Howdy-do Sugar Pies! Well, I’ve been in a cowgirl kinda mood lately! I want to kick up my boots and get out in the long awaited sunshine! We’ve had sooooo much rain here in the Ozarks! The storms have been almost non-stop! Whenever we hear the deep rumble of thunder in the distance we all scramble to turn off our computers so if our house is hit by lightening all of our data won’t fry like a heap of chicken sizzlin’ in a hot skillet! Thank the Lord, the sun is shining! Yes-sir-ee, the bright and clear Missouri skies have got me in the mood to do a little re-decoratin’, yummy bakin’ and wearin’ some fun Praire-Chic style duds…all with a Western flair! I can’t wait to show y’all! Yee Haw!!
Ain’t this little Sugar Dumplin’ purty in this little chocolate-pie-brown checkered blouse?
It reminds me of a country picnic! I like that it’s modest and still feminine and so AdOrAblE! This little number is from Sheplers Western Wear…and I hope to have it hangin’ in my closet soon!
Prairie Chic is so sweet! I have three tops in this style. I love them! I wear a camisole underneath just to make sure nothin’s showin’ that shouldn’t be!
The lace-up back makes it even cuter! This sweet-as-pie top is from Urban Western Wear. I get a lot of my clothes from Western clothing stores.
Boot-Scootin’! That’s what I do in my Old Gringos! They’re so comfortable, I wear these pretty much every day. They are a bit pricey…but I was able to combine Birthday and Christmas money, a jar of change and store credit to bring ’em on home!
Yup, my Leopardito Old Gringo boots help me celebrate my inner cowgirl! I’ve had a thing for Country Western music and western clothing for as long as I remember. As a little girl, I can recall listening to the tunes of Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and Johnny Cash ridin’ around with my mom and siblings in our old Station Wagon back in the day.
When my hubby and I were raising our kids we spent a lot of our vacation time up in Lake Tahoe. We would spend a day horseback riding, and the other days we’d drive down to the old cowboy towns of Truckee, and Virginia City, Nevada. It was so fun to learn the history of those towns and the infamous people who stayed there.
One of our favorite places to visit was the old Cartright Homestead, The Ponderosa, from the Bonanza T.V. show.
We also enjoyed the excitement of watching a rodeo in Reno, Nevada, Bishop and Temecula California. There’s just something about American cowboy culture that I’m drawn to!
When our life took us to the Ozarks in the mid 90’s it seemed like a perfect fit as we became owners and operators the Wild West Theater. We had singing cowboys, dancing cowgirls and a horse named Buckshot. We also had the privelege of working with the legendary Son’s of the Pioneers.
These Pioneer Boys were known for cowboy songs such as Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Cool Water and Whoppee Ti Yi Yo. Ya Hooo! They put on a great show!
When the Sons of the Pioneers first got started back in the day, Roy Rogers, the king of the cowboys, was the lead singer of the group. I had the privilege once of meeting Roy’s beautiful cowgirl wife Dale Evans…that experience was a treat sweeter than the sugar cube she fed to her horse Buttermilk! What a dear lady she was!
“It’s the way you ride the trail that counts” ~Roy Rogers
As I was writing this blog post, I sat back and was struck by all of the goodness that the Lord has blessed me with. The wonderful people that I’ve met and the places I’ve enjoyed and my wonderful family, and now being able to share it with the most wonderfully, darlin’ girls in all the land…you my adorable Sugar Pies! I was reminded of Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Boy howdy! That is true! God is so good!
Come on now Sugars let’s gitty-up to the farmhouse so’s I can show ya my little Cowgirl-Chic decorating touches…
An old west lantern lights the way to our front door…
The Texas Star Design was the logo for our Wild West Theater. We chose it because it represented part of our history here in the Ozarks. One of my favorite phrases is “Don’t mess with Texas!”, but ya gotta say it with a southern drawl, out of the side of your mouth…that makes it more fun! Try it! See? Ain’t that fun?!!
My mama-in-law recently gave me this old wooden horse saddle form…and since I was in that “cowgirl mood”, I decided to showcase it on my entry sideboard. It sure would be fun to know it’s history!
I went “shopping” in my house for things that would go with my western theme. I found things that I already had to create this new “old west” look. With a background of white-washed barn shutters I added a pair of vintage frames, an old wall calendar that I found months ago for $12 at an antique store, (I just tacked it behind the larger frame), a very old pitcher …from the cabin in Idyllwild, California that my hubby grew up in… filled with creamy roses, a crowing rooster and a pair of my son J.J’s old cowboy boots.
Here’s cowboy J.J. wearing those same boots! What a character that J.J. was (and is!) Oh! Where O where did those years go!!
Do y’all remember on my last blog post I showed you this green scalloped trim? It was used in my Easter decorating…now it’s on the mantle. I’m sure it will keep traveling from room to room!
Now, about that little cowboyJ.J. …he’s all grown up! Here he is with his Fiance’ Tiffany posing for their Engagement pictures. I loved that Tiffany chose a ranch to get their photos taken! She loves cowgirl stuff too…most importantly, she’s the perfect match for J.J.
They met in High School. They recently finished College. J.J. with a Business degree and Tiffany with a Teaching degree.
He treats her like a queen.
They love the Lord.
They’re adorable together.
They make each other laugh.
When J.J. saw this “horse” he jumped on top of it and decided to go for a “ride”! Whoa Nellie! Yee haw!
That’s my boy…cowboy J.J…and his cowboy sweetheart! He’s a real hoot ‘n’ holler! I think he would make the best Rodeo clown! lol
Their wedding day is in June…just around the corner!! Woo hoo!
Last, but not least on this “Trail-ride” of a blog post…
How about some hearty Cowboy Cookies with a nice cold glass of milk fresh from the dairy!
These Cowboy Cookies come from the kitchen of a true Texan…none other than the former first lady herself…Mrs. Laura Bush! She won a contest with this recipe that Family Circle Magizine put on.
This recipe makes a wagon load of cookies! The dough started to overflow before I was finished adding all of the ingredients! I had to transfer it to a bigger bowl!
If you don’t want to use up all the cookie dough in one big batch, you can form a log, wrap in wax paper and freeze it. Then when you want a some fresh baked cookies, you just slice and bake!
The instructions call for a 1/4 cup scoop for each cookie…we’re talkin’ big Ol’ Texas size cowboy cookies! My ice cream scoop was perfect!
Come ‘n’ get it!They came out perfect after baking them for 16 minutes. They are delicious! I think you can get very creative with this dough by adding some dried cranberries, and maybe substituting one of the three cups of Chocolate chips for Butterscotch chips. It would be fun to try some new combinations! It’s a hearty cookie, full of flavor and the perfect combo of crunchy and chewy!!
“It’s the face powder that get’s a man interested, but it’s the baking powder that keeps him home.” ~ Gene Hackman

Howdy from Texas Aunt Ruthie! Loved seeing all your great photos and how the “old west” inspired you to decorate through out your lovely home. You made my day seeing the photo of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. That singing cowboy was one of my all time favorites. Thanks for taking time to make us all smile with this great western theme post. Your the best!
Howdy Aunt Ruthie!! I love the engagement pics, thanks for sharing them. It is nice to see another romantic setting, other than the beach. That pretty little chocolate brown checkered top, made me want pie. LOL, speaking of pie; I wish you sold some of those yummy looking pies that you make. Way back when I first found your blog, I thought it was a website to some country restaurant/cafe/diner. Anyhoo, it is always a pleasure to read your blog; thank you. You always brighten my day, and inspire me; even when I don’t need it. ;)

I am always excited when my “in” box shows you have a new post. They never fail to bless my heart. The pictures of your son and his bride-to-be are the sweetest! How wonderful they are so in love and have found each other to share this life together. May God bless them and God bless you for sharing your heart. Hugs, Victoria Lynn
Aunt Ruthie, Love the pictures of the soon to be newlyweds. They make a great couple. Love your blog and enjoy you also on Facebook. Thank you for the great tour and the Cowboy cookies,my little cowboy will be 37 in June and I know he will love the cookies. Hope you will post pictures of the wedding. Happy Mothers day Aunt Ruthie and may God bless you all.
Aunt Ruth – Your blog posts always make my day. You are right, there are lots of blogs to visit out there, and YOURS is one of my absolute favorites. Could be that you and I both live in the great state of Missouri! Might be that I love, love LOVE your decorating style and so enjoy all the pictures of your BEAUTIFUL HOME. Possibly, all the good cookin’ you do and recipes you share. Although, the fact that we’re both mamas and you do a lot of braggin’ on your kids might have something to do with it. Or maybe, just maybe, that fact that we BOTH love the Lord Jesus with ALL our hearts! Your are a bright spot in my day Aunt Ruthie! One of these days I’m just gonna have to drive up to your house, knock on the door, and say “Hi Aunt Ruthie, it’s Robbin from Down On The Farm” and I just stopped by to make your acquaintance in person!!! Have a blessed, blessed weekend! And we’ll be expecting a big long post full of lots of pictures of that little cowboy’s wedding now, ya hear????
Hi there Aunt Ruthie – omg my goodness this post just made me want to hoot-n-holler and run out to find me a coyboy, lol! Love your sweet family, and how you all make us fell welcome in your home – even from all the way over here in Baltimore Maryland :):)
Happy Mother’s Day toy ou too – my “baby” is 24 now and all grown up. I sure do miss him – but I also love being with my hubby one-on-one. Life is sweet and I don’t want to miss a single drop!
Take care and God Bless – now get ready for that wedding – what are you wearin????
I am going to have to wear my cowgirl boots today in honor of you! I love the quote about the face powder brings them in and the baking powder keeps them home :) What a charming blog post, again. I love how you add the Lord into everything and how inspiring I feel after spending time on your blog. Sometimes I just let your music play while I tidy up the room. Thanks- and I can’t wait to read your adventures in Mommyhood :)-
Lillian J. Banks
As always – you inspire, delight and bring it into perspective! God really has blessed you – with a beautiful home, beautiful family, beautiful memories….. but, He also blessed you with a willing heart to share with others. Thank you God for giving Aunt Ruthie her writing talent & love for others!
Loved all the pics – I have an inner cowgirl too. And, my daughter’s kindergarten program this year was “The Kindergarten Round-up” – it was adorable. She of course “HAD” to have new boots, hat, shirt AND jeans & belt – the ones she already had wouldn’t do, of course. LOL
God Bless & KEEP writing!
howdy from kansas!!!
sure like your blog….sooooooo neat.
may your son and future d-i-l have a very blessed and happy marriage! congrats to all!
may you have a terrific Mother’s Day.
God richly bless you,
d
Your pictures, like always, are wonderful! Thanks for sharing your life, decor, family and your favorite books with us.
Love your blog! Your use of mostalgia and fantasy (as with this cowgal theme), inspire me to create a wholesome, happy and Godly environment for my family. As we are “bombarded” with tragic news that I can do little about, I find that my efforts to create a refuse and a reprieve are even more important. It’s true that I can’t control the world, but I CAN make home a loving and fun place!!! Thanks for your inspiration!
Hello there Aunt Ruthie, so excited to see you’ve posted today. Love reading your posts. They’re almost like perusing through a magazine. You spend so much time making them chuck full of fun. Love your cowgirl cutie clothes, loved your “little” JJ pictures, the cowboy cookies…must make those, and then your cowgirl decor. Love it all. Hoping you have a great Mother’s Day with all those cowkiddos of yours :)
Love the pic’s of J.J. and his bride to be. They really are a sweet looking couple.
I also love his little cowboy boots being used as decoration.
The time *really* does go fast, doesn’t it? I have two children in their late teens and two that are 9 and 6. I find myself holding on so tightly to those little ones and not trying to force them to grow up quicker like I think I may have done with my older two.
Especially my little Massimo (the 6 year old). When I think back to when I found out that I was expecting him.. oh my. I was SO upset because I wanted to “get my life back”. He and I had a rough start together and looking back, I feel so guilty about that (not that he remembers).
Now, that little boy is absolutely the light of my life and has been one of my biggest blessings. Why … I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have a 6 year old boy to love! :)
Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful pictures and stories with us. I hope that you have a super Mothers Day-you deserve it.
((Hugs))
Laura
This post was chock full of fun!! Happy Mother’s day to you, sweet Aunt Ruthie! I loved the little cowboy boots, and can’t believe you still kept those babies. I have been trying to keep all the very special little things and outfits my little ones are outgrowing so I can create a quilt from them at graduation time, but haven’t been thinking about things like shoes- well, I have some of their first shoes of course. Great reminder to keep those precious little things because I may want them someday! Oh- and I loved the part about wearing a camisole. I do the same exact thing, because it seems like immodesty is everywhere. I surely don’t want to be a part of that. I’d have to say that the brown and white top was my very favorite. Super sweet, thanks so much for sharing.
Your blog is my absolute favourite-thank you for being so encouraging. I always feel uplifted after reading it. You said once that you prayed for the people who left comments. I would really value prayer. I so want to continue to be a homemaker but things are getting tight and I need to think of a way to help out but still work from home if at all possible. ANY advice gratefully received!
I am fortunate to be a TEXAS girl and so loved seeing our own Laura Bush’s cookies in your newsletter. They have been a favorite in our home for years. Making them tonight actually. You are adding one very pretty “filly” to your family! congratulations
Greetings from the Ks-Ok border;
I have a question about the cookies–you list both baking soda and baking powder. I only see where you put the baking soda in. Do you put the powder in at the same time? I haven’t used both soda and powder in a recipe and am wondering……………
Happy Mother’s Day Aunt Ruthie!!! I am a cowgirl at heart. Every email I get from you brings a smile to my face, even on the darkest days!!!
To inspiring me and others to shine…that is what you do…lovely pics and congrats on gaining a new lovely family member…may your days shine as bright as they do today…
Love sitting on the back porch rocker visiting with you! Thanks for the cookies, but I would prefer a big ole glass of sweet tea being from the south! :) And aren’t those young’uns just too cute!
I always look forward to reading your blogs. I put my little one down for a nap and settle in to read what new things you have to say and to see your new, ever-changing decor! You are so inspirational. You have no idea how many woman you are touching through your site.
I so enjoy reading your blog
hope JJ and Tiffany have a beautiful weeding and a wonderful life together.
hope JJ and Tiffany have a beautiful weeding and a wonderful life together.
LOVE this post! Makes me reminisce for the days when I used to dress “country”. I did it for nearly 20 years! Then I moved to the SF Bay area, and things are a bit different around here, including my weight! UGH! But thank you for the post. Makes me also want to add some “cowgirl” touches to my home decor!
Hey! I’ll be in Branson the 14th through the 21st of this month, visiting with my family who is also going there, and we’ll be going to SDC! I can’t wait!
Have a BLESSED Mother’s Day!
I love you Aunt Ruthie! I love your taste in everything, clothes and all. I love cowboy boots too but could never wear them because they don’t fit my calves :( If they did, they’d probably be on me everyday. When I see mail from you, I get so excited, I love it here. Have a very happy and blessed Mother’s Day!
You’re the best, Aunt Ruthie! You lift my spirits each and every time I read your writing! If everybody knew about your blog, there would be no need for Prozac among housewives and mommies!
Thank you for each meticulously crafted post. They are rare and lovely, like gems.
Bought the brown checked blouse the minute I saw it! Thanks for the fashion tip. So wholesome, yet coy. Love it!
Aunt Ruthie..Your posts make my day..I love all the photos and that J.J. and his beautiful bride to be are adorable..Happy Mother’s Day to you..Also,when are we gonna get some more photos of that grandson of yours?..
Hold on thar, Aunt Ruthie, gotta shake the dust off my boots to read this share. What a beautiful couple, congrats! Your photos are wonderful & so much fun! if you will pass the cookies now, please.
Have a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend.
Marydon
Happy Mother’s day, mia cugina
… Cute pictures of JJ and Tiffany! Thanks for the inspiration to refresh the home with seasonal touches. Guess it’s time to put away the mistletoe
… fyi: real cowboy’s and cowgirls live in COLORADO! LOL
I was raised wearing little tiny red & white cowboy boots and going to the Oklahoma State Fair from a very young age. We looked at every exhibit and every animal. Had a blast and didn’t even have to ride the rides to be happy. We spent a long, full day walking through all the Fair and loved every minute of it. My grandfather “POPPY” made handmade furniture as a hobby. I own his prized First Place Champion coffee table he made in approx. 1950. Beautiful to this day! Love all the nostalgia and you sharing all the family memories and the future plans of your son & fiancee. Enjoy each and every day. I know you will !!! Betty G. in Tennessee
I just love your blog! It’s really cool!
Loved the trip down memory lane and the pics of JJ and Tiffany are priceless! And the yummy cookies and pastry books are just plain delightful looking. Lol. I think those cookies will be in the stoneybrooke oven someday real soon.
Thanks for sharing. It’s a gem post again!
I just want to thank you for the wonderful post. They are always so cheerful and help put a smile on my face… And i cant wait to bake some of those cookies…
Ruthie, You are one Kickin’ kinda gal!! Love reading your blog! Don’t know why it’s taken me so long to mosey on over but ya know how life happens sometimes. I am visiting from Stash Manicure/Sew We Quilt…ya know that sweet little gal that calls herself Madame Samm?? Somehow I can’t see her in a pair of cowgirl boots!! ha!! I need to tell her that!! She is such a special LADY and Friend!! She designed my blog out of the kindness of her sweet sweet heart!!
Anyhoo, just wanted to let ya know I’m a new follower…I like a blog that entertains and informs and you do both! I’m new to blogging and began as just a personal foray to chronicle the stories of my Big Ol Family and then WHAM**** I started meeting all these terrific ladies, became good friends with a few, and I just keep rollin’ along. I’m a small blog but have lots of fun telling my stories.
I just recently SURVIVED the storms in Alabama…tornado devastation that you can not believe..was without power for 6 days!!! Funny, how something like an F5 TORNADO packing winds of over 200 mph puts things in perspective!!
Blessings to you and yours
Happy Mother’s Day and enjoy that “little” cowpoke J.J.’s wedding!! They bring Grandchildren which makes their leaving the nest all the sweeter!
Come by for a visit…I’m not fancy like you but I would love the company!!
Gmama Jane
Love, love, love the post. Fits right in with us right here on the farm. Only thing that’s missin’ is the cows and the dirt!! We love Roy Rogers, Dale and the Sons of the Pioneers, too. And it just so happens that the Ozarks are one of our favorite places to visit.
This post just makes you feel good.
Happy Trails,
Tina
You are truly blessed to have children, and then to have children that love the Lord….how amazing! Happy Mother’s Day! Thank you so much for your wonderful blog, there is so much inspiration.
Another enjoyable post. I have a home decorated in Cowboy and Indian decor. My kitchen is decorated in chickens. Like you, I love my western blouses, boot collection, and just added Justin boots blingy flip flops. I love wearing boots because of their comfort.
Can’t wait to see the handsome couple’s wedding pics.
Have a wonderful and blessed Mother’s Day<3
I grew up in an English city – not a cowgirl kinda town but your post brought back lots of wonderful memories because my father just loved his country and western music and played it all weekend long. He also loved to watched Westerns. I’m amazed at how many songs stuck in my head that I still hum today as I wash dishes.
I think you would love Australia where I live now – people think beaches and the Opera House but go west and you get outback stations, horses, rodeos and of course, country music. I just love the sweet blouses you featured. I love my dresses and often team them with a denim jacket but if I wear jeans or a denim skirt I do like to wear a pretty blouse to feel feminine. And I’m going to try Laura Bush’s cookie recipe – will it be as good as your snickerdoodles though?!
What a wonderful post to read first thing in the mornin! I can’t believe the time and attention to detail you put into this blog and IT SHOWS! My daddy always told me as we were waxin the car together, “shine everything…its all about the details!” : )
Thank you for blessing my socks off AGAIN!!! Reminded me of wonderful days with my family in Oklahoma! Grandpa was a rodeo cowboy…till he was gored in the neck by a big ole bull…couple a stitches and he was back in the saddle again : )
I can’t wait to read your next post. I love you and appreciate all that God is doing through you Auntie Ruthie!!!!
Lotsa love to you Cowgirl Sista!!!!
How I love your posts and look forward to each and every one. They never let me down. I hope the bride and groom will allow you to show some of the wedding pictures. Thnk you for helping me start the week off with a smile on my face!
Thanks for another great post!! Thanks for the cookie recipe too. Being from Oklahoma…your post just looks like home! :)
Great post. Loved the pictures. Oh and when you heard the Bonanza music did you gallop around your house and pretend to be riding your horse? Just wondering. :)
I so love your blog! Thank you :)
|Just wanted to add a second comment to my one on 6th May to say thank you for your prayers and praise the Lord because I now have a job as a carer 3 mornings a week. This means that I can still be at home most of the time and will still have time to fit in my other projects.
Just found your website!! Love it!!!! Reminds me of the scripture in Titus 2..
Thank you for teaching us how to care for our families…I love it! Can’t wait to read more!
Do you have anymore copies of your cookbook?
Amy Jo
Love all the western touches! The engagement pictures are wonderful! Their expressions are priceless. Congratulations to the happy couple. :-)
Boy, do those cookies look yummy too! I’ll have to make up some for my girls.
Have a great afternoon!
Blessings,
Jill
Hi, Ruthie! Just found your marvelous blog through Maryjane (Beehive Cottage), and had to come by and say hello! Just joined up for the Sugar Pie Sisterhood, too–sounded too sweet to pass up!
Hope your weekend is wonderful…

Hi Ruthie! Lurrve this post! For starters you mentioned all our local fun things to do here in Northern Nevada, if you ever come back to Tahoe or VC email me! And right now i have the extreme honor of working at a cute lil cowgirl store here in Gardnerville. It’s a tiny lil 1930’s house on main street and we sell the most amazing cowgirly clothes that you would love! Check out the stores site and look for my daughter Loagan she models for the store, shes the gal in the top right with the black and turquoise shirt on with the horse. :) Hope all is well with you! Love Elizabeth from Minden

Just praying you are all safe in Missouri. I’ve thought of you and your precious family often since I heard of the tornadic weather. Even though we have never met..I’m praying for you and your family and friends….GOD is still good, all the time.

ruthann,
our family enjoys bonanza, gunsmoke, the virginian too. these programs are so much more entertaining then those horrible reality shows. i especially like the interior sets with the mixture of high victorian with rugged frontier style. i have some of that same look in my home.
i always enjoy your posts, particularly when you share your wonderful home with us. i find your blog comfortably settling when the world is so unsettled.
Aunt Ruthie,
In every picture I see of you on your blog, you always look so well put together. May I ask what keeps you motivated to look as nice as you do. I am a 37 yr.old mother of two young girls (11 & 5) and I feel I stopped caring a long time ago. I’ve allowed myself to put on a lot of weight and just don’t know how to come out of this mess I find myself in. I always pray to the Lord for answers I want to turn to him in time of stress and when feeling tired & not food, but I just can’t seem to do it. Any advice? Thanks.

Just now realized this comment is a bit late – oops!
So thankful to have discovered your blog! What a breath of fresh air it was to me. Thank you for allowing the woman God made you to be to shine throughout. Blessings to you and yours.
I LOVE YOUR WEBSITE! I passed it on to some of my friends too. Thanks so much!!!!!
Fun, fun blog! I added it to my favorites! I have a question about the picture with your fireplace in it. Did you do some kind of treatment on the bricks or is that the way they were? If you did do a treatment could you share how that was done? Thank you!!!
My daughter forwarded your blog to me and it is so cute. I love it
Nice blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download
it from somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple adjustements would really
make my blog jump out. Please let me know where you
got your design. Appreciate it
