It’s almost that time again…when the warm summer sunshine will beckon us outdoors to taste the cherry tomatoes fresh-picked from the vine. The bees will be buzzin’ in the jasmine, the kids will be squealin’ under cool water sprinklers, sweet tea will be singin’ our name and front porch rockers will be swayin’ with the rythym of the crickets on sultry summer evenings. Yes, the good Ol’ summertime is finally here! So now is the perfect time to plan for an abundance of summer joy to make sure we soak up every sweet drop of this season’s goodness!
I am welcoming the start of Summer in Sunny Californy! My son J.J. is getting married in just a few days to his sweetheart Tiffany Rose and so we are in the thick of happy celebrating! But just before we left my “Farmhouse in the Ozarks” I spent some time culling the fruit from my peach trees. I learned that when a peach tree is loaded with fruit you have to thin it out by removing some of the peaches so that the ones remaining will have room to grow big, sweet and juicy. Also, if the branches have too much fruit it can weigh the branch down and possibly cause it to break. I didn’t like culling my trees because all of the baby peaches looked perfect and so cute! (boo hoo!) I felt like I was throwing away good fruit, but in order to have the juiciest-best end result, it had to be done. It reminded me of our every day life and how we need to say “no” to too many activities, even good and cute ones, so that we will have room for the sweetest and juiciest best in our lives.
So as you are planning out your summer days and creating your Summer To-Do list, be sure to make room for what is the sweetest and juiciest best…
…Like making memories with family and friends, enjoying things like…
A backyard cookout…
A trip to an amusement park with the kids… (this is a photo of little Ol’ me in the straw hat standing next to my two brothers. My mom is holding my sister Sherry. We were on the Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Even at such a young age, Walt Disney had captivated my heart!)
A visit to see Grandma and Grandpa down on the farm…
Canning jars of summer goodness…
Relaxing under a shady tree… (this is my mom on the left chatting with her friends in the afternoon breeze)
A drive into town to get ice cream…
A family picnic…
Eating supper outdoors…
A family camping trip…
Enjoying a “Mayberry” kinda day…

“I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Summer day than to relax in a cooling afternoon breeze with an iced cold glass of sweet tea, a jar of yummy ”Farm Wife Banana Pudding” and Ruthann’s new e-book Watermelon and Fireflies. Jam-packed with the best that Sugar Pie Farmhouse has to offer, it’s a joy to read and sparks the imagination quicker than fireflies at sunset. It is charming, homey and conveys in the sweetest possible terms Ruthann’s love for home and family and it will inspire you to make the most of this summer with your family. It’s at the top of my summer reading list.”

“What an incredibly delightful read! From the beautifully decorated pages to the precious stories and funny anecdotes, Watermelon and Fireflies makes your heart sing and reminds you of all of the beauty of sweet summertime. Aunt Ruthie shares so many of her wonderful and creative ideas that inspire one to not let the season go by without “making a memory.” I’m excited to purchase this southern jewel for each of my grandmas, aunts, mom and sister and look forward to taking a little walk down memory lane with the women who were such an integral part of the summers of my childhood. Thank you Ruthann for sharing your amazing heart with your Sugar Pie Sistas!

Your Kindred Sista
Also included are 14 of my Sugar Pie Sistas Summertime ideas and sweet memories of summer’s past. When I read these I could almost feel the warm summer breeze flow across my face and taste the fresh blueberry pie! And I could almost hear Grandma hummin’ an old hymn as she hung her linens out on the line…the wind snappin’ the sheets…the bees a-buzzin’.
I think you’ll find that Watermelon & Fireflies will remind you of an old fashioned country church picnic. The background graphics resemble homey kitchen tablecloths and the recipes are like the dishes the women-folk would proudly set on the long tables, pot-luck style under the breezy shade of an old oak tree. The activities and ideas are family-friendly, easy on the pocket-book, and are sure to create many heartwarming memories and traditions.
Since this is an E-book, you can download it immediately to read it on your computer.
If you’re interested in printing the E-Book, I highly recommend going down to your local Staples, Office Depot or UPS store and have them print the PDF document for you. Last summer when I first released this e-book, there were a few gals who experienced issues with printing. The primary reason for this is the size of the PDF file (there’s just so much fun stuff!). Some computers and printers just can’t process such large files, so you may run into printing errors.
You can put your copy of “Watermelon and Fireflies” in a binder or bind it like I did; After printing it out on quality Premium paper, I put the pages inside plastic Sheet Protectors and then tied them together with 3 strips of wide gingham ribbon. If you cut the ribbon at a slant it’s easy to thread it through each hole and tie a double knot to secure it
Tied together with ribbons adds to the vintage, down-on-the-farm look. I also slipped a sheet of posterboard behind the front and back cover to give it a firmer, hardback feel.
For a limited time only, I’m going to give all my Sugar Pie Sistas a 50% discount on my E-Book, Watermelon & Fireflies. This discount will be available during the next 4 weeks and will expire on June 30th, 2011. To get your copy and to receive the 50% discount click here or click the giant pink button below. Once you’ve purchased the E-Book, you’ll receive an email with all the download instructions.
Just so there’s no confusion, I want all my sistas to know that this is a PDF document that you can download to your computer. This is NOT a printed book that you’ll be receiving by mail. Due to the fact that this is a digital download, I won’t be able to accept any refunds. If you have any questions about your download you can contact my son Dusty at (auntruthie@sugarpiefarmhouse.com). Understand that he has a full time job and a baby on the way so it may take a few days for him to get back to you.
Little Aunt Ruthie

Oh, JOY!
I was just reading some of your back posts on summer decorating and re-reading “Watermelon and Fireflies” from last summer! It is just divine with all those vintage touches and great ideas! We will be trying out the “Breakfast in a pail” for Father’s Day as a surprise to Daddy before going to church………shh! (It’s a secret!)
So many other great ideas in it too! Perfect for us right now in big ‘ol Texas as it is already hot, Hot, HOT! I even bought a honesuckle candle today because I was reminded of it in one of your older posts! It smells like a garden in my house :)
It sounds like the Lord above is blessing you abundantly as you welcome a new daughter into the family and wait patiently for another sweet grandbaby! Enjoy your time with you family!
Thank you always for your encouragement, Aunt Ruthie! You are a blessing to so many!
Like my grandma used to say, “The Lord bless you REAL good!”
I cant even to begin to tell you how happy I am to have found your website and your FB page. i just moved to Paris TN 3 years ago, I was born a raised in NYC and I love the south. You are a true blessing! I am a mother of 3 and had a very rough life growing up being the only child of two very ill parents who are now deceased and my last 2 children never got a chance to know them. I have been through some difficult times since 2004 of watching them both pass and my husband losing his job which we lost everything we had to rebuild our lives. In that time frame my husband also came down with an auto Immune illness. By Gods grace I got through it all and live a simple life and thank him every minute for all the blessings and hard times he got me and my family through. I always say it could be worse. Count my blessings and not my problems. Anyway sometimes its hard to not get caught up in all the heartache and it consumes you. Your love for Jesus is so touching because I share that love too. You inspired me to unpack my sewing machine and find my beads and so on. You helped bring back the lost girl inside of me and to enjoy life and my family to the fullest and to refocus on the woman I was before all my difficult trials and tribulations. God Bless you and yours always. Keep blogging. You are so spiritually uplifting and inspirational with your homemaking.
Aunt Ruthie, this little e-book is darling. And I always drink cold drinks from canning jars, so I will be pouring myself a big ‘ol glass of homemade cinnamon iced tea and sit under my 100 year old maple and enjoy reading your delightful creation. You are always such a ray of sunshine!
Hugs & Blessings,
Brenda
Have a wonderful trip and a beautiful wedding. May God bless their union! Victoria Lynn

I absolutely adore “Watermelon and Fireflies”! I bought it last year and will peruse it throughout the year because of it’s sweetness (just like it’s author).

Hi Aunt Ruthie ;) :)
Oh, I”m so over the moon excited that you’re offering the eBook “Watermelon & Fireflies” :) :) I remember when you offered it last summer. I couldn’t afford it, then when I was able to buy it, I couldn’t find the link for it anymore ;( :( Truly, this week, I was really thinking about it again thinking to myself ” I don’t know of Aunt Ruthie is going to offer that same book again. If she doesn’t , she’ll have another book equally full of cuteness, delight, practical stuff with beauty etc” :) :) Oh, then I read your post today :) :) :) I’m so happy, because now I can afford to purchase it. It looks like it is worth EVERY penny :) :) Thank you. Thank you :) :)
I”ve really made it my project to make my home a real haven of beautiy and hospitality this summer…starting with giving my house a real super clean :) :) I have this eBook that I bought recently called “31 Days to Clean – Having a Martha House the Mary Way”. I have to laugh, because I’m definitely more of “Mary” when it comes to house cleaning ;) :) :) However, I”m starting to see more sparkly house…and the result is well worth the effort ;) :) right now the weather is beautiful with a gorgeous breeze. I have the glass sliding door open. There is also a screen door, which is wonderful…it lets the nice breeze in and still maintains my privacy. (I live in an apartment co mplex) Oh, and the breeze is moving my nice whtie shabby chick panel curtains. It’s beautiful :) :) I intend on en joying a nice little mini red velvet cake and some tea or iced coffee….haven’t decided yet ;) :)
Thanks for making the eBook available again and at a discount. That’s a real ministry/blessing :) :) Have a lovely week. Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :) :) :)
p.s. I LOVE weddings…again, romance :) :) I’m so happy for your son and his fiance ;) :)
It is the opposite season here and rather chilly today but my I am feeling warmer just looking at those summery pages of cheerfulness – the jingle bells in July page has reminded me to consider hosting a Christmas in July celebration this year at my home. Did you know Auntie Ruthie that down under it is quite a tradition to have Christmas in July parties when the colder weather is more reminiscent of a Northern Hemisphere Christmas. All the restaurants have roast turkey dinners on the menu and decorations, especially those in the regions which do receive snow – we don’t even receive frosts but I’m now imagining a roast dinner (followed by warm pie and custard rather than ice cream!) by candlelight on a cold evening and creating a table decoration with more traditional Christmas fruits and flowers – I used nectarines last Christmas, they looked fabulous scattered around gold pillar candles. It’s funny I now associate Christmas with many of those images from your e- book – peaches, watermelon (makes a wonderful festive punch) and cherries!
Hey !
Loved the old photos! Your baby girl favors you so much when you were little, and you really favor your mom! I also noticed that the styles in the photo of the women standing in their “Sunday best” are actually coming back in style now!!! Have a blessed day!
Oh Aunt Ruthie, my good day just got better once I seen this new post. ;) I’m inspired to play some happy tunes & do something creative and extra domestic!… Be sure to congratulate the bride and groom for us. Safe travels. XOXOXOXO

You looked so cute in that straw hat as a little girl! I bet you loved life then as much as you do now. Thanks again for all the hard work you put into “Watermelon and Fireflies”. Dearest Aunt Ruthie…
I am completely enamored with your ‘Watermelon and Fireflies’ e-book. Not only is it engaging to look at, but it is chock full of practical ideas that even I, a mama of many, could (and should!) attempt.
I hope you don’t mind, but I gave it a plug on my little online ‘Coffee Cottage’….every woman who loves pretty, practical, vintage and vibrant should have their own copy. (I even printed out a page and decorated with it.).
Thank you oh so much for sharing your talent with the world. Congratulations on the expansion of your family…no doubt it will be a memorable time!
Warmly,
Jeane`
