This spring I pulled out this old chippy window that came from my grandma and grandpa’s house. After several years of living in their home, they had their old windows changed out for less drafty ones. My dad saved the old windows for my sister and I knowing that we would cherish them. I love thinking how they looked out this window to enjoy the view of the sweet tangerines and lemons dripping from their fruit trees…and to see if their tomato vines had any ripe ones to gather…and to see the familiar car of a loved one pulling into the driveway coming for a visit which would give my grandma a head start on putting the coffee pot on and dishing up a beautiful array of her delicious Italian cookies! That’s the Italian way, to feed and pamper everyone who walks through the door!
A few years ago I found this dear signature quilt at a flea market and loved the simplicity of it and most of all the hand-stitched autographs. This is definitely one of those things that I wish could talk! It’s all hand done and the cotton is so soft and maybe even a bit sun-faded from hanging out on the clothesline. In doing some research I found that some quilts were made to raise funds for various causes from missionary work to supporting troops during a war. That would explain the names of both men and women on it. The finished quilt may have been auctioned off or people may have paid a fee, often ten cents, to have their name placed on a block in the quilt. Perhaps it was a prayer quilt! Whatever the history of this sweet comforter I’d like to believe that it kept a loved one warm as they drifted off to sleep under the silvery rays of the glowing moonlight and twinkling stars. (heehee!)
