Well HOWDY-DO! Sugar Pie Darlin’! On my last post I talked about hoedowns and handpies…such a wonderful and delightful combination! Don’t you think we need a come-back of those old-timey, wholesome ways for families to have fun?! The boys in their farmer overalls and the gals in flower-printed country dresses a-whirlin’-and-a-twirlin’ on the old barn floor! Yee Haw! Yup, back in the day, Hoedown’s and Hand-pies were a weekly tradition, during the warm months of the year, on my hubby’s grandparents farm, in Bennington, Oklahoma. I just love thinking about it!
I love it when my mama-in-law Ruth tells me her back-in-the-day stories about her life on the farm in southern Oklahoma. This photo shows part of her family (there were a total of nine kids) from left to right is; Hazel-Marie, little Frances-Virdeen, Papa Maynard Cox, Little Neoma-Ruth (my mama-in-law), Mama Jennie Mae Archer Cox and big brother Roy-Ray. Frances and Ruth are wearing homemade dresses made from flour sacks. Ruth remembers mama taking her and her sisters to Jake Brown’s Mercantile to look at the variety of patterned cotton sacks of flour to pick out the color that they liked best. Then after emptying the flour into a bin, Mama would wash, starch and sew the flour sack fabric into sweet and simple farmgirl dresses.
As I said in my last post Mama Jennie Mae was very resourceful. Mama Ruth told me that whenever anyone became ill or had sprained a muscle, she would go into the woods to gather herbs and certain plants to make her own home remedies. How in the world did she know if the plant would help the person or make them sicker?? Perhaps the fact that her papa was 1/2 Cherokee Indian that she learned early on, living off the land, which ones had healing properties and which ones to stay away from.
She would bring the gathered leaves or twigs into her kitchen and add them to simmering water on the wood stove to make a broth, tea or ointment depending on the ailment. Back then folks had to rely on home remedies to get well or wait a week or two until the doctor came to town. Today we have the blessing of medical care ’round the clock! Even though the world has certainly advanced immensely in the field of medicine since the 1930’s I would rather take something natural, if possible, to help heal or prevent an ailment. That’s why I was so happy to have made a recent discovery for what some are calling “the miracle food”!
Have you ever discovered something or found a product that you are so thrilled with that you get a little giddy over it ...then you tell your friends about it only to hear their reply “Oh yeah, I’ve been using that for a few years now”. What?? A few years? Where have I been? And how come nobody told me about it?? Well, just in case you haven’t heard (but you probably have!), my new favorite natural product is EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL! Have you heard about it? Just say “no” to appease me! Hee-Hee! Well, I really do love this stuff so much….yeah, I kinda wanna marry it.
There are so many benefits to Extra Virgin Coconut Oil! According to Dr. Oz and other medical doctors it has been shown that:
~It increases good HDL Cholesterol
~Strengthens immune system
~Helps stabilize blood sugar
~ It’s Anti-bacterial & Anti-fungal–can use like Neosporin
~Aids in healing diaper rash
~Increases metabolism to loose weight
~Can help with Dementia and Alzheimer’s
~Can increase mental alertness and brain function
~Helps fade wrinkles
~It can heal blemishes
~Makes your hair silky soft
~It gives you energy
~Improves heart health
AND SO MUCH MORE!
The experts say that Coconut Oil is the healthiest oil to cook with, even more so than Olive Oil.
Look for this yummy veggie recipe using Coconut Oil here on Pinterest.
You can stir a tablespoon into oatmeal, coffee or tea…
Spread it on toast with jam…
Bake it into your muffins…(the same amount that you would use for the shortening or oil in the recipe)
Or you can eat it from a spoon! Okay so here’s the thing…I gag very easily…I’m a big, fat gag-baby if you wanna know… but I can actually eat it with something sweet on top…my husband and daughter, not so much…they cringe at this idea! (Now who’s the baby!) There is a slight coconut taste, and it is oil in a solid form but turns to liquid immediately in your mouth or on your hands. Just a spoonful of sugar (or Fruit Loops) makes the medicine (Coconut Oil) go down! Heehee!
You could get creative and top it with chocolate chips and an almond for a healthy version of Almond Joy!
But my favorite way to use Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is to use it as a moisturizer on my face at night before I go to bed.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!
I cannot even believe how smooth my skin feels in the morning!!
You just need a tiny bit…about the size of a Cheerio, pretty much…then rub it in your hands, it will liquefy immediately… smooth it on your face, lips, arms, hands & feet. I purchased little travel containers at Walmart to keep some with me in my purse in place of lotion on my hands or as a lip balm.
And! You can use it to condition all your wooden spoons and cutting board! Love that!!
Well darlin’ don’t just take my word for it, do a little search on Google or Youtube and find out the facts for yourself (type “Health Benefits of Coconut Oil”. Watch this Youtube video! I just shared the tip-o-the-iceberg regarding all that it’s good for. If you want to try it make sure you get Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and not the refined version. I went to my local Walmart to get some but they only had the refined version. So I ordered mine on Amazon click here. You can also try finding it at a health food store. Coconuts are not something that Mama Jennie Mae could have grown on her Oklahoma farm, but I think she would have loved it just the same.
So tell me what is your favorite use for Coconut Oil? And/or what other natural products do you benefit from? Do tell!! (I need to find out if there’s something else I’m missing out on! Heehee!)
God bless your darlin’ heart!
Aunt Ruthie
If you haven’t tried it to make popcorn, do! Delicious! I’ll have to look for those little tubs…I’ve been using Vaseline for gloss because my lips are so sensitive to many products. Perhaps they’ll do even better with coconut oil.
It makes the BEST deodorant ever! We have been using it for years and we never smell. My husband and all my relatives use it now. Here is my recipe ~
http://lorialexander.blogspot.com/2011/03/best-deodorant.html
Great post! I am going to start using it on my face starting tonight.
I’ve been using coconut oil for a lot of things, but you gave me some new ideas! We’re trying to do more natural remedies in our home!
I use coconut oil for my hair, skin but not as much as I ought to. What I do relgiously is oil pulling — every morning when I awake first thing I do is take a spoonful of co and keep it for about 15-20 minutes. I haven’t had a winter cold or flu in two years (just the amount of time I’ve been using co).
Try it — you’ll be well pleased.
It’s SO funny that this morning I was thinking that I haven’t seen a post from you in awhile….and here it is! Yay!
My mom has been using it for her alzheimer’s and it is definitely helped her out, alot! :D It’s just recently that I’ve found out the other good things about it, that I’m taking it now.
God bless, Heather :D
Heather, could you tell us the amount your mom takes? I’ve read that we need to be careful how much to take if you’re taking other meds — my mom takes a lot of medication and she’s also diabetic — she’s been forgetting a lot — hasn’t been diagnosed w/ alzheimers but would love to learn more about perhaps as a preventative…
Thank you and Lord bless you.
I hadn’t heard about coconut oil before, Aunt Ruthie, so thank you for the hot tip. It sounds like a wonderful find. I will have to look for it at our health food store. The latest “home remedy” I tried was last week, when I slathered olive oil on my hair, left it in for 30 minutes, then shampooed and conditioned as usual. It was supposed to make your hair shiny, but to be honest, I didn’t notice a difference. Maybe coconut oil would work! :)
Could I ask a question of Agnes? What is oil pulling? When you say you take a spoonful of CO and keep it for about 15-20 minutes…what does that mean? Really I don’t quite get it? Do you swallow it?
I have heard about CO but seems strange to use it to oil your spoons and then eat it too. Just will have to do a little more “reading up” on this miracle substance!
Love your blog as always!!
I love the stuff too! I’ve made whipped body butter using co and shea butter and can’t believe how moist my skin is even during our harsh winters. I have recently started the oil pulling that Agnes mentioned too with good success. Very good information on your post today!
Ruthann thank you for the great tips. And thank you, Agnes, for commenting about oil pulling. After Google-ing it I learned something new! I can’t ingest that amount of oil without getting sick but it sounds like the pulling thing might be very beneficial. Except, the brand of CO I use is virgin so that means it doesn’t have the same health benefits? It is used here only for cooking because it is so pricey but for sure I’m going to be testing it out on my wooden spoons, cutting boards and utensil handles since my fancy schmancy lemon oil has gone missing. ;)
Kitchen fun! Thank you for another wonderful post.
I have been using Coconut oil for a lot of things for a couple of years now. It’s amazing stuff. So good and so healthy. Did you know there are a lot of studies now that show Coconut oil aids in slow down {or even reverse} the stages of Alzheimer’s Disease? No kidding. It’s been on the news:
http://www.cbn.com/tv/1472017228001
P.S. Here is another home skin care tip for you. I poke a hole in about 3 Pure Vitamin E oil capsules and add the oil to a tiny eye cream sized jar filled with Coconut oil that has been slightly melted. Then, I use a tooth pick or wooden skewer and blend them together. At this point I put the cream in the refrigerator to become solid again. After that happens there is no need to keep it refrigerated. The oils will not become rancid. There you go. Easy peasy. Only two ingredients and it’s the best eye cream around! I’ve made lots as gifts for my family and friends.
It’s great to use as a conditioner for your hair. Another health benefit, I have bought a Vitamix to make green smoothies. You can google Dr. Don Colbert and Kimberly Snyder to review the benefits of green smoothies. A Vitamix is the best you can buy and the benefits of the green smoothies are amazing. I can already tell a difference after two weeks, in my body and skin.
Hello Aunt Ruthie, your posts always brighten my day… I recently discovered Bulgaros aka Kefir. It helps with all my tummy trouble (gastritis/gall pain and so on). It’s basically a probiotic that you can buy in store or cultivate at home. In store it can come in so many forms: yogurt, ice cream, smoothies… at home it reminds me of a plain yogurt so I add it to my own smoothies and such.
I use it on my face and feet at night. I need to start using it more in my cooking and baking!
Thank you for your post; I’ve been watching for it! :D
I love coconut oil! It’s so healthy. I cook and bake with it. My husband and I use as a moisturizer. I also make my own toothpaste with it. It’s an antiviral/antifungal. It cures kennel cough in dogs. I could go on and on…
Well….I have never heard of such!! I will be grabbing myself some of this the next time we stop at the health food store! Thanks for sharing!
I was wondering if your hair and pillowcase ends up really greasy by morning? Thank you!
the oil pulling is….you take a spoonful and you use your tongue to mix it in and out around your teeth — and you do it for 20 minutes then you spit it out (do not swallow) and brush your teeth — what’s suppose to do is “pull” all the impurities that are in your mouth and heal you from an assortment of ailments. I don’t suffer from any illnesses (that I know of) I’m just happy that I didn’t catch a cold/flu for two years in a row :)
Hope this helps. but there’s tons of stuff online and books too. I generally look for a sale w/ free shipping and order then and stock up well.
I have enjoyed using Coconut Oil in all of these ways for about a year. I get mine from Tropical Traditions (they have a Facebook page and a website). They have great sales and are a Christian company so I like to support them. I use Expeller-pressed Coconut Oil when I don’t want any coconut flavor. Thanks for all of your ideas!
Thanks for this wonderful tip, Ruthie! I absolutely love the taste of coconut, so using this will be a delight. I especially like your idea of using it as a face moisturizer. I’m going to try it on my cuticles, too.
I look forward to giving this a try! Thanks!
So Happy to see another new post from you! I have not heard about coconut oil but love natural remedy solutions. I’m definitely goin’ to get me some coconut oil. The coconut oil “pulling” sounds so very interesting. Does the coconut oil taste “coconut-ish?” Aunt Ruthie, I love the family picture above. I think it would be wonderful if little girls still liked to wear simple farm style dresses. It would also be great to get flour in sacks that we could reuse instead of having all the waste like we do today. Also, that picture of the farmhouse kitchen is such a dream. I love the idea of living simply and that kitchen is great! I’ve noticed when looking at old pictures that people didn’t have a bunch of “stuff” they had a bunch of stuff that all served a purpose. Then they had the few little knick-knacks that made their heart feel cozy. I love your blog and am always looking forward to the next post!!! Thanks for being such a great inspiration!
Aunt Ruthie,
My mom and I were on a trip to Branson this past Jan. Late that night my dear friend was using coconut oil on her face and she told us of the many things it could do. I tried it and within 2 weeks a blemish that I had hidden with “bangs” for years, had completly gone away! I was sold! I can tell my little wrinkles look a little better too! One thing about it, it sure is the cheapest cosmetic I know of. If they were selling this in one of those fancy, smanchie, stores, it would be $100 a jar! LOL
I still have not aquired a taste for this oil? I will be working on that. Almond Joy looks like the best bet!
Blessings,Becky
My husbands side of the family all live in Bennington Oklahoma! In fact we are going down over spring break! We live in Guthrie, Ok so we are about 3 hrs away. My mother-in-law was born and raised there and continues to run a cattle ranch on the family farm where she was raised. She is 71 yrs old. I wonder if she knows your mother-in-law! Your last post about the berry pies had me so amazed because nobody has ever really heard of Bennington, Ok. Would love to know if they grew up together! We spend most of our vacation time there because my husbands likes to go spend time with her and the family. Her maiden name is Virginia Perry. She is the daughter of Paul Perry. They were peanut farmers for years and now her and her brothers run cattle.
my grocery store is carrying this now. i need to try it!
Love love love coconut oil. I cook with it (I lightly fried some fish filets in coconut oil last night. Yummy.), make toothpaste, use it to moisturize my skin, oil pull with it, and probably more! I buy it by the gallon from Tropical Traditions when they have a sale. I use it in any recipe that calls for oil–pancakes, muffins, etc. It really is good stuff and has been unfairly maligned over the years.
I have been using coconut oil on my face at bedtime and once a week as a hair treatment for about a year now with great results!
This was such an informative post! I really appreciate all the Information, and I love the photos!
I used to take coconut oil and olive oil until recently after learning about and reading the book “The China Study” You are such a lovely lady and I adore your blog..please consider the research in this book….would like to see you and your family around for a long time : )
People will discredit the notion, but the research stands as simple facts.
It all comes down to science and biology.
Hugs,
Debra
In some parts of the country, Costco is now carrying coconut oil (the brand in your picture) for an excellent price. I was so happy my Costco started stocking it recently. My friend and I buy the huge jars regularly to stock our pantries just in case they stop carrying it because the price is SO good!
I like to mix it with a little baking soda in the shower for a body/face scrub…works great and smells good too! I also like to mix it with a tsp/Tbs. of nutella at night for a treat when the kids are in bed…so good and so good for you!
Just took my daily dose with an almond and mini chocolate chips! It does taste like an Almond Joy! Thanks for the tip Ruthann! It goes down so much more pleasant! We have used it also for cooking and on the skin. It is a wonderful product and thank you for posting about it and getting the word out further! Now I know your secret to your beautiful complexion! Plus being Italian helps too! Love ya, Maryjane xox
hmmm I am going to have to hunt some of this “miracle drug” down. My “old guy” dog has an ear infection that we cannot clear up no matter what the vet has given him. I might try some of this!
I adore coconut oil and have been using it for years in my cooking as well as for beauty purposes. It’s quite a little wonder ingredient! I get mine from Vitacost because they have the best prices! I even did a Youtube video about this little secret ingredient!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrohi6NO-wk
Please remember, though, that it
Please remember, though, that it IS STILL AN OIL, and therefore has the same CALORIES as oil. If you use too much of it in your daily diet, you will not only Not lose weight, you could GAIN WEIGHT!!
Love your post! Ive been using coconut oil for quite a few years now. It is ok to use organic refined expeller pressed coconut oil for cooking when you dont want your food to taste like coconut. And it does have the same health benefits as extra virgin. Just make sure its organic and expeller pressed. My 2 favorite brands of organic refined expeller pressed coconut oil are Tropical Traditions and Spectrum Organics. Some Walmart stores are now carrying the Spectrum brand. My favorite brands of extra virgin coconut oil are Nutiva and Tropical Traditions. You can also stir it into your coffee or hot tea, that helps with the gagging part, lol. When my family is sick, we drink hot herbal tea with raw honey and coconut oil mixed in. It really helps shorten the duration of whatever were sick with. The book Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon is a wealth of wonderful health and dietary information.
Every night, right before I get in bed, I rub it on my feet, then put socks on. There’s always some left on my hands so I just run them thru my hair. The following morning I simply wash it out. And, unlike a lot of hair treatments, it washes out very easily. Cant tell you how many comments I get telling me how healthy my hair looks.
You can whip the coconut oil in your kitchen aid mixer. It comes out really thick and creamy and use it as a lotion.
I am totally shocked that I have never even heard of E V C O~how interesting! I enjoyed reading all the tips and info from you and others.
Thanks for telling us about it~will have to give it a try for sure!
P.S. I always enjoy your posts!!
Tanya
I love using coconut oil in banana bread. It gives it a more tropical flavor. Just substitute it for the oil, butter or shortening that the recipe asks for.
I’ve been using coconut oil for about a year now for cooking. Here’s one of my favorite recipes to use it in – Coconut Oil Granola: http://arcticgardenstudio.blogspot.com/2012/01/coconut-oil-granola.html
By the way, Trader Joe’s also carries their own coconut oil.
I’ve known about coconut oil and use it some, but not NEAR enough as I should! GREAT timing on your post for this girl to remember all the benefits! *******And a note to Agnes…something else to investigate for your mom is Phosphatidylserine also known as PS. I discovered this as I was looking for something for my mom. I could not get my mom to take it and since I’m not there all the time, I really couldn’t enforce its use. My mom is on a lot of different meds such as Dilantin and Coumadin. It does not interfere with these at all. I took a list of my mom’s meds to her pharmacy and was told that nothing she takes interacts with PS. Look up Nita Scoggan on Google. If you want to connect, let me know!
Coconut oil contains medium chained fatty acids which are digested more easily than long chain fatty acids such as in butter and other fats. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola (www.mercola.com) ingesting coconut oil has been proven to enable you to lose weight. The recommended amount to be eaten daily is 2 tablespoons. Dr. Oz has also confirmed this finding on his tv show. I use it every day as a facial and body moisturizer. I has done wonders for my skin (I’m 64). The improvement in my nail health has been remarkable. My niece and daughters are all using it now too. Read about it on the net….there are lots of articles about it. I buy refined, organic Spectrum Organics brand at my grocery store. It has no coconut smell. It costs $8 for a 14 oz. jar.
We LOVE coconut oil in our house! My 16 year old daughter uses it to cure facial blemishes aka pimples, I have oil pulled with it, but have not done it routinely, put it all over babies body instead of toxic baby lotion… But our favorite new found love is chocolate pudding.
1/2 cup coconut oil
3 ripe bananas
3 Tbl cocoa powder
1/2 cinnamon
Dash of salt
1 tsp vanilla
Throw it all in a blender and whip it up. Use it as frosting on a banana cake or just eat it. We’ve added peanut butter to it and it was…. fabulous! And amazingly good for our brains.
Be blessed!
Laura
What a small world!! I grew up in Bennington! you definately don’t hear people mention that small, country town very often!! There was a comment by Natalee in some previous comment, i know the Perrys! I graduated with Cheryl.
I use essential oils to help prevent and cure all sorts of ailments. When used topically, some of the oils are “hot” on the skin. I dilute them in coconut oil and get the same benefits as undiluted, plus silky smooth skin! I dilute all oils for use on my kids’ skin, as well.
I looooove coconut oil! I use it as a moisturizer for my face, hands, and body. I love it on popcorn! Also, I make candy with it: 1 cup cocnut oil
1 cup dark cocoa powder
about 1/4 cup Splenda
Mix it up with an electric mixer and pour by tablespoonfuls into an ice-cube tray. Chill till set and store in fridge. It completely satisfies my chocolate cravings while being good for me.
Hello my friend! I found this a couple of months ago when we started juicing. For a special treat mix cacao powder (I used Hershey’s but I’m sure there’s organic available) with the coconut oil and then add pure maple syrup to sweeten it. If its too runny spread it on a piece of wax paper and put in the freezer till solid. Home made candy! Yum!
Blessings!
Patti
I order my organic coconut oil and products online from tropicaltraditions.com
They run a couple good sales a month and I order it by the gallon. Different sizes are available. They also offer coconut milk ,coconut flour, etc. Its gluten-free and tempura (shrimp) is fabulous. Recipes on the site are great and healthy. I recently fell in love with coconut icecream at a local Thai restaurant, and the recipe for that is on there too! Perfect for vegans, and lactose intolerant people, you’d never know there are no dairy products in it! I’m a farm girl from way back, and it took a lot for me to even try it, because I’d always been a bread and butter kinda gal. But this is providing a healthy, delicious alternative and I’m able to eat rich AND have managed to lose weight too. Love your blog! I, too, live in the Ozarks. Eureka Springs area. I work in a gift shop at a local attraction and make handcrafted items as well as teach some art & craft classes. Your site inspires my creativity and I am grateful to you for that! Thanks, and hope to meet you one day!
I don’t think I could do the “pulling” thing. Holding it in my mouth without swallowing for that long would not work for me! Why does the co have to be extra virgin? What’s wrong with the LouAnn brand you can get at Walmart?
Great reading all the responses as well as your original post, Aunt Ruthie. I have been seeing a lot on the popular food blogs about cooking/baking with coconut oil and just the other day I was reading an article about the benefits for Alzheimer patients. I will track down some EVCO, and am not only going to try baking with it but I am curious about it as a moisturizer for my winter weary skin. And, I really need help with a thumbnail that continues to split – here’s hoping for some results. And, thanks for the info!
Glad to see your new post! I like to mix in 1/4 t baking soda in a dollop of coconut oil in my hands and use as a scrub on my dry skin. Wonderful! Then I use my handmade body cream. 2c vanilla oatmeal baby lotion, 1c vitamin E cream, 1c coconut oil. Whip the coconut oil first until creamy then add the other ingredients. Use a mixer. Heaven! (You can use any scent of baby lotion)
Enjoy!
The vitamin E cream is in the lotion section at Walmart.
Thank you for this amazing information! I bought a jar at our local grocery store this afternoon!
We love to use coconut oil to pop our popcorn… it gives the popcorn a wonderful flavor! Give it a try sometime!
I use it for taking off my eye make-up (might not work if you wear contacts) and then as moisturizer at night after washing. I use it in my bath with alittle lavender oil. I deep condition my hair once a month with it – only the ends! It makes a wonderful massage oil and it is very helpful as a natural, healthy, and relaxing lubricant for husband and wives;) I put a teaspoon in my hot tea and sometimes in my coffee. Use in baking breads and muffins and in oiling pans for eggs. I massaged my babies with it when they were done with bath time and for the diaper area. Also, my babies would eat it solid off the spoon when first starting baby foods. They don’t have tainted taste buds yet and loved it.
LOVE this post, Aunt Ruthie! Love your ideas as well as your readers ideas for using coconut oil! What a fantastic idea to put it into tea. I will be trying that one! I love making a smoothie in the blender with milk, fruit, and coconut oil! It doesn’t all dissolve since the milk is cold so it has these delicious, teeny little pieces floating around in it — almost like little pieces of chocolate in a milk shake — but much healthier! So yummy! My husband is a LMT and has done extensive research on it’s benefits so we keep it in the house at all times — it is so much healthier then the processed oils. When I eat things with processed oils in them I often feel my energy level drop but not so with coconut oil. It gives a feeling of well-being.
Thanks everyone for your tips & ideas. I’ve already printed some of them. :)
@ wendy, who uses CO for candy…..dear, there is NOTHING healthy about Splenda. Look it up- it is poisen ! It is mostly chlorine, would you add pool water to your candy and call that healthy? :(
Yes, I’ve been using coconut oil for years! I love it. It is the primary oil I cook with. During the summer, though, it can become liquid at room temperature if it gets warm enough.
My favorite discovery of it’s healing properties is that with regular use, it clears up keratosis pilaris. Keratosis pilaris is a skin condition where the keratin in the skin builds up and creates little red bumps/dots on primarily the backs of the arms, upper thighs, and butt, but can be all over the body in some individuals.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratosis_pilaris
PattiVZ,
Garlic oil works wonders for ear infections. That is the only thing we used for our kids when they were little and would get ear infections. We avoided a lot of unnecessary antibiotics by using garlic oil. Just put a few drops in the ear/ears for a few days (up to a week) and it should clear right up.
Sorry! I keep thinking of things to say as I read the other comments. Oil pulling can also heal periodontal infections/gingivitis and prevent cavities because of it’s antibacterial properties.
In the winter my legs get so dry & itchy. I mean use a stiff hair brush to get itch relief. The Coconut oil has been one of the few things that has given me any relief. When I think about it, it is mostly instant relief. I got mine at “Whole foods” it is their store brand and 100% Organic, $9.00 and last a very long time. Use it you wont be disappointed.
I’ve been using coconut oil for a few years now and I have nothing but great things to say about it! I have read that CO can also help regulate thyroid function amongst the other things you’ve listed.
Hi Aunt Ruthie – I can HONESTLY SAY that I had not heard about this miracle product until your post. WOOHOO! I immediately ordered it from Amazon the day your post came out and it came on Friday. I spent time Saturday morning looking up youtube videos on the benefits and uses and oh Lord, I had no idea all the great things you can do with it! I started taking it Saturday by mouth (2 spoonfuls daily) and I used it as a hair mask (today I cannot stop touching my hair it is so soft). Thanks to you and your post, I am now hooked. I have plans to do some baking this week and will definitely be using it (hopefully my husband and my guests won’t mind the substitution).
THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this – and thanks to all your commenters on all their suggestions. It is not too often that you can get a product as cheap as this and find so many uses for it.
God Bless you sweetie!
Diane T :):)
I have been using coconut oil for years and love it. I use it for deodorant (mixed with baking soda . . . heated up and then I pour it into an old solid stick deodorant dispenser), for cooking oil, for lotion and for a makeup remover. We have alzheimers on both sides of our family, so I add it whenever I can, as it is said to help with demensia. I bought a huge gallon container off the internet but will be needing another one soon. It really is a great oil . . . and it also makes a pretty good “goo be gone” too! LOL!
Brenda
To Brenda (Past Blessings),
What is the ratio of CO and baking soda to make the deodorant?
I have not yet found a natural deodorant that works for me & would love to try this.
Thanks for any info. you can share.
So glad you found out about this! I’ve been using it for a few years now, mostly as a moisturizer and eye-makeup remover (love it for that! — it has helped my lashes grow longer!!), but also for baking, and most recently for a weightloss smoothie I found on a wonderful health blog. Isn’t it funny that something fattening like an oil can be sooo nutritious and aid in weight loss? Here’s the link if you’re interested in the smoothie. ( http://theorganicmomma.com/coconut-milk-smoothie-weight-loss/ ) It’s hard for me to take the oil from the spoon (makes me gag, too!) but blending it into a smoothie is now my go to way to consume it! Your Almond Joy idea is so clever, though! I’m going to try that next time! Thanks for the tip!
Aunt Ruthie, what is your favorite brand of wooden spoon? A good wooden spoon is as essential to my kitchen as my new (Thanks to your Hillbilly Spaghetti Pie Post) Cast Iron Skillet. Suggestions? And thanks for another great post.
Something else I’ve heard of, but haven’t tried, is using the coconut oil to cleanse your face, not just moisturize it. I use Jojoba oil to cleanse by rubbing it between my hands to warm it up, then massaging it into my face. Once it’s good and tingly, I lay a warm, wet cloth over my face for 10 seconds. Then I use the cloth to wipe the oil and gunk away. If my skin feels tight afterwards, I use a dab of jojoba to moisturize it. I have heard coconut oil is great for acne and moisturizing. I am planning to get some for myself soon!
Ohhhh, eye make up remover and moisturizer at night. Spoonful after my 16 oz. of filtered water in the morning! If my nose gets dry a little bit on the end of a q-tip and swirl it about; smells MUCH better than Vicks any day!!
I will definitely have to try some of these remedies!
Love the family photo, especially of Roy-Ray. That boy had attitude!
Hope you had a wonderful Easter celebration with your adorable growing family. Ok Aunt Ruthie, we went to a relatives house for Easter Dinner and what did she have on her kitchen counter? The same jar of coconut oil that you show in your photos! All the ladies got to speaking about it and I for one really appreciated hearing it from you first on your blog. Thanks for passing along these tips to us. Not everyone had heard of this and I felt better having already known of it because of you! So please keep the tips coming. Thank you for all the creativity, inspiration and product information that you pass along to us!
ps is there a spring e-book in the works? You have to do all four seasons! ;-)
i have been using coconut butter, coconut scrub etc for years and i swear by them. Not only is it good for your skin but it always smells so yummy. Although I dont think I would go as far as to try eating it lol
once you start looking around you would be surprised at the amount of coconut products you can buy.
Aunt Ruthie, I had to run over here and tell you I finally got myself a jar of that lovely coconut oil and just conditioned all my wooden spoons and rubbed it into my hands and face and now I can’t stop sniffing for the joy of smelling that wonderful coconut smell on my nice, soft hands. :) Thank you so much for your recommendation. I can tell already, I’m gonna love this stuff!

I use coconut oil to make a fabulous salad dressing: freeze your wooden salad bowl for several hours. Clean your greens and refrigerate. Melt coconut oil. Add about the same amount of a light salad vinegar ( we like flavored white balsamic from Pinch and Pour). Taste and adjust to your liking. Shake well before using!! Remove bowl from freezer and add cleaned greens, either fresh strawberries, pears, blueberries, etc. Dress salad to your liking and toss well. The coconut oil attaches to the greens because of the cold and the subtle vinegar all blends in. We absolutely love it! I like it best with the baby organic greens and have found fruit works better than veggies. (If you can’t find a light flavored balsamic, unseasoned rice vinegar is a great alternative). Great site!!
Having read this I believed it was extremely informative. I appreciate you finding the time and energy to put this information together. I once again find myself spending way too much time both reading and commenting. But so what, it was still worth it!
I know this is an old post but I wated to say that I use it for sore muscles and it’s amazing!!! My trainer had me start doing it after I worked out and it makes a world of difference. I mix it with frankincense when I do!!!
