Hey Sugar Pie! I’m back again with more of my summer decorating, but this time it’s a VIDEO TOUR!!!
Here is the link to my YouTube video of my Good Ol’ Summertime Decorating…Sugar Pie Farmhouse Style! After you watch it come back here ‘cuz I’ve got some more stuff to chat about!
Well, here in the Ozarks we’ve had a good amount of summer storms! Living up on a ridge we have a panoramic view of the billowy, gray clouds that roll in. We also get front row seats of the lightning as it flashes across the sky. It’s absolutely stunning but when the thunder and lightning bolts close to the house…eeeek! We’ve had the power to our well knocked out twice this season, which means no water…at all. For that reason I keep four one gallon containers on hand so we can at least brush our teeth, wash our face and have some to drink. Fortunately, our well guy “Lefty” comes out within a few hours to fix it. It sure gives me a secure feeling though to have some things stocked up in case of an emergency. I almost think it would be a good idea to have a manually operated water pump. I’ll have to talk to the Mr. about that. I’m curious, are any of y’all preppers, even in a small way? Would love to hear your thoughts on stocking up things for emergencies.
In other news, I was at Hobby Lobby and saw that they already have their fall and Christmas merchandise out. Even Cracker Barrel Restaurant has their fall display up. Now I know that it bothers a lot of gals to see seasonal things up so early, but I really don’t mind, mainly because I love those seasons to the moon and back. But I’m certainly not ready to say goodbye to summer yet ( I waited the whole winter long for it for crying out loud! Lol). Since it’s been so hot outside during the day I’ve actually been doing a ton of decluttering in my house. I’ve made about four trips to our local thrift store to donate several boxes and bags of stuff. It feels so good to simplify and freshen up the rooms in my home. And I’m thankful that the things I’m donating are going to bless someone else. But seeing the autumn decorations out in the stores got me thinking… you know, this really is a good time to clear the clutter before the hustle and bustle of fall and Christmas get here…and it’s just around the corner! Just sayin’! Lol!
Wouldn’t it be great to get a head start… to have our homes clean and tidy and clutter free by the time we’re ready to bring out our pumpkins and fall leaves? Well, I think so. I know for myself that I don’t like the feeling of being behind on things. I want to be prepared and organized. Not that I always am…quite the opposite! I have so many things on my plate that it’s easy for me to get behind on stuff, then I feel rushed and anxious. When that happens I feel like I’m missing out on living in the moment and fully experiencing the joy because I wasn’t quite ready for it. I hope that makes sense. That’s the drawback of being a perfectionist I guess! Lol! That’s why I like having a head start if I can! Yup, I’m a big fan of planning ahead.
Here’s the great news Sugar! We have plenty of time right now to tidy up our homes because, as I’m writing this, we have 7 weeks until September. Now I’m not saying to spend the rest of the summer cleaning! Goodness no! Especially if you have little ones at home, your time is going to be limited, plus you should be enjoying this season to the fullest. But maybe, just choose an area that could use some attention and do a little at a time. If you take the time now to begin preparing and planning for the upcoming season and the memories you hope to create it will be like planting happy-home seeds that will bring you a harvest of bountiful joy!
I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Now this may sound ridiculous to you but I’ll put Christmas music on when I have a big cleaning job to do. Yes even in the summertime. I know. I know. You’re probably rolling your eyes. Lol! But that’s ok, it works for me! Somehow it gets me in the mood and makes me feel happy! That just happens to be my cup of tea! Life is short and many times hard so anytime we can add some whimsy and delight into our lives why not? ( The soundtrack to Little Women and Pride and Prejudice works too!!)
“The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.”~Buddy the Elf
Well, I do want you to enjoy this wonderful summertime! Go get an ice cream cone, run through the sprinklers with the kids, go for a walk at sunset, sit on the front porch and enjoy the aroma of fresh cut grass, eat a sun-warmed tomato from the garden, enjoy a trip to the farmer’s market…and make happy memories! Keep your home bright in your heart. By that I mean to always be thinking (and thinking ahead) of things you can do to create a place your family feels loved in. Not just the decorations but the feeling of love, warmth, belonging, comfort and cozyness. Everything you do and say is like a seed that you plant and will eventually harvest.
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
So go plant some happy home seeds!

As usual the recent updates are just full of fabulousness
I was so thrilled to see you had shared a new post…thanks for all the inspiration! I appreciate your ideas of how to keep home and family first and encouraging us to enjoy every moment…thanks!
This was just what I needed today. Thank you for always providing encouraging words and inspiring ideas. For all you do, thank you!
I just love your content! I love the farmhouse decor! We go to estate sales and auctions here in the north east all the time and Im always inspired by what I purchase through your stuff! I ESPECIALLY LOVE your videos!!!
We are a contracting family which can lead to mountain and valley times on pay checks The stored food comes in handy! Now with 19 grands around I need abundant food all the time
But why store in ugly? I have gingham tied to handles of buckets. All glass pickle jars with cute lids. Shelves decorated or painted. I buy at garage sales and estate sales all vintage cuteness from women of kitchens long ago. If a true grid down ever happens, at least I will smile when I open my pantryI’ve been called a prepper…I call my self a woman of God…scrimping, making, harvesting for my loved ones.
Oh my gosh, I truly believe we were separated at birth, LOL. I thought I was the only one in the world wanting to play Christmas music in July!!! Literally, the way my mind works, it’s like a free pass straight to fall once the fireworks end on the 4th of July! Your home and your heart are beautiful. Thank you for being such an inspiration to so many :) Blessings :)
Hi! I know not everyone likes to share what they purge, but I would love to see videos of what you do and how you organize. You are such a good decorator, that I know you must have good ideas to store things and organize.
Debbie
I just love the simple look of your Christmas table with the red bowl and the small Christmas tree in the enamel pan. May I ask where you found your red bowl. Thanks so much I enjoy your blog!!
love all your posts..God bless
Hi, aunt ruthie, I love reading your post. I too play Christmas music, when I clean, or craft. It’s happy, a lot of people think it’s too soon, to even mention Christmas , it’s never too soon for me, I was getting excited just reading your letter. I too love to declutter, I donated boxes and boxes to Vietnam vets. My house is so declutted now, I feel light as a feather. I love to decorate every room in my house. So, soon I will be making a list of what decorations go where. To me it’s the most wonderful time of year. It’s so festive, I will have to check out hobby lobby soon. Thank you for your cheerful post, and your wonderful decorating tips, I don’t know how I started getting mail from you, but I’m glad I do. You have a great day .
I’m going through chemo this summer, and I don’t have much energy. I should finish mid-September. I’m really looking forward to fall this year even though it will mean surgery and radiation therapy. Still, Fall is the very best time of year to me. I hope we get it this year. I live over in Carthage, by Joplin, and we didn’t have our leaves turn until late November last year! It was awful! We had leaves on the trees during Christmas. Just wrong. Hoping for a good Fall and Christmas season this year even if I cannot do all the things I’d like to make our home like I’d like it to be.
Thank you for the inspiration.

Yay, two posts this month! It’s like the good ol’ days! I wish I was prepared in the slightest for disasters etc. but I am not. I always think of great ideas to get prepared but I never follow through. Procrastination is my worst habit… I play Disney music to get me going. Everyone thinks I’m nuts but I don’t care, I love it!… I love the holiday season, it’s my favorite time of year. So I don’t mind the early displays when I go to the store. It motivates me and helps me to make all my holiday plans for my family and I… Thank you for being such a blessing in my life Aunt Ruthie, I just love ya! I cannot wait to hear from you again… I was wondering, for your ebooks, they seem to go along with the seasons. Do you think that you’d ever do Spring and Winter themed ones to compliment your Autumn and Summertime themed books? I sure hope so. <3
You are the Best! I love reading your blog❤️ What a blessing you are❤️
I love Christmas music to work to also! Love your blog and website! Thanks for the reminder to plan ahead!
Hi :) I too listen to Christmas music any time of the year! Autumn and winter are my favorite seasons.
I am in the middle of a very long purge! September 2018 I am moving my family out of state. We live in Western Washington State and it has just become too expensive for me to live here. (Single mom of 6 kids on a very small income) I’m hoping to move East and/or South. If anyone has any recommendations on a nice, affordable, small town I’m all ears! (North/South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Virginia, Vermont, Etc.)
I am trying to get rid of as much stuff as I can before we have to move. Moving a family of 7 by yourself is not fun!
Loved your post!! I also listen to Christmas music or either the Little Women or Pride and Prejudice soundtrack when I’m tackling a big cleaning or declutter job. (Sometimes, I will even listen to Christmas music while I’m balancing my checkbook…to add a little cheer to the chore.) I love the idea of planning ahead and starting my declutter in preparation for fall and winter. I’m not a prepper but I like to be prepared…saving bottled water is so important if you have a well. One thing I do is freeze a bottle of water in a juice jug and leave it down in the bottom of my deep freeze. That way if I lose power it will help keep my freezer colder until my power can get restored. Also, once our house was hit by a tornado and we had several bottles of water that we had to use to flush toilets, drink and wash with while we were cleaning up our stuff and packing up our belongings. I like to keep extra candles for light if we lose power and I have a battery operated carbon monoxide detector to use if we lose power and have to use our gas fireplace. Anyway…thanks for the post and all of the fun tips/ideas. I hope you have a wonderful summer!
I just celebrated 3 weeks of this wondrous summer with family & friends. I would like to think that I started preparing my home & menus back in the cold winter months. But like so many of us perfectionist we still feel like we overlooked something important. In my case I under estimated the amount of eggs & milk that I would need for five grown grandchildren. Boy, can they put away the food. I love it. I cook every meal; no eating out for my gang when they are visiting Nanny. Every day I would try to fix one family members favorite. It sure varied. In the mist of all the festivities we dropoed everything and went to the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX for a secluded trip so that my husband could have a planned Ablation on his heart. The doctor said we could come back to the lake but with ridged instructions. Like no jumping off the Cliffs!. The first night home we were greeted by two grandchildren and two friends. Had to make sure Poppy was ok! We visited, laughed, reminiscing the pass and hopefully made new memories for the future. And of course we ATE. I gave my 20 year old granddaughter and her college room mate some easy dorm room menu meals. They were anxious to try them when school starts back up. Proud of those girls. Now if they would only learn to make their bed!
After all is said & done it has so far been a great summer. It’s not over yet but I’m already planning on fall.
Thanks for your blog. You really inspire ne to try harder and also take the time to smell the coffee and relax and not sweat the small things. God, family & friends come first. My home will take care if it’s self if there is love in your heart. My heart overflows!!!!
Just stumbled onto your blog via Pinterest today. It’s always wonderful to find a kindred spirit! Would write more, but I have to run to Hobby Lobby now to look at the fall decor!
Awesome post! Your homes is always so warming! I am finishing my canning and preserving season, and plan to start my cleaning for fall and Christmas, you are so right, we need to plan ahead!
We had a hand pump installed due to power loss during storms too, I absolutely love to drink fresh water from this well!
Thanks for sharing, I also enjoyed the you-tube video, just keep them coming! ~smile~
