauty, which she enhances with top of the line cosmetics, and the latest fashion, and a sassy hairdo, but if she opens her mouth and bitter or vulgar words spill out, revealing the condition of her heart, her glow quickly fades, her dazzle fizzles, her beauty is lost.
Take this to heart, all of you cutie-pies…..

P.S Happy Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful mama’s!
Ruthann – I loved this post! Great advice, especially to the young moms who might think “why bother?”. You gave them a good many wise reasons why they should! I, for one, would love to see your pretty little vanity table, too. (I just know it’s pretty!). I love displaying everyday objects (like cosmetics, perfumes, etc.) artfully, and I’d love to see how you have arranged yours. I’m always delighted to see a new post from Warm Pie, Happy Home pop up on my bloglines!

I LOVED this post, Ruthann! I’m feeling so inspired right now…I have not been doing a great job in this area lately, thank you for the ideas and encouragement. I especially liked the part about mom making the home a joyful place to be. Thank you for sharing and also for the pictures of your lovely mom!

Ruthann – GREAT POST!! I have been married for 26 years and have always, always done this and my husband loves it. You said in a previous post that you wanted to be a southern belle – well that’s part of being one. Which by the way, did you know that Springfield, Missouri is considered part of the south – not the midwest as Kansas City and St Louis are. So, you really ARE a belle. Anyway, this is a great lesson for all ladies to follow. The only thing wrong with this post is that you didn’t put any pics up of YOU!! We love to see your pretty face!!

Oh this is so true. I don’t do it every day (the make-up) but I should. When I do I just feel fantastic. Thanks for the great post you always have such inspiring words.
Love this blog!!!
Have a fantastic Mother’s Day.

Loved this post also!! I do have a question though…I’ve noticed lately that every lipstick or lipgloss I buy seems to disappear in minutes. Do you have a favorite?
Great post. I love the way you express yourself. Many women feel if they are home all day, they don’t need to look good. Not everybody needs to get “all made up” but should at least take care of themselves with daily grooming routines to look presentable to their families. Why do we save our old clothes to wear around the house letting our loved ones see us in them. Funny sometimes I do that and now I’m wondering why. We seem to leave the good stuff for others rather than those most important to us. Like anything else, it should become a habit that we do daily. You seem to have perfected it with your little “makeup room”. I can just picture you in the morning. By the way, are you saying you take “two” showers, one in the morning and one in the evening, maybe I am mistaken. Anyway, we should always try to look our best no matter what and I must admit I have dashed out of the house sometimes without giving that a second thought to makeup or hair. You have given me words to think about. Thanks for your blog. I truly love reading it. Keep up the good work.
Answers to questions:
my lipstick choice is Estee Lauder-Pure color-Plum Fizz and I layer other colors on top of that depending on what I am wearing. I also like Revlon-Cherries In The Snow. My most favorite lip color is hard to find. I can only get it at the perfumestaion.com it is the Mistique Cream Color palette #1. I love it. I also use a lip pencil–very important! Mine is Maybelline Moisture Extreme–the color–Merlot.
Also, Yes I usually take two Hot showers. One in the morning to get clean -wash hair etc. and the one at night to relax (I wear a shower cap). I hope all of this isn’t TMI!
What a great post!!! I am going to read it again. I have let myself go on days when I am not going anywhere…I shower and dress, but no make up and no curling iron. You are correct in the “feel” you get! You have a wonderful blog. I am so glad I found you…which by the way was through Copperswife’s link to your incredible pantry!
Hi Ruthann,
I can’t beleive your house it is so beautiful it looks like Disneyland!
from Sally
Ruthann you are adorable! And so wise!
I went this last year without makeup due to a cornea transplant (I just didnt want makeup near my new eye even though the eye dr said it was probably ok), and truly there is a difference in how you feel when you don’t wear makeup.
So amen, sista! I believe!
Ruthann,I have just recently discovered your little “gem” of a blog and I am thrilled that I did! It is now one of my top favorite blogs to visit! You are a great source of inspiration to so many of us, and we appreciate the hard work you put in your blog. Each post you do is such a wonderful new treat to read! BTW, I whole-heartedly agree, a girl has got to have her lipstick :o)
What fun, Ruthann! I don’t always follow your excellent advice, but certainly ought to. Love the music and the graphics and the scriptures. Thanks for another terrific post!
Miss Ruthann, this is the second post that I have had the privilege of reading just after it’s posting. I loved everything you had to say and you have made me feel better about my choice to stay home and you’ve made me realize that I need to do a little bit to take care of me and it isn’t selfish, it’s a gift to my family. Thank You. Now, any advice on how to create a wonderful master bedroom???

Ruthann, Ruthann, Ruthann, Thank you for so thoroughly and delightfully answering my question! What a joy your posting was to read, full of enthusiasm and wit. How wonderful to experience the pleasure daily and be able as wives and mothers to immerse ourselves in our exquisitely feminine occupation of housewife! I love it and always have! I very much appreciate the time and effort you expended to bring us ladies such a wonderful inspiring read! Guess where my daughter’s taking me tonight? She’s coming over to drive me to the jewellry shop for a Mother’s Day present to look for …. pearls! I have and use lots of luscious lipsticks but I’ve been aching for a string of pearls.. all those beautiful pictures and articles of yours haven’t helped.:)(I’ll have to watch my typos, grammar and spelling because one never knows when their ‘comment’ will be featured at the beginning of a beautiful article. How humbling.. so very kind of you.)Blessings to you, love from Linda. Australia.

I loved this post. I love to wear perfume and makeup and I know that my Husband appreciates it when I do. I think I had better go and take a shower and get that make up on right now.
GOD Bless,

Well, Ruthann, I just found your blog two days ago, and I am sure I am going to visit often! You are very uplifting! I am a blog minimalist, but I am making room on my list and time in my day to read yours!
On my Gosh, Ruthann, you look just like your mother! She is so beautiful, you really have taken after her style. I love this blog. I have worked in the beauty industry for 25 years and honestly, it doesn’t take alot of effort to put on lipstick, a little blush, a spray of perfume… it at least looks like you care! My mom, God rest her soul, had 6 children and was a stay-at-home mom and she loved to look nice for my dad. I know it always wasn’t easy with 6 little ones, but it made her feel good about herself. Thank you and Happy Mothers Day.
Theresa
Amen Sister! I don’t step out of this house without lipstick! By retelling your experience visiting a friends house as a teen, you have really inspired me to be very conscience of the “feel” of our home. LOVE your blog!
I forgot one thing though…..how do you stay so thin with all of that pie around? :)
Oh, I just enjoy your blog so much! I am feeling a little schlumpy today and having a hard time getting started. Thanks for the pick-me-up – for my sake and of course, my family’s sake.
Thank you, Ruthann, for inspiring us. I am hoping for more writings and pictures, and have read through all of your archives. I’ve tried your tip of finding things throughout the house to decorate (moved some things to the mantle), and am trying to be sweet to my family, concious of their future memories. Happy Mother’s Day!
What a cute post, Ruthann! I just love you to bits!! :o) Your mother is….gaaawww-geous (gorgeous)! All of those women are. I wish, wish, wish I could have been a young woman during those days. Look at those dresses, and the gloves…oh my stars! And yes, that flower on your mother’s shoulder…simply beautiful! Thank you, Ruthann for always having the best, most encouraging posts!
Your posts are a hoot! I’m so glad I found you. Please keep writing to inspire all of us moms who truly desire to make our homes warm, comfortable, happy places.
Ruthann – Great Post! You are just precious and a wonderful example to us all! :O) I loved your comment about joy bells! What a great term. As wives and mommas – we do set the tone in our homes don’t we?!
xoxo Cat
Great post! I’ve gotta have my lipstick too.
Cathy
Ruthann, I’ve been reading and this is the first time I’ve posted a comment. You remind me so much of my mother-in-law. She could have written this word for word! I’ve always admired her and she would NEVER NEVER EVER go anywhere (even her own house) without full makeup and lipstick, especially lipstick. I long for bygone days of the 40’s and 50’s people always looked so presentable. First impressions are everything, thanks for the good advice. Donna
Oh i couldn’t agree with you more Ruthann..when you have makeup on, you feel so much better..
I adore the photo of your mum and her friends. They look so elegant and feminine..love the gloves! I wish we could go back to those days more…
Happy Mother’s Day to you..
luv Ann…from Australia..
Hi Ruthann,
Love the sentiments expressed here! You so wonderfully put into words my feeling about not looking like a potato.
And I too love to make our home a joyful place – though my prim style is not as feminine as some other styles, I hope it is warm and inviting.
I am adding a link to your blog and hope to visit often!
hugs, Linda
I loved this post! I too, alway, put on my makeup first thing in the morning & NEVER leave the house w/out it!!
I say everygirl needs to have lipgloss and a great piece of jewlery to start everyday! It is so great to look good for your honey! It keeps the romance alive and well, and then makes a loving home for your kids! I always enjoy reading your blog! Blessings on you and look forward to future posts!

Wonderful post. Keep America Beautiful!
I totally agree with your post, Ms. Ruthann. I always say lipstick and pearls never go out of style, even with jeans. Being a southern lady, posture is always a top priority along with smiling a lot. When you fix your face everyday and smile no one ever says, “Oh dear, you look terrible, are you sick? And I always wear my best, why save it for a special occasion. Every day you wake up breathing is special. Happy Mothers Day, RoseMarie
Happy Mother’s Day Ruthann :)

Just checking in to see if you are okay after the storms last night. I know there were some nasty ones on the AR/MO line. They missed us again, but came very close.
What a wonderful post, Ruthann. I love coming here to your blog and reading your words of wisdom. You are such and inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing the picture of your mom. She is a beautiful lady.
I wear make-up and perfume every day too, and I agree, it really does make a huge difference. It makes me feel so much better about myself to know that I took the time to “pretty up” for my loved ones.
Great post…but are you OK after the storms? I knew they were up in your area but not sure just how close. Praying you all are safe and had a wonderful Mother’s Day!
Blessings!
Patti in Texas
Just found your blog-love it! I certainly needed that pep talk.
Thank you!
Sista Ruthann,
Great advice! One of the things I remember most about my Mama was every morning upon waking up she dressed in a pretty dress, put on her pearls, or a pretty pin, did her hair, and applied powder, she didn’t wear other makeup…on special occasions a little lipstick. She did her housework, cooking, etc, dressed like a lady and oh yes, she always had bath powder on…..with fresh flowers in the house……she was indeed a Southern Lady…..Betty
I just ‘stumbled’ upon your blog and I must say–LOVE IT!! You speak my heart language…I just started a blog about a week ago and if you get a chance, stop by for a visit! You have great ideas and advice!
Blessings,
Myrna
OK, there is something sort of ironic about the fact that I spent the entire day in my jammies. I looked like I had rolled out of bed ALL DAY and when I finally took a shower, I put another pair of jammies on. Oh dear. What sort of message did I send my dear blessings today?! Thank you for the motivation to start fresh tomorrow morning!
Oh, y’all! I feel like an icky, crumb-bum! I know you’re right… and Ruthann, I really appreciate the sweet, yet honest way you’ve approached this subject. I’m old enough to know better and my momma certainly taught me well, but what can I say? I’m an atist, living in West Texas and most days I’m painting. My studio is unairconditioned and I usually get very messy! Paint all over me. I do wear cute aprons…does that count? Any suggestions for me?
Oh how I have missed this blog! It is wonderful to be back blogging! Just wanted to pop in and say hello!
Hugs,
Robyn
Oh boy-eeee!!! Thanks for stopping by. I feel I’ve been visited by a pretty princess!… and thanks for exempting me from perfection! I can breathe a sigh of relief….but I must confess. I did get up this morning and followed your routine, and I do believe it gave me a little phycological ‘sparkle’! Thanks for the ministry you provide for so many women. I love you and your blog!
OK RuthAnn, I went looking for my lipstick and couldn’t find it, so I went out today and bought another. I guess it might be time to put some paint on the old barn again! Thanks for the inspiration, and I hope you and your loved ones are safe through the storms in MO. Blessings….Kathy L
Absolutely wonderful post. I LOVE this blog! Someday I hope to have real pearls… :)Blessings to you!
Hi RuthAnn,
Your post inspired me today to get out of the jammies and “fix up”.;o)
I am a lover of pie also. No one really gets me when it comes to the pie thing. I truly love making pie and eating homemade pie. hehe I love all of your posts. So entertaining. You are officially on my favorites list.
Drop by and say Hi when you get the chance
Kelly
Ruthann – PLEASE get this blog published in a book! I will be the first one to buy it, I promise!!! It is everything I am ‘hungry for’: spiritualy, creatively, physically (the recipies – oh my!!)
I have signed up for the feed!

Hi Ruthann,
Found your blog through Cara, Deep Fried Apple Pies!
Wonderful blog, you are a kindred spirit for sure, I have put on my makeup and lipstick everyday of my marriage, 25 yrs. now! I look good, smell good and have good food and a clean house for the hubby when he gets home!
Thank you for this great post, you are inspiring others to be Godly wives…
Donna Lynn
Hi, Ruthann! This is my second comment on this post! Just had to say that I carved out a twenty dollar bill from the family budget this week and splurged on a Benefit lipstick in Sugar Cookie! It’s going to remind me that all the words coming past those lips must be Sweet As Sugar! You add a (glossy) smile to my day!
How is it that everything you post fills me with such inspiration?! You are full of wisdom and beauty.
Hey I just HAD to say how much I love your blog and YOU!!! xoxox I just feel at home and so warm and welcomed by you. I stumbled across your blog one day and it was the “hygiene” post, I loved it! We have alot of similarities. Great job, and I check daily for a new post :-p I too am a farmgirl via MJF and just have found a home away from home in your blog. What an inspiring lady you are and a lovely family! Keep up the wondrous work! xoxo
I cannot believe I stumbled upon your wonderful blog!! When I saw the photo of Elvis (aka Tony???)I realized that you were in Branson. Upon further reading, I read how you ended up in Branson. We are really thinking about doing the same thing! Please email me as I have lots of questions about this possible “venture”!
Thank you so much,
Lori, in Texas

I’m new to your blog and loved htis post. I too try to look nice every day. all I wear as far as makeup is mascara and coverup under the eyes. But even that makes a difference in wether or nnot I look like a washed out potato:)
Hi. I am fairly new to your blog, and just sat down tonight to start reading it from the beginning. I really love your blog, and I really, really love this post. I am 28 years old and overweight. I never really feel pretty (though my husband thinks I’m beautiful). I am going to follow the words you have written here and make myself up every day. I’m hoping this will help my self image improve so I will be motivated to improve myself in other ways too.
Thank you for the wonderful, inspiring words you have written. God bless.
Ruth Ann,
I was just digging through your archives and found this post. Wonderful!!! I, though, am one of those that really hates wearing make up. Since I was a teen-ager, I wore it, because it was the thing for teen-age girls to do, but once I left the “work outside the home” world, I ditched the makeup. I do love lip balm, guess that’s my lipstick, eh?
Lovin your blog!
Stunningly beautiful post. I recently discovered your blog and have been coming often as it lifts my spirits. Thank you so much.
Hi Ruthann
It is so wonderful to visit your site and learn so much about loving your home and having Jesus first. I love to decorate and cook. I made your pumkin crunch bars. They were so good. My husband loved them!! I also gave the recipe to a girfriend at church who made them for her progressive tea. They were a hit too!! Thank you, girfriend and mentor. Love Kathy
I just read this for the first time – long after you wrote it, dear – and it has really touched and challenged me! Thanks for the words of wisdom and encouragement, which I have taken to heart!
Good mornin’ Ruthann,
I would just liketo say how very much I love to read your blog. I have just recently found you, and I am enjoying all your older posts as well. Trying to get all caught up should keep me busy for a while. THANKS again for just being you. xoxoxo Have good days!
Dearest Aunt Ruthie,
I just loved how you talked about it being so important that the Mom is at hope with her kids and I feel the same way exactly! I was born in 1958 and my Mom was always there for us.Times were tough and my Dad was self-employed. I had 3 other siblings and mom made some of our clothes, especially the girls and 99% of our gifts were hand made by Mom. She put so much love and attention into our gifts, and they were very special! We had a garden and lived out in the country. My Mom taught me everything I know domestically and am so proud of that. I just wish there was a way to pass on to todays young ladies how important it is to be a stay at home Mom and what type of people their children become. My secret closet wish….. is to have the guts to wear a cute apron out in public and not be imbarassed. I’m not one for drawing attention to myself, so maybe I’ll just save it for at home and enjoy wearing it there. P.S. I just LOVE your Blog!! It’s one of my very favorite! Right up there with “Just a Pinch Recipe Club”! Have a Super Day! :)
I love this post. I am a stay at home mom (I work part-time while the kids are in school), and it is so easy to just stay in my pj’s all day…changing to go to work then right back again. I do feel better when I get up, shower and do my make-up…this post makes me want to do it every day even if I don’t leave the house! That will be my goal. Tha.k you so much for this wonderful encouragement!
I LOVE YOUR SITE AUNT RUTHIE. I HOPE SOME OF OUR NEW MOMMIES WILL TAKE IT TO HEART. IT IS DIFFUCULT SOME DAYS TO LOOK PUT TOGETHER ESPECIALLY FOR A WORKING MOM. I BELIEVE IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR OUR CHILDREN TO SEE A PRETTY MOMMY. MY BEST COMPLIMENT CAME FROM MY 3 YEAR OLD GRANDSON WHEN HE SAID GRANDMA YOUR SO PRETTY. MY HEART MELTED. THANKS AGAIN AUNT RUTHIE ANOTHER WONDERFUL PIECE.
I just LOVE your blog! Your words are so encouraging! I always try to look nice for my husband, and smell nice, as well. I just feel PUT TOGETHER when I try. You are an inspiration to me – thank you for you uplifting words! Ana
What’s up friends, its great piece of writing concerning tutoringand entirely explained, keep it up all the time.
That is really fascinating, You’re a very professional blogger.
I’ve joined your rss feed and look ahead to seeking more of your wonderful post.
Additionally, I have shared your web site in my social networks
Hi Aunt Ruthie, I just love this post and it has hit me hard. I am now retired and have been very lazy about getting myself “fixed” up in the morning. I have found myself wearing less than desirable clothing (things I save to hang around in) and never do I put on any makeup although I dearly need it. I comb my hair and brush my teeth but that’s where it stops. I guess I just get lazy and feel I’m not going anywhere and no one is coming over so why bother. Wow am I missing the point. Thank you for always being an encourager to us women and for waking me up. I am going to try to do better. Love u for your sweet spirit.
