“Thoughts go to your heart and form your beliefs, your beliefs control your thoughts and actions.”
~Gary Smalley (Awesome Speaker and Author on Marriage and Family)
Gals, we have got to be careful with what we allow ourselves to think about! If we are constantly angry, discontented, or depressed, it will show up on our face, and unfavorable words will spill out of our mouth. Oh dear! Our negative emotions have a huge impact on us and those around us. It changes our heart and the way we see the world. Negative thinking can change our destiny.
- As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man”. Proverbs 27:19
-
“For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34
We become like the people we hang around with.
What would you rather be….sweet-as-a-cupcake or icky like sour-milk? I pick the cupcake! Warm-hearted, gracious, and joyful women leave a sparkling trail of delight wherever they go. They are the gals who make everyone they meet feel special and valued. They are the ladies whose honorable influence makes a difference in the lives of others. She is beautifully irresistible. Everyone wants to know her secret. (Hey, where do I sign up? I want to join the Sweet-as-a- Cupcake-Club! )
Miss Cupcake’s secret? If you read God’s promises, spend time praising Him and count your blessings everyday, your joy will start showing!
“You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy, at your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11
“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless and affectionately praise His name!” Psalm 100:4
One thing I’ve decided to do this year is to be more aware of God’s goodness and to develop a more grateful spirit. So I’ve put together a Thankful notebook. It’s not a new idea of course, but it’s new for me. In the last couple of months it has gloriously enriched my life and blessed me with fresh joy! Instead of looking at what is wrong, I intentionally look for what is right! And then I thank the good Lord above!
I bought a composition book at Wallmart and covered it with scrapbooking paper (inside the cover too) added a Target Cupcake sticker, polka-dot ribbon, and titled it Sugar Sprinkles From Heaven.
My Sub-Title: Looking for God’s sweet goodness. Everyday. On purpose.
He is whispering, I love you with a wink and a smile.
Italian cookies made by my mom (Esther)
and my Aunt Lucy, just like Grandma used to make.
Everyday God sprinkles His sweet goodness down from Heaven to us. It may come in the form of a breathtaking sunrise, or a phone call from a dearly missed loved one, or the discovery of a fabulous new book or lost keys found. These things are not happenstance. He knows what delights our heart and so He sends them on purpose, with a wink and a smile, as He whispers “My child, I love and adore you!”
This notebook is for me to record those sugar sprinkles from heaven, so I don’t miss out on the joy He sends me in the rush of life. So I may develop a blissfully thankful and contented heart. A heart that will delight in sharing the sweetness of the Lord Jesus with everyone I meet.
Some pages have scriptures, quotes and pictures…..
Other pages have handwritten thoughts and words of thanksgiving. I always add the date, and place. It sits next to my bed for when I have time to jot a few things in it. It has caused me to be on the look-out for those heaven-sent gifts of love that God sends me. His fingerprints are everywhere, we just need to open our pretty-long-lashed eyes to see them! It’s amazing how it has changed my perspective on life!
Poor Nellie, she had a “poor little-O’ me” attitude whenever things didn’t work out the way she wanted. I guess she didn’t learn the concept If you complain, you remain. Maybe she didn’t hear the story about the Israelites in Numbers 14, and how they grumbled , complained, wailed and whined to Moses and Aaron. They did not like their circumstance and were not willing to wait for God’s timing. They ignored miracle after miracle that God performed to show them He was taking care of them, providing food and protection as He lead them out of slavery. He had a glorious plan for their destiny. But because of their ungratefulness and lack of trust, they wandered in the desert for 40 years. A journey that should have only taken them 11 days! They missed the Promised-Land blessing. Oh, that is just plain pitiful I tell you!
Whenever I hear the story of the whiny Israelites I’ve been tempted to think; Oh for crying out loud, what was their problem! God parted the Red Sea and fed them Manna….gave them a cloud to follow during the day and a pillar of fire by night….all of their needs were met and they were free from slavery!! They needed to just snap out of their bad attitudes! But then….. I remember….. that I too, like the Israelites, and like Nellie pictured above, have been known to complain a time or two! (actually….way more than just a time or two!) Someone needs to tell Nellie about the promises of the Lord, where she will find joy unspeakable and full of glory! Amen sister!
Bessie Mae, on the other hand has learned to serve the Lord with Gladness (Psalm 100:2). Whenever she starts to get overwhelmed with all that she is depended on to do, why, she pulls herself up by her boot straps, cancels the Pity-Party, asks the Lord for strength, and don’t you just know, He gives her a sweet song in her heart! Yes ma’am, she has become a thankful, toe-tappin‘, sweet, hymn-singin‘ gal!
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.

Practice being the woman you want to be.
Hmmmm….sweet-as-a-cupcake….or…sour-milk?
Maggie is also a member of the Sweet-As-A-Cupcake Club. She has decided not to let circumstances or people rule her attitude. She’s made up her mind to put a cherry on top of each day, by honoring God in all she does….her thoughts…her actions…. and in her conversations. Every time she powders her nose and applies her Raspberry Sizzle lipstick, she knows her best cosmetic is to wear a radiant smile and speak words of kindness and thankfulness. She is on her way to enjoying her destiny as God leads her to the Promised-land, flowing with sweet milk and honey!
Gals, lets not miss out on our Promised-land destiny! We need to remember that blessings follow obedience. When we obey God’s Word (The Bible) as we enter His gates with thanksgiving, God will send showers of blessings!
Now, of course, we will have those “help me Jesus” days when we want to pull our hair out, or scream or both, but just take a deep breath, ask for God’s grace, sit down with a glass of ice water and gain your composure. Tell yourself this too shall pass. Forgive or ask for forgiveness and carry on. The great news is, God’s mercies are new every morning! So each day we have a fresh start! Keep sweet!
Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Phillippians 4:8
Living our life with the spirit of thankfulness…..
….think of the impact on our children!
Who wouldn’t want a mama that’s as sweet as a cupcake?
Like mama like child…let’s raise thankful kids!

Ruthann-
My Italian grandma used to make those cookies, too! She always called them “Mary Garbulio Cookies” so we grew up calling them that also. We all assumed that in the “cookie cookbook” that was there true name (like “sugar cookie” or “brownie”). We met Mary Garbulio one day and were astonished to learn that that was NOT there proper name. (I don’t recall what they’re really called). Mary was quite embarrassed at all of us GUSHING over her like she was Elvis.
Did your grandma used to keep cookies under her bed like mine? Mine kept cookies in store boxes under her bed so when we asked for cookies, she always said “go under my bed and get some.”
Such a shock when we grew up and realized not all grandmas name their cookies and store them under their bed!
Oops. It’s late.
“there” should be “their”
Ye gads!
Miss Ruthann,
Very well said…..some days I don’t want to be around me….we do have so much to be thankful for and how much we are blessed…
I hereby induct you into the ‘Southern Belle Society’……Georgia is about as southern as you can get…so you are a Southern Bell Sista……Betty
What a great post!!! I struggle daily to be ‘sweet as a cupcake’!! I too often look at the bad side of things. I think I will start a journal as well!! I LOVE how you decorated it!! To cute!!

What an inspiration…I needed your post so much today. It’s as though a message from heaven has been sent to me.
I’m facing some surgery Monday. At my pre-op, my BP was too high. My doctor gave me some meds to bring it down. I go back today to have it checked again. I’ve mentally prepared myself for this surgery and don’t want to “not have it” My family and friends have all been encouraging me to “stay calm” and your post just further encourages that. Everything you wrote is so very very true.
When we put God first in our lives and others second…then everything else falls in place. Thanks for your wonderful words of encouragement…particularly today.
Always an enjoyable, instructive read, Ruthann! Now you should be writing a book!
Question: I visit daily. This post is dated Tuesday and I haven’t seen it until today, Friday. Wonder what the delay is…
Your entry was so encouraging to read, especially now as I sit with loads of laundry to do and a fussy, grumpy little one.
Our God is good and faithful in all things and, you’re so right, He will give us the strength we need, not only to accomplish our seemingly mundane tasks, but to do them with joyful, thankful hearts!!
My dirty laundry means that I have a sweet family who has worn them. Thank you God! We have the great outdoors, into which I can take my grumpy child and allow him to run and play! Thank you Lord!!!
Your post has help me regain focus and perspective for the day!!! Thank you, Ruthann!
Ohhhh, well that explains it! You must have saved it as a draft and the original date remained. Phew! It’s wonderful to be reassured that one isn’t crazy. LOL! Thanks!!
Oh… Ruthann you have done it again… Touched my heart & soul exactly where I needed guidance from. You are SUCH a Blessing to ALL of us out here in blogland. Thank you for being here, I run over every so often to see what kind of a blessing I will get from you today. Take care & many blessings 2 you, Pamela
Great post Ruthann…something to always remember…keep joy in our hearts AND minds!! As for Gary Smalley…aren’t his writings and lessons wonderful…great stuff!
Loved all your sweet pictures, too…Hey, and I’ve been to a couple of those pity parties myself…a time or two…luckily I am learning!
Thanks for the daily inspirations…your book is just wonderful…not only the concept and what you have added…but the design is so precious and VERY YOU!!
Blessings…
Teresa

Thanks for such an inspiring post!
I just found your blog. It is wonderful! So inspirational. Thank you for your post it was just what I needed, and thank you for the wonderful recipes. Your home is gorgeous! I am a Southern gal living in Alabama. (Another tornado alley)

What a breath of fresh air to sit down and read this at the end of my day.
God surely is smiling down upon your wisdom, and your desire to share what He has revealed to you!!
Thank you, many times over! My weekend will be different because I read this post.
I too have what I call my prayer journal, a book of thanks. You are correct, it is all Attitude in how we live. It is a choice we make. Either the cup is half emply or half full, I prefer to be half full, but in fact, my cup runneth over. I am blessed through HIM! Good post!
AMEN SISTA! Thanks for a great blog! And when we stay in that attitude of gratitude then everything else seems to fall into place! Then step out in faith and start thanking Him for things you don’t have yet but have prayed for and watch what happens!
Blessings and Hugs!
Patti

What a wonderful post, Ruthann, and a good reminder!!
Your idea to use the journal is a good one, and the journal that you made is adorable, and just invites one to open it up and start writing about the blessings that surround us.
Thank you for starting off my day with a smile.
Blessings,
Pam
Hi, Ruthann.
I wrote about you in one of my blog entries. Would you mind if I posted a picture of your Auntie Em’s Blackberry Sugar Pie with my entry?
Thank you, it was good to be reminded of God’s faithfulness…
Thank you, Ruthann – I have been blessed today – with a ‘wink and a smile’ straight from Heaven! Thank you for reminding us how gifted we are.

Hello Ruthann!
Amen sister!! I wake up every morning with a thankful heart. I so want to be sweet as a cupcake and so NOT sour. I thank our Heavenly Father for every blessing that he showers down on us. I love him with all of my heart, he is our redeemer. You are such a joy to visit!! I love stopping by…..thank you Ruthann have a blessed day! Love, Nicole TX
Thanks so much for this. It has been a trying day for me with a very fussy 2 year old and a teething 8 month old. I praise God for the word He gave you to share with all of us. I just need to praise Him for the fact that I have my sweet babies. That they are healthy and right here with me. That I have a sweet husband who helps me with them even when he comes home from a long day at work. I have really been working on my “thankfulness” and “contentment”. Some days seem overwhelming, but in reality, I just need to CHILL OUT! I need nothing more. Just more of Jesus!!!!
Thank you Ruthann for the reminder that God is always looking out for us and to be thankful :)

Thank you for your beautiful post. I absolutely love your notebook. I think we all need to have a thankful notebook :)
I just love your blog, so inspiring :)
A very encouraging (and convicting!) post. I needed to hear this exhortation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. May God continue to bless you with wisdom and grace and use your blog to encourage and build others up.
I just want to tell you how amazing your life can change with an attitude of gratitude! It is amazing how everything is better when faced with a smile! Very good and insightful!
Hello. This post is likeable, and your blog is very interesting, congratulations :-). I will add in my blogroll =). If possible gives a last there on my blog, it is about the Plotter, I hope you enjoy. The address is http://plotter-brasil.blogspot.com. A hug.
I really love the Sweep Spirit here at your blog.
I so want to be a member of the Sweet-as-a-Cupcake-Club. I think I will make a little “club Member card” to keep by the kitchen sink as a reminder to (as I often tell my children) “Be Sweet Now, ya hear?”
Those cookies look so yummy. My grandma nor my mother made cookies (they were too busy)…but I do! I believe it is never too late to make changes in family traditions, especially those that need fixing. My wee grandson is only 13 months old but he already knows Grandma = Cookie. :o)
Lovingly, Paula
Hi I just love reading your blog and all the scripture! What a blessings! Denise
Hi Ruthann
I love all your sweet messages. You have a servants heart and it shows by all the things you write about. Thank you for reminding us all that we need to be thankful for what we have and utilize all our god given talents. Love, Kathy
You, my sweet cup cake gal, have inspired me to start a blessing journal just as you have. I have bought stuff to make one and never got it started. (I got the stuff earlier this past week actually) So, I got the “push” I need to get after it! *smiles* Your posts are such a blessing. I’m still just slowly but surely as time allows during the day or after my children are in bed reading your beautiful, gracious, SOUTHERN BELLE of a blog ;) xoxox Cass
Dear Heavenly sister Ruthann Aunt (hehe..),
This post is anointed by holy power. All your godly posts are inspiring. I am moved to make a comment again, haha. :D
Even for a spiritual and optimistic girl as myself, I faced discouraging moments, thank you for quoting the Bible scriptures, the Bible verses are powerful swords that zapped out the cloudy bad spiritual attacks. I remember again the blessing and sunshiny praying girl of light that I am.
We have all been blessed. People like you & others carry on spreading/ sharing the God’s blessings, this is heroic! Haha!
I also enjoy the vintage country-ey pictures you put up. ;-)
