Take a peek inside my pantry!

Hello sweet Sugar Pie! I’m so happy you’re here! Thank you so much honey for stopping by! I love when you come to visit me! You know why? Because if you enjoy all things farmy, vintage, cozy, homey, and wholesome, filled with goodness and some delicious homemade pie thrown in, like I do, then we are sister-friends! We have a special bond, a knowing and understanding of the good things in life…the things that matter most…God, family, home and country! These are treasures that we need to join forces to preserve!

me and mama

When you come to visit me here at Sugar Pie Farmhouse I want you to feel so welcome, so comforted, and so loved! I want you to feel my heartfelt, kindred-friendship with you…like we’re dear neighbors that love to share things and chat across our backyard fence about our family, our home, and all things dear to our hearts.  I’d be happy to share a cup of sugar with sweet, wonderful you!

Can I just tell you sister I’m so happy spring is here!! I could shout it from the rooftop!! We had an especially cold and gray winter here in the Ozarks of Southern Missouri! I sometimes can feel a little blues-y when the sun stays hidden for too long… so, when it finally poked its warm, golden rays through the clouds I wanted to dance a jig! Yee Haw! In fact it got me so excited that I actually wanted to start my spring cleaning. My first stop was my pantry which had become so cluttered it was embarrassing, especially because it’s open for all the world to see, at least to everyone that comes over. I go inside my pantry every day and each time I would let out a stressful sigh and say to myself Ugg! I really need to clean out this pantry!!! Can you relate?? Please tell me “YES”!! Lol!

So I finally did it! I cleared the clutter, wiped down the shelves, and removed any expired goods. It took two days and I feel like a new person! Lol! It’s like a weight has been removed from my shoulders. So now I’m going to share my clean pantry with you in hopes it will motivate you to start your spring cleaning because you will feel so wonderful!

Before I point the way to my pantry, and just for fun, click on this link for my Farmhouse Radio to add some vintage tunes for your reading enjoyment! The link will open a new tab and take you to Youtube and you’ll hear the music by Johnny Mercer… then click the Sugar Pie Farmhouse tab and come on back here! Johnny Mercer is one of my most favorite 1940’s musicians! It’s like ear-candy! Lol!

If you’ve seen my pantry before then you know my baking center is attached to it. There’s a pass through window that comes in handy when I’m gathering ingredients to cook a meal.  I took everything off of the shelves and countertop and gave it a good scrubbing. I’m a big fan of  Sandra Felton and her books on housekeeping and organization. She uses what she calls the Mount Vernon Method when it comes to cleaning. This is the method used to clean George Washington’s Estate. Basically you clean one room at a time completely before you begin cleaning another area. When cleaning your whole house Sandra recommends starting at the front door and then working clockwise around the room. It took me two days, on and off, to finish cleaning and decluttering my pantry/baking center.

Once everything was clean and clutter free I dolled up the shelves of my baking center for spring and summer. My dear friend Cat from The Vintage Housewife, (who also used to be my next door neighbor. How lucky was I!), she gave me the idea of putting cute little baskets on the shelves. I found them at Michaels on sale for $3.50 each. Then I lined the baskets with a variety of vintage tablecloths that I’ve collected through the years. The colorful fruit and floral designs of the fabric poking out of the baskets reminds me of summertime picnics…and that makes my heart happy!

IMG_7505

I also gave my vintage general store scale a fresh little makeover by adoring it with some faux veggies. This scale used to hang in my mother-in-law’s country kitchen up in the mountains where my hubby grew up and is a special keepsake to me.

IMG_7508

I didn’t realize how much stress my messie pantry was causing me. A cluttered home, or areas of our home truly can cause us stress. It’s a thing! Researchers have concluded that a cluttered home can be a stressful home. “Clutter is an overabundance of possessions that collectively create chaotic and disorderly living spaces,” said Joseph Ferrari, a professor of psychology at DePaul University in Chicago who studies the causes of clutter and its impact on emotional well-being.

I truly believe that clutter affects women especially with overwhelming stress  because we were born with a Nesting Instinct. When mama’s nest is a mess then we feel out of control, we can’t find things, we feel agitated, we feel like a failure,  we feel anxious and a variety of other negative emotions which cause our peace and joy to fade. And we know that stress can cause all sorts of physical ailments.

The strain of a messy home is compounded when we add other difficult issues like financial burdens, illness, and relationship problems. It’s so important to maintain a tidy home as best as we can so it can be a place of peace and comfort through all the seasons of life.

This book, Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson is one that I own and love… “Home Comforts is based on Cheryl’s domestic education, which she acquired while growing up on a farm in the hills of Greene County, in southwestern Pennsylvania, from her grandmother’s, aunts, and mother. Learning from the distinct domestic styles of her native Appalachian relatives and her Italian immigrant relatives…” Cheryl truly helps us understand that homekeeping can be an art, and a well kept home is a home well loved. A tidy home filled with touches of beauty brings comfort and joy to our families and ourselves.

So let’s take good care of our homes and in doing so we will be taking care of ourselves and our family. Just do a little at a time and in due season we will reap a reward, as the Bible says!

It’s such a happy feeling to look around at a clean and tidy home. Once it’s clean and clutter free we can add some cozy touches of beauty. I love adding a warm glow especially in my kitchen under the upper cupboards. I got this milk bottle nightlight from Cracker Barrel a few years ago but…

Take a peek inside my pantry! (2)

I also found this darling oil lamp nightlight here and Mason Jar Nightlight here! It gives your kitchen a comforting glow at night when all the other lights are turned off. And if you need to go to the kitchen in the middle of the night it adds just enough light so you won’t bump into something when you go to get that drink of water.

IMG_7507

To add an element of fun to my spring cleaning project I put on my cute granny apron…the sun-faded green one hanging near my pantry door…then I put on some happy 1940 tunes and lit my most favorite springtime candle in all the land…

51Nq3x8yUlL

Vintage Lilac from 1803 Candles! Oh my goodness! That aroma! Talk about dreamy southern charm! Close your eyes and you’ll imagine yourself on a sprawling, wooden wrap-around porch in the summertime, you’re sitting in a rocking chair with a icy glass of sweet tea in your hand…the sun is setting and the heat of the day has warmed the lilac blossoms on the vines that are draping heavy above the old wooden porch posts and ahhhhh… it smells like heaven! IMG_7469 IMG_7471I love to adorn little nooks and crannies of my home with things that I love. Things that make my heart happy. A while back I found this vintage Farm Journal’s Complete Pie Cookbook at a flea market and brought it home where it belongs! Lol!

IMG_7510

I’ve had this old farmhouse screen door for years. My favorite thing is that it squeaks! Lol! I had it in two other houses before this one. I keep debating whether or not I should paint over the words on the door that I painted so long ago. What do you think? Should I put a fresh coat of white paint on it? Or keep it like it is? Leave me a comment below!

IMG_7479

To be honest, cleaning my pantry was a whole-lotta work! I went through every single canned good and packaged food item to make sure they were not past their expiration date. I wiped down each shelf with hot soapy water and then put everything back. But it wasn’t as hard as I made it out to be in my head! I was procrastinating because I thought it was going to take a week and I didn’t think I had that kind of time. The key to getting something done is to just START!! JUST START! And before you know it you’ll be amazed at how good it feels to have conquered it!

IMG_7480

Now that it’s clean I sometimes go into my pantry for nothing more than to admire how tidy it is! Lol! Is that dorky? Haha!

IMG_7486

When I designed my pantry I wanted it to remind me of an old general store! I found the metal Eggs, Milk, Coffee, Flour, Sugar and Bread signs at Gordmans several years ago and they were the perfect addition. Sometime you’ll have to check out my online General Store here!

Isn’t this print of an old fashioned General Store by artist Doris Lee adorable?! Ahhh! The good old days!

IMG_7489

My rolling pin is now easily found and ready to go when I get a hankerin’ to make pie!

IMG_7488 IMG_7487

Sun-faded cotton aprons = comfort food, love and hugs!

IMG_7485

On my upper shelves I have some of my favorite vintage kitchen goodies (notice the wood thread spool that replaced the knob on the coffee pot lid! That’s what I call making do with what you have! I love it!!). I had a lot more cute kitchen stuff that I’ve gathered over the years on my shelves but it started to look too cluttered. I decided I don’t have to have everything I love on my shelves. Instead I can keep things simple and rotate them from time to time.

IMG_7476

Well there you have it! My spring-cleaned pantry! Now on to my bedroom closet! Lol! I’m going to remind myself to…JUST START! Lol!

Written by Aunt Ruthie on December 21st, 2018

Welcome! Dear Sugar Pie! Happy Christmas bells are ringing at Sugar Pie Farmhouse! You know what? Life has been a little cray-cray around here! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat down to finish this post and for some reason life-stuff has called me away! I think I’ve had too much on my plate! I’m sure you could relate to that!! LOL!

As Andy Williams’ old song goes “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”.  If you were here in person I would greet you with a warm hug, hand you a mug of hot cocoa with fluffy marshmallows on top and sit you down near the fire for a fun chat all about the blessings of Christmas. But since I can’t do that the next best thing is to welcome you with open arms via this little-o blog of mine to celebrate this glorious season!

So darlin’ go grab yourself something yummy to drink, turn on your favorite Christmas music and even light a candle to create a festive, Christmas-y ambiance! Let me show you around…

danish

This year I  was  inspired to create a simple, fresh and merry scandinavian feel for my entryway. Part of my husband and children’s ancestry is Danish and so I thought it would be a perfect nod to their heritage! Golden candlelight glowing through the windows, fresh green wreaths, frosty ice skates, a cozy quilt and birch logs for the fire.

As I decorated I remembered a darling  book I had read years ago called Papa’s Wife, a true story about a swedish family of 10 that moved to America in 1924. It follows the love story and journey  between a pastor and his wife Maria who was a spunky, fun loving mama of 8. Here’s a snippet of the book:

“By the week before Christmas, the farmhouse gleamed with exciting aromas of cakes and cookies and spicy delicacies filled the air. Papa and Nim came in from the hills one evening carrying a big Christmas tree which they had cut from the forest beyond the lake. After supper the tree was set up in the center of the big living room and the fun of decorating began. Mama stirred the rice which had cooked all day. She poured in a little more milk to make the rice pudding especially good.” ~Thyra Ferre Bjorn, Papa’s Wife
The book is very old and out of print, but you can still find it on Ebay, at used books stores or even HERE, it’s one of my favorite books in the whole wide world!

Just like every year I bring out our sweet baby Jesus in the manger. I’ve had this since my kids were babies, so it’s tradition! I wanted to share a sweet an adorable story that I found years ago…

Screen Shot 2018-12-21 at 12.39.09 PM

“It was the day after Christmas. A pastor of a church in San Francisco was looking over the front lawn through the window when he noticed that the baby Jesus was missing from the Manger display. He hurried outside and saw a little boy pulling a red wagon down the sidewalk. There, was the baby Jesus, tucked under a quilt. The minister walked up to the boy and said, “Well, where did you get your passenger, my fine friend?”
The little boy replied, “I got Him at church.”
“And why did you take Him?”
The boy explained, “Well, about a week before Christmas, I prayed to the little Lord Jesus, and I told Him if He would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give Him a ride around the block in it.” ~Author unknown
(Oh Honey!! I call that God’s wink-and-a-smile!)

IMG_7141

“The Yule log is big and sturdy, a last gracious gift from a big old maple. The family is all here, the house bulges. The smell of pine and buttered popcorn, of mince pies and bayberry candles is all through the house, and most pleasant.” ~ Gladys TaborIMG_7282

One Holy Night A baby made the difference for the whole world.

Joy to the World! The reason for the season! Jesus is the reason why we celebrate with childlike wonder and excitement!  He is the reason why we make the effort to add beauty and sparkling light to our homes…in honor of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords!

Splendor and majesty are before Him; Strength and joy in His dwelling place. 1 Chronicles 16:27

‘I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone! The Savior – yes the Messiah, the Lord  has been born tonight in Bethlehem!’     Luke 2:10 -11 TLB

IMG_7168

“Christmas offers its wonderful message. Emmanuel. God with us.

He who resided in heaven, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit,

willingly descended into our world. He breathed our air, felt our pain,

knew our sorrows, and died for or sins.

He didn’t come to frighten us,

but to show us the way to warmth and safety.”

-Max Lucado

“This will be a sign to you:

You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2:12

IMG_7256

More and more I’m freshening things up with creamy farmhouse whites and couldn’t resist this darling Creamery sign! I recently found it on Etsy. It has such a sweet old fashioned look to it! A creamery is where all things containing cream are made, like butter and ice cream! The two yummiest things on the planet! So I gathered my creamy white farmhouse pitchers and platters, wooden ice cream churn, and a cow creamer. To give it a Christmas touch I added some red and white candy canes and woodsy greens!

IMG_7251

I added more woodsey greens and buffalo plaid to my kitchen!

new too

Someone said “The kitchen is the heart of the home”…I agree! Especially at Christmastime! It’s the place where all the warm aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, apple pie, spicy clove and orange pomanders, and sugar cookies swirl throughout the house making each heart swoon and eyes sparkle. It smells like love. The kitchen seems to be the happiest room in the house.

If you look at the side of my baking center you will see my favorite Susan Branch Calendar hanging! It’s my favorite and it always get hung here in the kitchen!

susan branch calendar

I just got my 2019 one in and it is ADORABLE as always! Every season her charming, old fashioned illustrations warm my heart!! There are even recipes! You can find it here!

IMG_7257

I love the word Merry! To be Merry is to be jolly… cheerful… light-hearted…carefree…joyful… joyous… festive …happy… gleeful!  Proverbs 17:22 says  “A merry heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.”   That’s one of the reasons I love to decorate for Christmas (and  all the seasons for that matter)…it creates a merry…joyful….and festive atmosphere….and that kind of atmosphere is good for us!

IMG_7274

If you know me at all you know that I love decorating with vintage down in the farm  kinds of things. Take a look at this old screen! Someone painted a snowy christmas tree on it. And how adorable is this Fannie Farmer candy box? I wonder is a handsome Beau gave it to his sweet Sugar Pie! Heehee! There’s something about the things of yesteryear that are so comforting and endearing.  IMG_7296

I decided that this dear old cupboard needed to be painted white! Oh how I love it even more now! Looks like a bride all dressed in white! Lol!

IMG_7178

This is in our mudroom and I took a cue from the theme of the sign! All things dairy! A cute cow, farm truck, and little milk bottles too! I can certainly keep this up all year when I take the Christmas trees down.

IMG_7262

“The tree is full of trimmings
And gifts for girl and boy:
The world is full of Christmas Cheer,
Our hearts are full of joy.

IMG_7268

“The cheery warmth of the blazing fireplace sets the tone, and the evergreen smell of the decorated Christmas tree fills the air along with the music. We can almost hear the angels singing!” ~ Emilie BarnesIMG_7183

One of the things my grandkids love when they come over is our player piano! They will have lots of memories singing around this old beauty!

IMG_2178

This was taken a few years ago…sweet baby boys!

IMG_7292

Well darlin’, lastly I’d like to leave you with this thought…the best thing to decorate your home with is love! With love as your centerpiece, your home will sparkle with joy!
