Howdy Sugar Pies!
I’m back from vacation and so happy to be back home at the Farmhouse! I’m ready to get back into the swing of summer and all of the fun that it brings!
As promised, here is part three of my Q and A time!
Q. What makes a wonderful marriage? You and your hubby seem so close and so wonderful with each other. I could rephrase that…what one advice would you have for couples?
A. I actually have a couple answers to share:
1. Pray together and go to church.
I cannot stress the importance of keeping the Lord first and foremost in a marriage. It reinforces your goals and purpose in life as a team. Reading the Word of God reminds us to be loving and to have a servants heart. When my hubby and I have disagreements we end up praying and asking the Lord to make us more loving toward each other. It’s hard to stay upset when we both humble ourselves before the Lord.
2. Take time to have fun together.
When my kids were small we decided that Friday nights were our date night to keep our romance alive. We hired a very responsible teen gal from our neighborhood to babysit for us. We would go to dinner, sometimes a movie and sometimes just a drive along the beach or to get an ice-cream cone. It was our chance to talk for a couple of hours without interruptions. Communication is key, you have to make time for it intentionally.I know for a fact this has kept us close.
3. Live the Golden Rule.
Do for him, what you would like him to do for you. Nurture him, think of ways you can bless him everyday, speak kindly, make him feel special. Treat your hubby the way you would like to be treated. Plant seeds of kindness and you will reap a harvest of kindness.
4. Keep looking pretty and smell good for your hubby.
I always do my hair and makeup and dress nice for him (and he does the same for me). Just remember the best cosmetics are a good attitude and a smile!
5. Find out what makes him feel the most loved…then do that.
I highly recommend reading the book The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. In this book he identifies five “love languages”, one of which, fills our “Love Tank” and that of our spouse. They are Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a quick and easy way he helps us find out which “Language” speaks best to our heart to make us feel loved and cherished. When we find out what our heart yearns for and that of our husband we will know how to fill that need. Gary Chapman has also written The Five Love Languages of Children and The Five Love Languages of Teenagers with insights on how to best nuture our kids.
Q. Will your family be taking a vacation this summer?
A. Well, we just spent two delightful weeks in California and we are thinking of taking a road trip down south…perhaps Pigeon Forge Tennessee…the great Smokey Mountains! Take a peek at where I’m hoping to go…..
Is that amazing or what?!
I’ve heard all about the charm and delicious apple pie at the Apple Barn Cider Mill and General Store…
Gotta go see Dolly at Dollywood!
A quaint little chapel in Dollywood…wouldn’t you just love to sit on that park bench and listen to the stillness of this blissful scene! I’d like to live there….do you think they’ll let me?
And I’d love to see this fabulous shop! The Incredible Christmas Place!
Here it is a night…I think I hear a choir singing “Joy To The World”!
Well, if all goes as planned, I’ll be taking a roadtrip down Dolly’s way!
Q. Aunt Ruthie, can we pleeeeeeaaaase see your home??? Still waiting and hoping to see more of your beautiful house!
A. Oh sugar pies, I know! I know! I promise it’s coming soon. I am putting together a digital photo album of my home for the different seasons. I’m thinking of calling it Aunt Ruthie’s Scrapbook. There just isn’t enough time in a day to do all the fun stuff that I want to do, but the good Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise, hopefully it will be ready sometime this summer or early fall.
Q. Where do you find the music for your blog, it’s all so pretty and uplifting?
A. I use finetune.com….you have to pick out 45 songs before you can add the music player to your blog. I just chose songs from old movies, songs from the 1940’s like Doris Day, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby….and I added a little Ozark bluegrass just to keep my toes tappin’! If you hear a song you like, you can see the title and album cover on the Finetune music player on the sidebar to the right.
Q. Could you please tell where to buy the glass lemon juicer with the white lid you show in this article?
A. I’ve had this juicer for a very long time, I may have purchased it at Walmart or Bed Bath and Beyond…if I see it again I will share the source!
Q. I would love to hear more about your journey to Missouri. Why you picked it. How long you had planned it before you made the move.
A. To make a long story short….We came to Branson one year on vacation…it was a glorious golden week in Autumn. We went to Silver Dollar City, an adorable theme park set in period of the 1800’s. It was sweater-weather….the cool air was crisp and sweet, the leaves had just begun to turn the colors of pumpkin, butterscotch and cranberry, and the sky blazed a gorgeous backdrop of bright periwinkle blue. We were feasting on tart sliced apples drizzled with hot caramel sauce (yum!) and the sweet sounds of Southern Gospel music rang joy-bells all around us . That moment felt so heavenly! The sights…the sounds…the tastes…the smells! I turned to my hubby and said wouldn’t it be so great if we could raise our kids in this wonderful, wholesome, delightful, atmosphere! I loved the old fashioned values of this little town of Branson! And I was so amazed that this public theme park allowed Gospel music! ( I found out later the owners are Christians!) Well, without knowing it I planted a seed in his heart. Within one year we were planning to move to Branson Missouri! It so happened that my husband’s family’s line of business, home building and real estate market, had fallen flat. We needed to find a new line of work….
My father-in-law and my hubby had flown to Branson to see about the possibility building homes there. Only, they ended up buying a motel and a Live Music Theater. We were going to run the Theater and oversee the motel. All of a sudden we were in “Show Business”! We found a cast of talented artists and opened The Great American Wild Wild West Show, with singing cowboys and dancing cowgirls and a horse named Buckshot! It was a fun time for sure! I got to be the buyer nad visual merchandiser for our Old Fashioned General Store during the hours my kids were at school. We ran this business for three years, then when the market turned around in California, my father in law asked us to come back to California and build homes again for his company. I had just found out I was expecting a baby (Miss Summer Rose) at age 40 and so the thought of moving back, closer to family, sounded like a good idea. It was a bitter-sweet time, we loved Branson but felt God was calling us back to the West Coast. It turned out to be a God-thing, because my hubby got to spend three years at his dad’s side everyday building the business back up when shortly thereafter, my father in law passed away from cancer. My hubby would not have had that time with his dad–his best friend— if we had not moved back.
During the past ten years we went back to Branson for our Summer vacations. And everytime we would say to ourselves “This place is so amazing…why aren’t we living here!”. It was just never the right time…until our two of our kids got married and J.J. started College. In 2006 we felt God calling us back to the Ozarks. Along with my brother and sister-in-law we purchased 400 acres, with gorgeous views of the Ozark hills and have developed it into 5 acre lots that we are currently selling. I do miss my family, but we are fortunate to be able to fly back a few times a year. And of course since I live in Branson now–one of the Entertainment capitols of the U. S.– we get lots of family coming out to visit us!
Q. Can you tell me the red lipstick that you use and what is your favorite perfume?
A. I have a couple red lipsticks that I use….one is LOLA the color is Cherry Bomb. (Click the word Lola and you’ll find it on Amazon). It comes with a cute little pop-up mirror. It’s a true Cherry color…not orange-y.
The other is Estee Lauder Crystal Lipstick: the color is Passion Fruit. (available on Amazon) It’s more of a softer sheer red.
I also always use a lip-liner with my lipstick. There are some gals that can whip out their gloss and swipe it on without even looking….I wish I could do that! I have to define my lips with a pencil or it just doesn’t look right on me. I use Mac lip-liner (pencil) in the colors Brick and Beet.
My favorite perfume is Jessica McClintock. I’m really picky when it comes to fragrances…some can give me a headache. Years ago a waitress up in Lake Tahoe was wearing it …she smelled so clean and fresh, I asked her what perfume she was wearing, she told me it was Jessica McClintock….that very day I went to get some! I get more compliments when I wear it…someone is always telling me that I smell good! I love that! Other than Bobbi Brown Beach, this is the only fragrance I wear…it’s that wonderful!
I also LOVE Bobbi Brown’s Beach Cologne and lotion (available on amazon). I’ve just recently discovered Bobbi Brown Beach Cologne and I love it! It smells like summer! The first time I smelled it, wonderful memories of summer vacations to Catalina Island came flooding in, as special scents always do! It has the fragrance of sun-tan lotion mixed with the freshness of a sea breeze. This has become my new summer perfume. I love the companion lotion too! Wearing it reminds me of the blessings of the good ol summertime! It makes me feel happy!
Believe it or not, I still have questions left! So at some point down the road I will be bringing you part four!
But for now, I have to tend to my home, my tomato and basil plants, work on some Sugar Pie projects, get ready for company and have lots of summertime fun with my sweet Summer Rose!
Please know that I read all of your precious comments, and as I do I pray for you! I so appreciate it when you say hello, it’s what keeps me doing this blog, so keep’em comin’ ! I also love reading where y’all are from!
Y’all are always welcome at my Sugar Pie Farmhouse! (Yee Haw!)
Aunt Ruthie
First of all I love love, love your site and visit it daily. You are truly a blessing to me. I wanted to let you know that Dollywood is near me and you are going to love it. I eat at the Apple Barn a couple of times a year and that you will also love. Be sure and have breakfast at the Applewoood Grill which is a part of the apple barn . The breakfast is wonderful and they have the most beautiful songbird area right in the restaurant. Dont forget to have one of their fried apple pies with homemade ice cream before you leave. You will love Pigeon Forge with all its country ware shops. I cant wait to see the pictures of your wonderful home. Keep up the good work. Sharon, in the smokey mountains of North Carolina
I’m so glad you’re back and had a good vacation…I love reading new posts! I’ve been through 3 divorces with my mother and having a strong marriage is super, super important to me. We’ve almost been married a year and so far things are going good, but I love the inspiration I get from your blog! Thank you!
We have the same excellent taste in vacation spots. I may see you there and I know I’d recognize ya!
I just LOVE your blog so much!! You always have the sweetest spirit and I love your advice about marriage. That is sooo true. My husband and I have been married almost 25 years now and have 4 children, and I couldn’t agree more with everything you said.
Have a great rest of your summer and I can’t wait for your next post! :)
I think I was having Sugar Pie withdrawals while you were gone. Ha! Thanks so much for answering these questions. You’re such a role model for me. You seem to have the perfect life, something I strive for but after one divorce…sometimes I wonder if I’ve done something wrong. :( I continue to work on myself everyday, though, to be the best person I can be! :) You certainly are an inspiration. Welcome back!
I love question and answer posts! How fun! Thanks so much for sharing all that about you! :)
Loved this post, Ruthann! Thanks for sharing your heart and answering questions. I know it takes time, but we are all SO inspired by your posts and your sweet, gentle wisdom. I know you will love the great Smokey Mountains. Chad and I went on our honeymoon there over twenty years ago, so that area has a special place in my heart! :o)
I love JM perfume too, but since my husband gave me some Ralph Lauren ‘Romance’ for Christmas..I’ve been enjoying it too. I’ll have to check out the Bobbi Brown Beach scent…it sounds wonderful.
Thank you most of all for sharing such godly wisdom on the topic of marriage. So many need to hear it today, and I agree totally. Many years ago, I read this, “Don’t give 50/50….give 100/100..and that advice has served us well! That and lots of prayer! We also never go to bed upset or angry. Commitment, prayer, and God’s grace are the perfect ingredients for a happy marriage!
Take care and lots of hugs,
Amy O.
Oh I just love the fact that you guys had a Wild, Wild West show with a horse named Buckshot! haha That just about made my day! ;)
You are SO right on… praying and going to church with your spouse is the most crucial ingredient for a God-honoring, successful marriage and family. :)
I LOVED The Five Love Languages book… I recommend it to everyone. I am also halfway through The Five Love Languages of God… it is amazing, as expected, so far. It is really neat to see how Gary Chapman illustrates God loving US through our own personal love language. It is eye-opening and humbling at the same time.
I am glad y’all had a fantastic trip to CA! :)
Melissa
It was so much fun learnin’ all about you and your family! You are a breath of fresh air, and I’ve been to the Smokies and you’re makin’ me want to wander down your way this fall and see what I can see! LOVE the story and wonder if your family is involved in the wild wild west show?
XOXO
Joni
Aunt Ruthie,
Just love your advise, you make us all better people. I go back and read different stories on your blog. You just make people feel happy. You go girl!
Hugs,
Donna
Thanks for sharing…
Our family is going to Pigeon Forge and Dollywood at the end of the month of July. We are excited.
Welcome home…we too just got back from CA…and Vegas….
I remember buckshot and the wild wild west…oh how I loved it down in Branson and if I would ever get another chance to move back there I would do it in a heart beat….I loved it there it just felt like home…
Thank you for taking the time to answer the questions and for being
such an inspiration to all of us….you give us all hope for a better life
and with the grace of God we can make it happen….
Sweet Blessings…
Tonja
Aunt Ruthie,
I just really enjoy your blog. Thanks for the tips about the marriage and book. My husband and I have trouble with date night but I’m hoping to be able to get into a routine soon. I agree with everything you said about praying and going to church together. I was raised in church and my hubby sometimes balks about it but I enjoy watching him grow as he volunteers to usher and help with our youth group at church.
We lived in MO for 10 years and both of my kids were born there. I loved it! I can see why you like it so much. If it weren’t for family in IN I’d move back in a heartbeat.
Thanks for sharing your lipstick shade, I love a good shade I’m kinda fair though and blond so I have to be careful.
Enjoy your Summer with your DD and hopefully you’ll get that Vacation in Pigeon Forge. I’d love to go there too.
Carey
Welcome back from your vacation! Thank you for answering these questions for us. :)
Love Languages is a great book. In our church we meet with engaged couples to prepare them for marriage. Part of our preparation is to show this video and give them this book. They always appreciate and learn so much from it. I wish I had it when I was engaged (over 20 years ago) we kind of just figured it out, but this is so much easier!
Have to go check out the fragrances you recommend, I am due for something new! Thanks! Blessings to you and your family
Hi Aunt Ruthie,
First I want to say that I love your website and so enjoy reading your blog. I wanted to comment about the Smoky Mountains. My husband and I along with our daughter and my parents go there every year for vacation. All the places you named are great. The Apple Barn has the best food, all home cooked. We eat there at least 2 time in a week. If you like southern gospel music that is the place to go. You can walk along the streets in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and hear gospel music all the time. Dollywood is a wonderful family park. You can hear gospel music throughout the whole park and in the Fall (which is when we go), they have their National Gospel Festival for a month. They host professional groups in October and you can attend the concerts for free. This is our favorite place to vacation and we hope to one day be able to move there. We feel the same way about it like you and your husband did do about Branson. If you go, I hope you and your family have a great time.
Denise
I am a Jessica McClintock girl too! :) My favorite, I have worn it for years. I loved reading your story of following your dreams like you and your hubby did. My husband and I have a dream, but it doesn’t ever seem the right time to jump on it. But I know God will shine that light when it’s time. :)
Hugs,
Teresa

I have to tell ya! I do hope you get a chance to visit TN, we live here and there is nothing like it! Our little family has been blessed to be able to see the country with my Husband being in the military but there is nothing like The Smokey Mountains! And if ya go to the Apple Barn the Apple Fritters are so good you will certainly want to marry them! Trust me!
Dear One,
Blessings to you from Home Haven nestled in the Kansas Flinthills.
Enjoying your blog.
God is real! The Lord told me to type that…you’ll know why.
Blessings,
~Deanna~
Welcome home, and thanks for sharing so much! I’ve missed an update over the last few weeks so it is good to know your back! I hope the vacation to CA was wonderful!!!
I loved reading your Q&A! I live about 30 minutes from Pigeon Forge. It is so beautiful here and hot. Make sure you vfew visit Splash Country when you go to Dollywood. :) We were in the Smokey Mountains a few weeks ago and saw 2 black bears in Cades Cove. They have a nice little picnic area right before you ride into Cades Cove, an 11 mile loop through the mountains filled with beauty of all kinds, tons of deer, old churches, log cabins, I know you would love this place. Also, The Apple Barn is awesome and I think you will want to marry their gift shop. ;) As for the Christmas Village, they now have a hotel to go along with the Christmas Village, it is beautiful! Have fun when you visit our wonderful state of Tennessee.
Blessings,
Patty
Nice to have you back. I have missed reading your wonderful stories but I understand that summer is meant for family & vacations and less time on the computer.
We visit Gatlinburg at least every other year. It is so beautiful. We have never visit DollyWorld though. One year, I will get there. The only sad thing about Gatlinburg is the fact that the pollution is really killing the beautiful trees up in the mountains. I have noticed more & more when we go to visit that the leaves on the trees are not as beautiful as I remember as a child. Don’t get me wrong, they are still pretty but not as pretty as before. Wish we could go back in time somedays. Anyway, again welcome back.
PS: One place that you should visit will in Gatlinburg is Biltmore Estates, which is actually in NC. I think it only takes 20 or 30 minutes to get there. It is a beautiful mansion with a gorgeous garden.
Welcome back!
I enjoy your posts so much!
Hi Aunt Ruthie!
Welcome home! I do look forward to your updates.
I don’t comment often but I do read ALWAYS!
Thanks again.
Peggy
Ruth, I just love visiting with you. You have such a way of comforting a “homesick” soul. I am in the process of getting my house on the market to sell so that I can get back closer to home, and family instead of living in the “rat race” of a city. I was in Piegon Forge in April for my step son’s wedding and it was heavenly. I got the opportunity to eat at the Apple Barn and it was great. You will love it. I also scoped out the Christmas shop. So divine. I can’t pass a Christmas shop without going in. On our way back to Maryland, we stopped in Kingsport Tn. to do some antiquing. Ever been there. It was AWESOME! I’m actually heading your way over the 4th of July to meet up with my family to surprise my father for his 70th birthday. I’m so excited. This will be my first time in the Ozarks. Any neat places you RECOMMEND are must sees?
Thanks so much for sharing such uplifting and honest notes from the heart with us.
Sisters,
Cindy
Thank you for sharing your life with us! I’m just 2 hours from Branson so I know why you live here, amazing indeed! I’ll be looking forward to part 4 and the home tour!
Welcome Back!
We’ve missed you!
Well Howdy Ruth Ann,
We have missed you!! Hope you had great time. Sugar Pie Farmhouse has been such a blessing to me, and I thank God for you and your wonderful inspiration!! Visiting with you is so much fun! I wonder, have you ever thought about doing a retreat/workshop/Chirstian girl getaway in Branson?
Bye for now, Penny
Hi Aunt
Ruthie! I was so excited to see you had posted a new blog when I checked my e-mail this morning, it made my day. I cant tell you how your blog has blessed my life, I use your blogs for inspiration and it keeps me moving and working. I especially touched when I read a blog yesterday where you said you start listening to Christmas music in August and you start decorating early. As excited as I an about summer (and not being cold), it made me start thinking of fall and Christmas and warmed my heart.
How wonderful that your husband got to spend those last years with his father, God works in mysterious ways, doesnt he?!
Warm Blessings, Erica
Ruthie, wonderful to see you home and posting. What interesting answers you had for all of our questions. (Thanks for answering mine so thoroughly…hope you all have a lot of good times.)
Thank you for visiting my little corner. I hope that all is well with your mother and have tucked her into my prayers along with my own mom.
Welcome Home, Ruthie! Glad you had a great trip! You will love Pigeon Forge! We live about 30 mins from there and go there often! Apple Barn is wonderful! I did a post about it back in the Fall! The Somkey Mountains are breathtaking! And, Dolly Wood is a must for everyone!!! You will love it and it is soooo you! We usually get season tickets to DW and go often, but my favorite time of the year to go is Fall!!! There is no place like it in the Fall! The Christmas Place is magical!!! And, the new Christmas Place Inn is GORGEOUS!!! I did a post on it back in January! It is a trip that y’all will really enjoy!!! I grew up here and never get tired of going!!! Nancy
I grew up in Missouri, and I get a bit homesick at times reading your blog. It’s wonderful to find a positive, Christian blog out there! I LOVE your home, and your awesome kids, and the genuine warmth and caring from you. God Bless you. You make my day !
Welcome home! Thank-you for having such an inspiring blog. There are so many negatives out there, it’s refreshing to hear what you have to say.
Yay! I always look forward to reading your latest blog post. Oh, and I tried Sister Lizzie’s Southern Buttermilk Pie…YUMMY!! I gave some to my parents and they loved it, too! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Hey Ruthie,
I just love your blog! Thank you for doing your Q & A. I’m waiting for pictures from your lovely home too. But I realize that we all get super busy in the summer. My oldest is in elementary school and is still in school. We have year-round schedule here. I can’t wait for his summer so we can go to Sea World down the street, the San Diego Zoo again, and maybe Legoland this year too. We haven’t been there yet. And they absolutely LOVE the zoo here! All this packed into a 6 week summer break! Lol. I hope you get your chance to see Dolly’s place there. I would love to see it one day too.
I spent my honeymoon in Branson & Eureka Springs, so I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the area. I’ve told my now-grown children for years about the simple joys of Silver Dollar City & how I first heard the Passion Story in that lovely theater- I hope to get back there someday.
Dear Ruthie,
You are a blessed delight!
And I’m happy to say that although I go by the name Dolley, you and I share the same first names, Ruth Ann. Love that I’m in your dear company.
Love, love, love what you had to say about having a happy marriage. I have been married to Tom Carlson for 40 years…best years of my life. We are Christians and I so agree about establishing your marriage/family on God’s truths: His Word, Prayer and JOY!
I’ve written a book on marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Gifts From The Heart – subtitle, Thoughtful Ways to Bless Your Marriage With Honor, Romance, Fun & Love…would love to gift you with a copy. Let me know:)
Blessings,
(Ruth Ann) Dolley Carlson
Hi “Aunt Ruthie”! It was so nice to finally meet you in person at La Maison! I hope you were blessed with relaxation on your California vacation. Glad to have you back brewing up your own personal brand of sweetness and posting at Sugar Pie Farmhouse again.
Blessings –
elizabeth
(aka lizzieddesigns!!)
Glad you are back. Have missed your website. I enjoy it so much. Thanks for answering all of our questions and taking the precious time to do so.
Another question: Do you wear Mineral Makeup or what kind do you like if you don’t? What style do you ask for when you get your hair cut and how do you style it at home? I love it!!
Thanks…Linda
Enjoy your trip to Tennessee. Our son and family live near Memphis. We have been to Gatlinburg twice and loved it. The Mountains are wonderful. We enjoyed the Apple Barn and Dolly Wood so much. Cute gifts and decorating items. You will find something for your darling kitchen there I know. Lot of shopping places to visit and good food!
Linda
Missed you while you were gone Ruthann!!
glad you had a great vacation and am looking forward to your new posts
have fun with your sweet girl this summer xoxo
Hey, I just wanted to tell you, I live in the mountains of western north carolina, and i spend as much time as I can in pigeon forge. You have to go to Cades Cove, its about 10 miles from pigeon forge. You will love it, anyone who comes to our beautiful mountains, is hooked for life!! That’s why I grew up on a farm here, in Madison COunty, NC, 15 miles from TN. My parents came here on vacation, and never left!!If you need any free info about our area, let me know, I can answer just about any question you might have about what to do here. God Bless!
Aunt Ruthie,
Once again, you’ve done a wonderful job on your posts. You inspire me to be more of a homemaker and helpmeet. My Mother was a working woman whom I rarely saw so all of these fabulous domesticities I’ve learned on my own or from my grandmothers. I really appreciate your yearning to help us new homemakers and your love of your home.
Just so you know, the Apple Barn is deee-lish!!!! It has the best apple butter I ever tasted in my life!
You take care now, ya hear?!
It is so refreshing to read your blog. I love how encouraging you are to all of us ladies. Life can be so hectic and it’s nice to be reminded to slow down and take care of our husbands and family:) Thank you for the time you take to share your time and heart with us.
blessings,
aimee
I so love your blog! I think it is so encouraging and I hope that you continue to write such wonderful posts. My family LOVES Branson and Silver Dollar City. It always feels like such a wholesome, fun place to visit and we have enjoyed staying in different cabins in the area. Anyway…keep up the good work! You are such an encouragement and I enjoy learning from you
I just love your web site!!! You are such an inspiration to me. I wait anxiously for your next post. You help me be a better mama, a better wife and help me stay grounded. I love that, “You” love the lord as much as I do. I count my blessings daily and am very thankful for what he has given us. Thank you for opening up your heart and your home. Chao!! :-)
Blessings,
Nicole from Austin Texas
Since I’m a purse nut and you’re such a good sport about answering all these questions, I was wondering what kind of purses you like, big or small, how often you change them, and do you always have one with you? Thanks for everything!
I love your story about Branson. I saw a show on the Duggar family where they went to Branson and the Wild West Show. Was this your Wild West Show?
Thank you again for taking the time to post. I’m sure it adds a lot of responsibilities to your already-busy life, but I REALLY appreciate it. :0)
Hi Ruthann!
I love your story about the Wild West Show your family had. As much as you’ve told us about your life, I never expected that! Totally cool! You are such an interesting lady! I always feel warm and cosy about life when I read your blog. BTW, if you pop over to my blog right now I am having a 100th post giveaway! Until next time, Wendy xx
I love your website and wonderful values I find it very inspiring. Sadly I did not grow up in a religous environment (ie we did not visit a church or read scripture) but try to live a wholesome life embracing the values you speak about. I wondered what version of the bible you got all your quotes from as I would love to get it. Also it would be great if we could print out some of your quotes and put them round our homes. Maybe you could do a download sometime.
Everyday when I ride my bike I sing I love the lord just like you said and it makes me feel good don’t care who hears.
Keep up with your site it gives people much pleasure.
Ruthie….we’ve been to the Applebarn in TN! it’s such a fun fun place….you MUST eat at the Applebarn restaurant and have Chicken pot pie……yummy! and the Sweet Tea……mmm goodness! I’m from MI where ya just can’t get a good Sweet Tea so I make it up and my family says…..would ya like some tea with your sugar?? haha enjoy! I just loved seeing those photos of the Fall trees…….I love summer but those colors, scrumptious!
Ruth if you do make the trip to Pigeon Forge and go to the Apple Barn be sure to notice the signs with humorous sayings and sponged borders hanging for sale along the staircase going upstairs. Why? Because I make those!
I would also recommend The Old Mill. I highly recommend the restaurant at both the Old Mill and the Apple Barn.
If you have time to go to the Cades Cove area of the park be sure to check out Apple Valley Farms in Townsend. You will love it, I promise.
Carrie
I will have to check for the Bobby Brown fragrance as it seems to be a mixture of my favorite summer aromas. My birthday is coming up. :)
Really looking forward to more pictures of your house!
My mid-life baby was a boy who is now in college. Sigh. Times goes so fast.
Did your family start Sadlebrook? I love that area! Glad you made it home safely and thanks for sharing how you and your family made the move to Branson. I used to be in the Silver Dollar City Craft Guild years ago when my children where young. It was their favorite place to visit!
Catherine
Just a quick hello from Fort Bragg NC ;) I really enjoy reading your blog and really look forward to your new posts. My husband is in the Army and is getting ready for his second deployment so it has been a tough past year for me. Its hard to make friends and meet good people with moving around so much, so its nice to know that where ever I am I always know where to find you ( i hope that didnt come out sounding creepy lol ;)
If you make it to the Smokies, you must go to the Apple Barn! The best apple fritters and apple stack cakes, fried apple pies and more. Don’t pass up the candy shop and ice cream shop! Just seeing that picture of the sign brought back so many memories. My late husband and I would travel to Tn twice a year or so, and Apple Barn was the highlight of our visit. It’s been a long time since I was there—my husband has been gone almost 3 years, and it was a couple of years prior to his death when we were there last. I hope to take our son, who was 5 mo old when my husband passed and is now 3, there soon. If there is a waitress there named Wanda (remember it’s been awhile since I was there!), tell her a couple from Ky who always used to ask for her sent you!! (even tho she probably won’t remember!) Have fun!
Hi there! I just found your amazing blog today. I love it! I love what you have to say about marriage, and faith and all things house-related. What a blessing you are! I’m so happy to have found you. :)
I love this site! It brings joy and inspiration to my life. What an interesting ministry. I just wanted to say that I am a madly in love with my husband newlywed, who received The Love Languages book as a wedding gift. I have found it not only to be helpful in my romantic relationship, but also with members of my family and co-workers, to a point. GREAT book.
I always love to see those sweet nostalgic pictures. That alone inspires me! Thanks for all your encouraging words–that part about smelling good for him really stuck out for me. I think I’ll be spritzing some tea-rose cologne on before he comes home from work today…hmm maybe I’ll add a little lipstick too!
I’m new to your website but I am going to be a regular!!!
I soaked up your blog from every angle!! LOL
Bless your heart!!

The Smokey Mountains are a GREAT place to vacation! I just got back from my honeymoon in Gatlinburg and we had so much fun. The Incredible Christmas Place is a must-see and I just had to tell you about The Old Mill and all of the shopping they have there. Don’t miss their kitchen store!
Aunt Ruthie!
In response to your answer on the “keeping the husband happy”, specifically #5 (regarding The Five love Languages), I highly recommend Dr. Chapman’s other book, “The Four Seasons of Marriage”, which also has an additional 4 book fiction series based on “The Four Seasons of Marriage”~~1) “It Happens Every Spring” 2) “Summer Breeze” 3) “Falling For You Again” and 4) “Winter is Past”~~~~~these four books have a very “Steel Magnolia-ish” style to them…very easy reads, but LOADED with insight!
Hope you’ll check them out!

I haven’t visited in a couple months and was a delight it was to see what you have been up to. Your site is so inspiring is so many ways.
Just had to write to say Jessica McClintock is my most favorite perfume, I think I have been wearing it for 20 years! My second favorite, only for summer, if Bobbie Brown Beach and yes it does remind me of my teenage summers! I think that it smells like sea and ski or some other sun tan lotion. That is when we used sun tan lotion instead of sunscreen.
Love to read your blog and your new site is super. Have a wonderful summer.
I love your blog. It is so inspirational! I have a long way to go to have your attitude, but I’m trying!
I have a couple of questions for you as well. Maybe you can answer them in a future Q&A post! LOL. I’d love to know more about your cowgirl boots (where you got them, what kind they are) and about what brands and scents of candles you like best. Thanks!
Great post! Thanks for sharing all the goodness on canning! Keep blogging, your blog is truly a blessing! Blessings!

Hello Aunt Ruthie,
I am painting sets for our upcoming Christmas service. I’ll be painting several 5×9 foot murals of mountains and your photo of Cal. mountains are just the inspiration I’ve been looking for. May I print a copy to view as I paint? PS I’ve visited your site before and appreciate your focus on home, family and your faith! God bless you and yours this Christmas. Kandice
