fried-pies-278-400x300“These are my great-grandmother’s pies. I remember Lela standing in the kitchen humming as she fried these, placing the crispy treats on a paper towel-lined plate next to the stove as she dipped more into the hot oil in her cast-iron skillet. The entire house smelled of peaches because that was her favorite kind of fruit pie.”  Christy Jordan-Excerpt from Southern Plate Cookbook

Springtime Decorating

Hello Sugar Pies! Well, I’ve been so busy with my spring cleaning and decluttering I haven’t had a chance to post a few pictures of my spring decorating. And since it’s almost summertime and I’m gearing up to redecorate for it I figured I had better post my spring photos before it’s too late! Lol!

IMG_6152This spring I pulled out this old chippy window that came from my grandma and grandpa’s house. After several years of living in their home, they had their old windows changed out for less drafty ones. My dad saved the old windows for my sister and I knowing that we would cherish them. I love thinking how they looked out this window to enjoy the view of the sweet tangerines and lemons dripping from their fruit trees…and to see if their tomato vines had any ripe ones to gather…and to see the familiar car of a loved one pulling into the driveway coming for a visit which would give my grandma a head start on putting the coffee pot on and dishing up a beautiful array of her delicious Italian cookies! That’s the Italian way, to feed and pamper everyone who walks through the door!

Michaels was having a 40% off sale on their flowers so I picked up some of their very real looking roses and laid them in this white enamelware basket. They look just like the kind of roses my grandmother had in her yard. I know for a while silk flowers became a little outdated, which didn’t keep me from decorating with them but thanks to Joanna Gaines and her decorating influence she brought them back in style, especially the realistic ones. Having fresh flowers is wonderful but they aren’t as practical when you’re creating a decorative vignette that you want to last for a season unless you grow them in your yard, of course, which would be delightful!

I also gathered a few of my vintage aqua-blue mason jars that coordinated with the blue gingham dishtowel. As you can see I filled one of the jars half full of water to give the rose an even more realistic look.

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love”

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Down in the meadow, the flowers appear,

Blossoms all pink and white make every garden bright,

Sing, Sing, Springtime is here!

~German Folk Song

IMG_6127A few years ago I found this dear signature quilt at a flea market and loved the simplicity of it and most of all the hand-stitched autographs. This is definitely one of those things that I wish could talk! It’s all hand done and the cotton is so soft and maybe even a bit sun-faded from hanging out on the clothesline. In doing some research I found that some quilts were made to raise funds for various causes from missionary work to supporting troops during a war. That would explain the names of both men and women on it. The finished quilt may have been auctioned off or people may have paid a fee, often ten cents, to have their name placed on a block in the quilt. Perhaps it was a prayer quilt! Whatever the history of this sweet comforter I’d like to believe that it kept a loved one warm as they drifted off to sleep under the silvery rays of the glowing moonlight and twinkling stars. (heehee!)

And I’d like to believe that Lulla, Emma and Virginia were the best of friends!

So I had my mantle painted white! It was a dark stained brown and I’ve been wanting to brighten up the room by painting it white for a long time and I love it! I brought out my canvas cow and set two dairy cans on either side filled with overgrown looking greens and blossoms. Simple and uncluttered…and that makes me happy!

I also had the back fireplace wall painted white! I plan to do the whole room as time allows but I’m loving the fresh feeling it gives the room.

On my kitchen farm table sits a very old pie safe, which I’ll talk about in a future post. I love the way the warm sunshine pours into the room every morning.
